(WJE) ABSTRACT Cladding the Mid-Century Modern: Thin Stone Veneer-Faced Precast Concrete Sarah Sojung Yoon Dr. Theodore Prudon, Advisor With significant advancements in building technology at the turn of the twentieth century, new building materials and innovative systems changed the conventions of construction and design. New materials were introduced and old materials continued to be transformed for new uses. With growing demand after WWII forcing further modernization and standardization and greater experimentation; adequate research and testing was not always pursued. Focusing on this specific composite cladding material consisting of thin stone veneer-faced precast concrete – the official name given at the time – this research aims to identify what drove the design and how did the initial design change over time. Design decisions and changes are evident from and identified by closely studying the industry and trade literature in the form of articles, handbooks/manuals, and guide specifications. For this cladding material, there are two major industries that came together: the precast concrete industry and the stone industry. Literature from both industries provide a comprehensive understanding of their exchange and collaboration. From the information in the trade literature, case studies using early forms of thin stone veneer-faced precast concrete are identified, and the performance of the material over time is discussed. -

Decreasing hydrothermalism at Pamukkale- Hierapolis (Anatolia) since the 7th century Bassam Ghaleb1, Claude Hillaire-Marcel1, Mehmet Ozkul2, and Feride Kulali3 1Université du Québec à Montréal, GEOTOP, Montreal, Canada ([email protected]) 2Pamukkale University, Denizli, Turkey 3Uskudar University, Istanbul,Turkey The dating of travertine deposition and groundwater / hydrothermal seepages in relation to late Holocene climatic changes can be achieved using short-lived isotopes of the 238U decay series, as illustrated by the present study of the Pamukkale travertine system, at the northern edge of the Denizli and Baklan graben merging area (see Özkul et al., 2013; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.sedgeo.2013.05.018. The strongly lithified self-built channels and modern pools where analysed for their 238U,234U,230Th, 226Ra, 210Pb and 210Po contents, whereas 238U,234U and 226Ra were measured in modern hydrothermal waters. When corrected for detrital contamination, 230Th-ages of travertine samples range from 1215±80 years, in the oldest self-built hydrothermal channels, to the Present (modern pool carbonate deposits) thus pointing to the inception of the existing huge travertine depositional systems during the very late Holocene, probably following the major Laodikeia earthquate of the early 7th century (cf. Kumsar et al., 2016; DOI 10.1007/s10064-015-0791-0). So far, the available data suggest three major growth phases of the travertine system: an early phase (7th to 8th centuries CE), an intermediate phase (~ 14th century CE) and a modern one, less than one century old. -

For that reason, no clear knowledge exists about its actual range size and habitat preferences. We here applied a molecular taxonomic and phylogeographical approach based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA to shed light on its distribution and to infer its demographic history. Furthermore, we analysed aquifer types and water flow regimes to provide a clearer picture of the species’ ecological requirements. Our results indicate that N. puteanus is widely distributed north of the Alps, having its core range in the geomorphological natural region of the ‘South German Scarplands’ (SGS). Additionally, isolated satellite populations exist in the Taunus and the Sauerland, and two single individuals were collected in Luxembourg and in Austria, respectively. The species’ maximal distribution range reaches 756 km between the two single-specimen records and 371 km within the SGS. A very high haplotype diversity was observed, revealing the presence of seven haplotype groups. -

Too often when genealogical texts are written on German research, the tendency has been to generalize. Because of the historical, political, and environmental background of this country, that is one thing that should not be done. In Germany the records vary as far as types, time period, contents, and use from one kingdom to the next and even between areas within the same kingdom. In addition to the variation in record types there are also research problems concerning the use of different calendars and naming practices that also vary from area to area. Before one can successfully begin doing research in Germany there are certain things that he must know. There are certain references, problems and procedures that will affect how one does research regardless of the area in Germany where he intends to do research. The purpose of this book is to set forth those things that a person must know and do to succeed in his Germanic research, whether he is just beginning or whether he is advanced. -

Biographical Note Possibly a group of three brothers—G. Leiber, V. Erich Leiber, and R. Leiber— participated in the German youth movement during the 1920s and 1930s. The probable maker of the photo album, Erich Leiber, was probably born before 1915 in north- western Germany, most likely in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. His early experiences with the youth movement appear to have been in conjunction with school outings and Christian Union for Young Men (CVJM) in Austria. He also travelled to Sweden in 1928, but most of his travels are concentrated in northwestern Germany. Later in 1931 he became an active member in a conservative organization, possibly the Deutsche Pfadfinderschaft St. Georg,1 participating in outings to nationalistic locations such as the Hermann Monument in the Teutoburg Forest and to the Naval Academy at Mürwik in Kiel. In 1933 Erich Leiber joined the SA and became a youth leader or liaison for a Hitler Youth unit while still maintaining a connection to a group called Team Yorck, a probable extension of prior youth movement associates. After 1935 Erich’s travels seem reduced to a small group of male friends, ending with an Easter trip along the Rhine River in 1938. -

The Weather in Germany in Spring 2021
Press Release The weather in Germany – Spring 2021 Coldest spring since 2013 – but average sunshine Offenbach, 31 May 2021 – Spring 2021 was much too cool. Thus, the series of excessively warm springs in Germany, which had started in 2013, came to an end. The cool north winds in April and the inflow of fresh maritime air in May, in particular, kept average temperatures low. Summery weather only made a brief appearance. Whereas the amount of precipitation was less than the long-term average, the sunshine duration was slightly higher than normal. This is the summary announced by the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) after an initial analysis of the observations from its approximately 2,000 measuring stations. A mild March was followed by a very cool April and May At 7.2 degrees Celsius (°C), the average temperature in spring 2021 was 0.5 degrees lower than the international reference value 1961–1990. Compared to the current 1991–2020 reference period, the deviation was -1.7 degrees. The factors that determined the negative deviation were the coldest April for 40 years and the cool May. Before this, March had brought fluctuating temperatures. Germany only enjoyed a brief high summer intermezzo for Mother's Day on 9 May. During this time, Waghäusel-Kirrlach, to the south-west of Heidelberg, registered the first hot day of 2021 (> 30 °C) with a temperature of 31.3 °C, which was also the hottest spring temperature nationwide. The lowest temperature was recorded on 6 April at Messstetten on the Swabian Alb (-13.6 °C). Little precipitation in the north-east in contrast to plenty of precipitation in the south per square metre (l/m²): at around 175 l/m2, it was only 93 per cent of the long-term average. -
