Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 Jonathan Wroot PhD Thesis Submitted to the University of East Anglia For the qualification of PhD in Film Studies 2013 1 Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 2 Acknowledgements Thanks needed to be expressed to a number of people over the last three years – and I apologise if I forget anyone here. First of all, thank you to Rayna Denison and Keith Johnston for agreeing to oversee this research – which required reining in my enthusiasm as much as attempting to tease it out of me and turn it into coherent writing. Thanks to Mark Jancovich, who helped me get started with the PhD at UEA. A big thank you also to Andrew Kirkham and Adam Torel for doing what they do at 4Digital Asia, Third Window, and their other ventures – if they did not do it, this thesis would not exist. Also, a big thank you to my numerous other friends and family – whose support was invaluable, despite the distance between most of them and Norwich. And finally, the biggest thank you of all goes to Christina, for constantly being there with her support and encouragement. 3 Abstract The thesis will examine how DVD distribution can affect Japanese film dissemination in the UK. The media discourse concerning 4Digital Asia and Third Window proposes that this is the principal factor influencing their films’ presence in the UK from 2008 to 2010.

This paper focuses instead on a number of low-budget films that circulated below the radar of Chinese as well as Western film scholars but were important to local young viewers, i.e. a cluster of films that feature deviant and marginalized youth as protagonists. They are very interesting as evidence of perceived social problems in contemporary Hong Kong. The paper aims to outline some main features of these marginalized youth films produced since the mid-1990s. Keywords: Hong Kong, cinema, youth culture, youth film, marginalized youth On the Rooftop A scene set on the rooftop of a skyscraper in central Hong Kong appears in New Police Story(2004), or Xin jingcha gushi, by the Hong Kong director Benny Chan, an action drama that features an aged local police officer struggling to fight a group of trouble-making, tech-savvy teenagers.2 The young people are using the rooftop for an “X-party,” an occasion for showing off their skills of skateboarding and cycling, by doing daredevil stunts along the edge of the building.

i TEAM JAPAN: THEMES OF ‘JAPANESENESS’ IN MASS MEDIA SPORTS NARRATIVES A Dissertation submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Michael Plugh July 2015 Examining Committee Members: Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Doctoral Program Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Doctoral Program John Campbell, Media and Communication Doctoral Program Lance Strate, External Member, Fordham University ii © Copyright 2015 by MichaelPlugh All Rights Reserved iii Abstract This dissertation concerns the reproduction and negotiation of Japanese national identity at the intersection between sports, media, and globalization. The research includes the analysis of newspaper coverage of the most significant sporting events in recent Japanese history, including the 2014 Koshien National High School Baseball Championships, the awarding of the People’s Honor Award, the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, wrestler Hakuho’s record breaking victories in the sumo ring, and the bidding process for the 2020 Olympic Games. 2054 Japanese language articles were examined by thematic analysis in order to identify the extent to which established themes of “Japaneseness” were reproduced or renegotiated in the coverage. The research contributes to a broader understanding of national identity negotiation by illustrating the manner in which established symbolic boundaries are reproduced in service of the nation, particularly via mass media. Furthermore, the manner in which change is negotiated through processes of assimilation and rejection was considered through the lens of hybridity theory. iv To my wife, Ari, and my children, Hiroto and Mia. Orientadora: Profa. Dra. Christine Greiner CÉLIA MAKI TOMIMATSU São Paulo 2017 2 Banca Examinadora _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ São Paulo, ______ de _____________________ de 2017. 3 RESUMO O objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar como o cineasta japonês Hirokazu Koreeda transforma o conceito de ikigai (生きがい) em um recurso comunicacional que afeta o público japonês e as plateias internacionais, na medida em que convoca a vida na sua singularidade cotidiana e não necessariamente a partir de grandes acontecimentos.

Salemba Raya No. 4, Jakarta 10430, Indonesia [email protected] Abstract A film, as a media, acts significantly in popularizing the culture of backpacking tourism, which is closely related to the capitalist values. This research attempts to reveal the capitalist values in Indonesian backpacking films. The data are obtained by applying qualitative content-analysis to 2 (two) Indonesian films, namely Haji Backpacker and Laura & Marsha. The analysis leads to several interesting findings. First, Indonesian backpacking films, either explicitly or implicitly, more-likely prefer foreign tourist destinations. Second, the backpacker ideologies are presented more obviously in the implicit backpacking movie, Laura & Marsha rather than in the more explicit one, Haji Backpacker. Third, films contribute in shifting the ideological meaning of backpacking, which now emphasizes on principle of progress or recency (standardization), individualism (pseudo-individualization and social-cement), and efficiency (fetishism). Further researchers should analyze the effects of the shifting of the meaning based the perspective of the audience and content producers. Keywords: Backpacking, Capitalism, Qualitative Content Analysis, Film Abstrak Sebagai sebuah media, film memiliki peranan penting dalam mempopulerkan budaya wisata backpacking yang erat kaitannya dengan nilai-nilai kapitalisme.
