Sviatoslav Dmitriev The Theoric Fund, the Athenian fi nance in the 330s, and Apollodorus Abstract This article examines the history and role of the Theoric Fund in Athens, focusing on evidence and arguments in the long-running debate about whether a legal prohibition existed against channeling the surplus budget money designated for the Theoric Fund to military purposes. The argument here is that Libanius’ reference to this prohibition as being enforced by the death penalty for at least some time in the 340s cannot simply be rejected by adducing the evidence about either the proposal to have a public vote on diverting this money for military purposes, as was moved by Apollodorus in the early 340s, or the way in which the Theoric Fund operated in the 330s and 320s. Quite a lot has been written about the Theoric Fund, whose main declared purpose was to distribute money for public entertainment to qualifi ed Athe- nians, primarily for two reasons: the contested dating of its establishment, and the uncertainty about whether there existed a prohibition on diverting its money for other purposes. The foundation of the Theoric Fund is variously attributed to Pericles, to Agyrrhius in the early fourth century, or, according to the ma- jority opinion, to Diophantus and Eubulus in the mid-350s.1 Pinpointing the exact date of its establishment might not be as important as some think, since it is likely that the Fund, and the very idea of fi nancing public entertainment, evolved over time, paralleling the progress of Athenian democracy, which is 1 Pericles: Schol. -

Physical intimacy and sexuality including coitus is an essential ingredient which is an integral part of matrimony and cements marital relationship. It is the elixir of life and an invigorating force that makes life worth living with enthusiasm and bonding. Generally, most of us take sexual relationship for granted by virtue of one‘s marriage to our spouse or due to natural intimacy that couples develop as a result of interpersonal interaction. However, nurturing of sexual intimacy is often not considered as a conscious effort, gradually paving the way for problems by influx of time, erosion of novelty, increasing responsibilities and various other factors. The word ―sex‖ and sexuality topics are a taboo and inhibiting in our society and culture, so much so that even healthy and normal discussion on it is considered to be indecent, restrictive and uncomfortable. The irrational beliefs and myths related to sexuality continues to be reinforced and go unchallenged, strengthening resistance and diffidence with respect to sex, even between couples, who are generally adults and in committed relationship or married. Sexual knowledge and information is generally informally acquired and not appropriately channelised in many cases, giving rise to misinformation, irrational beliefs and myths that not only are a cause of many medical and psychological concerns as well as legal issues but also causes irreparable damage to interpersonal relationships, erodes the charm of intimacy, married life and various relationships that are dependent on it or arising out of it. -

We situate the sale of sex toys in the context of in-home marketing to women, the explosion of a sex industry, and the emergence of lifestyle and body politics. We explore the significance of sex toys for women as marketed in female-only contexts, paying particular attention to the similarities and differences with Tupperware’s marketing of plastic that promises happiness to women. We argue that sex-toy sales follow the exact patterns of Tupperware sales but, since the artifacts sold are for the bedroom rather than the kitchen, foster an even greater sense of intimacy between the women— which has both positive and negative consequences for thinking critically about the commodification of sexuality, bodies, and lifestyles in our capitalist culture. Vibrators and other sex toys constitute the technological route to a self- reflexive body project of female orgasm. Lysistrata on the Arabic Stage
LYSISTRATA ON THE ARABIC STAGE Marina Kotzamani ristophanes’ Lysistrata is one of the world’s foremost anti-war plays. Written and produced during the Peloponnesian civil war between Athens and A Sparta the play expresses strong criticism of the war. Its basic premise is that all the women of Greece, under the leadership of Lysistrata, go on a sex strike so as to pressure the men to stop fighting. They also occupy the Acropolis, the symbol of Athenian democracy, transgressing on a traditionally male space to prevent men from getting money for the war. In Aristophanes’ comic utopia, sex and politics are inextricably bound: peace is identified with sex and war with the absence of it. The universal sex strike is successful, as men find it impossible to do without sex and the comedy has a happy, though ironic ending. Whatever the meaning of the play in antiquity, Lysistrata has strongly fascinated modern audiences and has been by far the most frequently performed Aristophanic comedy of the twentieth century in the West.1 Once again Lysistrata’s significance as a classic has been highlighted as an open-ended work that can be shaped to respond to cultural concerns across time and geography. As part of the Lysistrata Project over 1000 readings of Lysistrata were held worldwide on March 3, 2003, to protest the war of the U.S. against Iraq that was then imminent.2 This innovative project was initiated and organized by two New York-based actors, Kathryn Blume and Sharron Bower who, using the resources of the Internet were able to mobilize over 300,000 people and to set up readings in 59 countries in just over six weeks. -

Then in turn the Megarians, whom Dicaeopolis describes as 7t£<puoryyroJ.l£vol-inflamed like fighting cocks from eating too much garlic-came to Athens and stole two whores from the brothel of Aspasia. So although there had been tit for tat, it was the Athenians who started the war, and somehow it was a game of kottabos that provoked them to vent their animal instincts so fatefully.l Elsewhere Aristophanes treats this game as just one among the many lighthearted diversions that his characters typically en joy, and thus as quite lacking any menacing aspect. PREFACE by Huston Smith WHEN I WAS ABOUT TO PUBLISH Cleansing the Doors of Perception: The Religious Significance of Entheogenic Plants and Chemicals, there were those who advised me not to do so, saying that it would destroy my reputation. Time has proved them wrong. As the religious significance of these substances comes to be increasingly accepted—the glaring exception being the Food and Drug Administration—the sales of that book (favorably reviewed from the beginning) continue to rise. As does my conviction of the importance of the issue, and I will say why. The great achievement of the linguist Noam Chomsky, who was my colleague during the fifteen years I taught at MIT, was to discover the universal grammar that every spoken language–– English, Chinese, French, whatever––must conform to, for it seems to be imprinted into the human brain. I, for my part, have worked out the universal grammar of religion to which authentic religions conform. Reduced to a single sentence, that grammar concludes that Reality is Perfect, and that human beings should do their best to conform their lives to that perfection. Reality’s perfection seems to be contradicted by perception of the world, but this is not surprising, for Reality is Infinite and our minds are not. Out minds must expand if they are to receive even glimpses of the Infinite Perfection. Thus the question is: how can they do this? Perfect Reality has provided a way. Through the entheogens, to be sure, but here we come to a point that has been under-noticed in the discussion of this important subject. -

This project aims to perform an extensive study of the sixty-two fragmentary plays of Euripides in order to provide a picture of his presentation of gender that is as full as possible. Beginning with an overview of the history of the collection and transmission of the fragments and an introduction to the study of gender in tragedy and Euripides’ extant plays, this project takes up the contexts in which the fragments are found and the supplementary information on plot and character (known as testimonia) as a guide in its analysis of the fragments themselves. These contexts include the fifth- century CE anthology of Stobaeus, who preserved over one third of Euripides’ fragments, and other late antique sources such as Clement’s Miscellanies, Plutarch’s Moralia, and Athenaeus’ Deipnosophistae. The sections on testimonia investigate sources ranging from the mythographers Hyginus and Apollodorus to Apulian pottery to a group of papyrus hypotheses known as the “Tales from Euripides”, with a special focus on plot-type, especially the rape-and-recognition and Potiphar’s wife storylines. -
Aphrodite on a Ladder
APHRODITE ON A LADDER (PLATES 17-19) N JULY OF 1981, in Byzantinelevels above and west of what was soonto be identified as the Stoa Poikile, the excavatorsof the Athenian Agora found two joining fragmentsof a Classical votive relief (P1. 17:a).1 The relief is framed by simple moldings: taenia and ovolo at top and a plain band at the right side. In the pictorial field is preservedthe head of a young woman carved in low relief. She gazes down to the left at a vessel raised in her right hand. Her head is coveredby a short veil. Above and behind the veil are two rungs and the vertical supports of a ladder whose upper end disappearsbehind the frame. Although frag- mentary and weathered, the relief provides a precious document for the study of Classical relief sculpture, and its unusual iconographygives a valuable clue to the identity of one of the deities worshiped in the area. Most of the figure'sprofile is broken away, but the carefully carvedlines of the lips and eye show that the sculptor took pains to give her delicate features. Her hair, where it ap- pears below the veil, is mostly worn away. Along the side of her face appear waves of hair with a scallopedcontour. No trace of her ear is preserved.It was either very small or hidden beneath her hair. Folds of the veil cross her head in bifurcating linear patterns of rounded ridges. Below her hair two folds fall down along her neck, while others, from the hidden right side of her head, blow out behind in sweeping curves.
