Forehand, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate College ABSTRACT While fraternity and sorority life continues to make headlines and is called upon regularly to validate the purpose it holds to remain on college campuses today, many still believe that when fraternity and sorority are done right, it is one of the best opportunities on college campuses today outside of the classroom. Much of their success is due to the efforts and support of the fraternity and sorority life professionals. This dissertation will offer the first Scholarly Personal Narrative of a mid-level, seasoned, fraternity and sorority life professional working in higher education. Current research shows the average age of a fraternity and sorority life professional is twenty- seven and over half the professionals have been at their place of employment for two years or less. I will explore my own personal journey over the last twelve years with hopes of finding meaning in this uncommon career path and explore where resilience and passion resulted in professional longevity. Oh yes, and an amazing memory! Professor Robert Marshall, who upon realizing that my non-appearance at the Poetry class Final Exam was out of character for me, phoned his friend, the house mother at the Beta House to see if I was all right. One of the brothers woke me up and in record time I was in the classroom and allowed to finish the exam. He was a scholar, a caring man and a class act. Where I have traveled and places I would like to see Because of my second career as a Tour Operator and Director, I was able to travel to approximately 90 countries, visit all the states and provinces and to spend time living in Australia, South America and several European countries. Still on the list are China, Bangkok, Iceland and a return to Vietnam under somewhat different conditions. I've been fortunate enough to have had homes in over ten states and six foreign countries.

    1 20.01 Cultivating a More Inclusive Recruitment Experience and Addressing Implicit Bias FOSTERING A MORE INCLUSIVE RECRUITMENT EXPERIENCE Description We ask potential new members (PNMs) and those involved in recruitment to bring their authentic selves to the process in an effort to ensure they find the group within which they will feel a genuine sense of belonging. Yet, the process can often feel staged and curated in ways that leave our members and PNMs questioning how they should show up. Whether virtual or in-person, we must be mindful that genuine conversations and leaving behind the frills (matching attire, décor, ring lights, specified background items, etc.) allow Panhellenic chapters and PNMs to be in a space that accepts and values what they are bringing to the table. As College Panhellenic officers and recruitment counselors, our energies should be focused on inclusive language, the values of our Panhellenic sorority community and celebrating the sisters we have from all identities in an intentional way that supports them. Shared Language Diversity: The blending of different identities, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives within an organization/community, all of which impact the way a person is perceived and received by others, as well as how they perceive and receive the world around them. Equity: The fair treatment, access, opportunity and advancement for all people, while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups. Inclusion: Creating an environment of open participation from all individuals with different ideas and perspectives where everyone feels they have a voice, are valued and feel validated.

    Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 3, No. 2, June 2007 Sorority Rush as Lust Dean Scheibel and Megan Desmond A five-star girl,1 a major hottie named Dani Hunter,2 walks into a class I’m taking.3 She is tall and blond, with almond-shaped eyes, and 1 Campus sororities use numerical rating systems to rank-order and “score” prospective new members (aka “rushees”). One sorority uses the five points of a star to represent different qualities, including education and scholarship, personal development, activities and honors, character, and interests and talents. A “five- star” rushee embodies the qualities of an ideal member. The term “girl” is routinely used by current sorority members when referring to each other. See Barbara J. Risman, “College Women and Sororities: The Social Construction and Reaffirmation of Gender Roles,” Urban Life 11, 251. 2 The names of all individuals and sororities in this essay have been changed. 3 The author is using a particular “voice” to represent the narrator, who is a “sorority girl.” Realist depictions of cultural realms may be problematic to represent the world of the “other.” In particular, the use of the sorority voice allows me to express an excited and dramatic quality that is difficult within traditional scholarly writing.
