Objective included: To develop and validate a semi-quantitative food ticklist to estimate energy intake in children. To examine the pattern, and factors associated with obesity in school children. To explore contextual influences on childhood obesity and to gain insights on barriers and facilitators that would help tailor the intervention. -

CONGRATULATIONS, FEZANA The Federation of the Zoroastrian Association of North America (FEZANA) was registered in the State of Illinois, USA, on June 2, 1987 as a non-profit, religious and charitable organization. In the twenty-five years since them FEZANA has had many accomplishments. In July 1996, we undertook a "Strategic Planning" exercise (FEZANA Journal, Fall 1996) which identified four collective goals for the community and the organization. One of the goals was “a thousand points of light” aimed at preserving our community’s religious and cultural entity. This publication, “Eat, Live, Pray: A celebration of Zarathushti culture and cuisine” upholds this goal. Food plays a very important role in our Zarathushti psyche. We create all varieties of food for different occasions; special food for happy occasions and we also have food for the dead in our religious ceremonies. In the Summer, 2011 edition of the FEZANA Journal, Sarosh and Benafsha Khariwala together with Arnavaz Chubb, all in Melbourne, Australia, explored the concept of “Food as Our Identity”. -

Newrozpeace KURDISH NEW YEAR Postcards for Peace
Postcards POUNDS for NEWROZpeace KURDISH NEW YEAR Postcards for peace Postcards for peace Postcards for peace Newroz piroz be! HAPPY NEWROZ WHAT IS NEWROZ? Newroz is the Kurdish celebration of the Persian new year holiday “Nowruz.” Kurdish Newroz coincides with the Spring Equinox and celebrates the beginning of spring. Over the years, Newroz has come to represent new beginnings. • The festival important in terms of Kurdish identity. Though celebrations vary across the Kurdish region, people generally meet up with friends and family, wear colourful traditional clothes, prepare special foods, read poetry and dance. • According to Kurdish legend, Newroz celebrates the return of Spring after the evil Assyrian king, Zuhak, who had serpents growing from his shoulders, was killed by Kaveh, a blacksmith who lost six sons to the king, after a thousand year reign of terror in Kurdistan. Kaveh set fire to the hillsides to celebrate the victory. This legend is now used by the Kurds to remind themselves that they are a different, strong people, and the lighting of the fires has since become a symbol of freedom. It is a tradition to jump over a fire at Newroz. Fire also symbolizes the passing of the dark season, Winter, and the arrival of Spring, the season of light. • Kurds that have moved around the world, continue to celebrate wherever they have set up home as a way of uniting themselves with their fellow people. In Australia, Newroz is not only celebrated as the beginning of the new year but also as Kurdish National Day. The Kurds in Finland celebrate the new year as a way of demonstrating their support for the Kurdish cause. -

Journal of Indian Research (ISSN: 2320-7000) Vol.5, No.4, October-December, 2017, 28-38 Globalization Studies A LINGUISTIC APPROACH TOWARD FOLK CULTURES IN VARIOUS DIMENSIONS OF HUMAN LIFE Dr. Tapas Pal* Dr. Mandana Kolahdouz Mahamadi** ABSTRACT Folk Culture has its roots in the daily life of people. One of these methods is to use the linguistics since some linguistic branches are related to folktales, semiotics, cuisines, geo-linguistic, linguistic landscape etc. Therefore, the present paper through a filed study and content analysis of the pictures, videos and maps aims to analyze folk culture. The results indicate that different cultures use different folk culture while introducing their own culture yet some similarities can be found. Authors suggest that some other comprehensive studies in vast geographical and linguistic territories are needed for having deeper understanding of a global concept such as folk culture. Keywords: Folk Culture, Linguistic landscape, Proverb, Sari,Shop Signs , Shona tombstones , Yashmagh. INTRODUCTION Folk culture is a term used for elements of everyday life in traditional, localized people that are immediately recognizable as belonging to that culture. The conveyance of a sense of place is important in folk culture; even when these elements appear in other regions or cultures, they still retain the identity of their founding culture. In contemporary world, indigenous folk cultures are being threatened and gradually marginalized by other languages and marketing cultures.
