The Future Needs the Past
The Future needs the Past: Problems and Challenges of Post-Cataclysm Heritage Management in Kotagede, Jogjakarta Special Province, Indonesia The Future needs the Past: Problems and Challenges of Post-Cataclysm Heritage Management in Kotagede, Jogjakarta Special Province, Indonesia Dr.-Ing. Ir. Widjaja Martokusumo Associate Professor, Architectural Design Research Group School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development ITB Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT n addition to traditional causes of decay, cultural heritage is increasingly threatened by natural I disasters. Earthquakes interrupt the historical continuity of place making and create an opportunity to both reconstruct historical fabrics and to create new meanings and functions. As demonstrated in Kotagede, Jogjakarta Special Province, Indonesia, sustainable conservation should evolve with new contemporary needs and not be about making static museum places. Two case studies of post-calamity reconstruction illustrate the utilization of existing urban fabric, in which through redefi nition and reprogramming do not reveal solutions, but demonstrate the challenges in response to the urban dynamics after the 2006 earthquake. -

In recent year, Yogyakarta has been very popular to domestic and international tourists in that many heritage places in the city have been developed to distinctive tourist destinations, yet no reasonable criteria has been developed to guide its development. This study assumed that places with distinctive identity or character or uniqueness are the most interested object of attraction for tourists. Therefore, the study will explore the sense of place as the important success factor in sustaining a heritage place as tourist attraction and identify aspects of a place that might contribute to its sustainability. Two heritage districts: Kotagede and Kotabaru are selected for evaluating aspects of place that are significantly contributing to the historical and cultural image of the city of Yogyakarta. The study identify and analyze the existing condition of physical attributes, performed activities and conception of the place. Indicators being used are developed from the current research undertaken by geographer and environmental psychologist. The study resulted to the conclusion that an interconnection of many aspects rather than identity of the place is the critical factor for the sustainability of a heritage place. -

Revisiting Architectural Structuralism: Archi-Cultural Pattern As a Method to Read the Meaning of Tamkesi Vernacular Architecture
Revisiting Architectural Structuralism: Archi-Cultural Pattern as a Method to Read the Meaning of Tamkesi Vernacular Architecture Reginaldo Christophori Lake1*, Antariksa2, Purnama Salura3 1Architecture Postgraduate Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Katolik Widya Mandira, Indonesia 2 Architecture Postgraduate Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia 3 Architecture Postgraduate Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Katolik Parahyangan, Indonesia * [email protected] The widespread tendency to combine vernacular with modern architecture has led to the need for an in-depth understanding of the concepts that underlie the form of vernacular architecture. Unfortunately, there has been no systematic and rigorous research method aimed explicitly at reading the architecture of vernacular settlements that do not have written data on local traditions and culture. This study puts forward the theoretical-methodological steps to read the meaning of architectural patterns in the context of vernacular settlements by elaborating Levi-Strauss' structural analysis of myths with Salura and Alexander architectural theory. This study resulted in structuralist-inductivist steps to describe, analyse, and interpret vernacular architecture. The methodological framework consists as three significant parts: Firstly, to describe the activity and form of vernacular architecture in-depth based on the anatomical scope and architectural composition-properties. Secondly, to explore the surface structure of local myths, -
