For centuries, the Spanish and Spanish-speaking mestizo (mixed blood) elite oppressed the Mixtec People and their linguistic and cultural practices. These oppressive practices were experienced in Mixtec communities and surrounding urban areas, as well as in domestic and international migrant destinations. In the 1980s, a significant transition occurred in Mexico from indigenismo to a neoliberal multicultural framework. In this transition, discriminatory practices have become increasingly “symbolic,” referring to their assertion in everyday social practices rather than through overt force, obscuring both the perpetrator and the illegitimacy of resulting social hierarchies (Bourdieu, 1991). -

OASISAMERICA, MESOAMERICA Y ARIDOAMERICA En el transcurso de los siglos, las prácticas culturales y las condiciones del medio ambiente propiciaron en algunas zonas el desarrollo de la agricultura como fuente principal de subsistencia y con ello, se definieron alrededor de 2500 a.C. dos grandes áreas o superáreas culturales: Aridoamérica y Mesoamérica. En el primer espacio la fuente principal de vida siguió siendo la caza y recolección, mientras que en Mesoamérica la vida se hizo sedentaria con base en la agricultura. Con el paso del tiempo, alrededor de 500 a.C., por la mejora de las técnicas de cultivo y de riego y el intercambio cultural parte de Aridoamérica (Suroeste de los E.U. y el Noroeste de México) fue ocupada por pueblos sedentarios. Esta región con cultura mixta se le conoce como Oasisamérica. Fue el antropólogo Paul Kirchhoff quien conceptualizó en 1943 estas tres grandes áreas geográficas-culturales: Aridoamérica, Oasisamérica y Mesoamérica. Queremos destacar que se trata de conceptos y que estas áreas no eran inmutables, sino en constante transformación de acuerdo con el desarrollo de las sociedades. Oasisamérica En algunas regiones semiáridas, haciendo uso de algunos ríos como el Gila y el Asunción en Arizona, los pobladores no quedaron en el nivel del nomadismo gracias a la adopción de nuevas técnicas e instrumentos de trabajo y el intercambio con las culturas mesoamericanas. Así, dentro de Aridoamérica se empezó a distinguir, alrededor de 500 a.C., un área cultural que se conoce como Oasisamérica. CULTURE, COMMUNITY AND THE MULTICULTURAL INDIVIDUAL Liberalism and the Challenge of Multiculturality by DIMITRIOS (JIM) MOLOS A thesis submitted to the Graduate Program in Philosophy in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada December, 2012 Copyright © Dimitrios (Jim) Molos, 2012 ABSTRACT Every theory of liberal multiculturalism is premised on some account of the nature of culture, cultural difference and social reality, or what I call “the conditions of multi- culturality”. In this dissertation, I offer a revised account of the conditions and challenge of multiculturality. Beginning with the widely accepted idea that individuals depend on both culture and community as social preconditions for choice, freedom and autonomy, and informing this idea with collectivist and individualist lessons from Tyler Burge’s famous externalist thought-experiment, my analysis shows that social contexts are multi- cultural when they are characterized by a plurality of social communities offering distinct sets of cultural norms, and individuals are multicultural to the extent that they are capable of using cultural norms from various social communities. The depth, pervasiveness, and complexity of multiculturality raises important normative questions about fair and just terms for protecting and promoting social communities under conditions of internal and external cultural contestation, and these questions are not only restricted to cases involv- ing internal minorities. As a theory of cultural justice, liberal multiculturalism must respond to the challenge of multiculturality generated by cultural difference per se, but it cannot do so adequately in all cases armed with only the traditional tools of toleration, freedom of association and exit, fundamental rights and freedoms, and internal political autonomy. -

Given its history of colonialism and imperialism but also hybridity and mestizaje, Latin America has emerged as a rich and complicated breeding ground for national and nationalist rhetorics that are deeply steeped in notions of femininity, masculinity, and other gendered constructs. While gendered nationalist tropes have been forged through various social and political means in Latin America, visual cultural production in its many forms has been a powerful vehicle through which these ideologies are promoted, disseminated and inscribed upon the social psyche. This graduate seminar is thus dedicated to the perilous history of gender, nation and visual culture in Latin America. Art, film, and mass media, among other visual “artifacts”, will be at the center of our discussions, queries and debates in class this quarter. We will explore varied and diverse themes such as the following: 1) casta paintings and their role in the formation of New Spain’s colonial state, 2) Eva Perón or Evita as a national icon in Argentina, 3) telenovelas and cultural identity in Brazil and Mexico, and many others. -

8 Sub-National Movements, Cultural Flow Sub-National Movements, Cultural Flow, the Modern State and the Malleability of Political Space: From Rational Choice to Transcultural Perspective and Back Again Subrata Mitra, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg Introduction Using the Telengana movement in South India as a template, this article juxtaposes two methods of analysing the phenomenon of sub-national movements (a special type of ethno-national movement) within the larger framework of the challenge of state-formation and nation-building in multi- ethnic, post-colonial states.1 The methods are as follows: first, explanatory models based on conventional tools of comparative politics such as conflicts of interest, fixed national and regional boundaries, and the strategic manoeuvres of political leaders and their followers. Second, a transcultural approach that draws on political perceptions and behaviour influenced by deep memory, cultural flow, and the hybridisation of indigenous and imported categories. This article applies these methods to the Telengana movement in South India, first, within the theoretical perspective of the rational politics of cultural nationalism, and then extending the method to introduce explanatory phenomena that belong more broadly to the transcultural approach. Though the empirical exemplars are drawn mostly from India, the mthod is applicable to the wider world of sub-national challenges to the modern state. Sub-national movements belong to the generic category of collective efforts used to assert cultural nationalism in a territorial space that corresponds to a homeland that its advocates strongly believe to be legitimately theirs. Gerónimo Sarmiento Cruz Chapter I, 5/15 Draft — do not circulate Dear workshoppers, Thank you for taking the time to read and discuss my work. What follows is still a rough draft of the first chapter of my dissertation, provisionally titled Anational Poetics. In brief, by anational I mean an approach to an order of ideas, images, and concepts whose construction and inner logics are independent of the socio-historical ubiquity of the nation. Mainly relying on two concepts, Deleuze and Guattari’s minor literature and James C. Scott’s hidden transcripts, I am elaborating the anational as a hermeneutics allowing us to read against the backdrop of the nation in order to trace and constellate alternative accounts of collectivities as formulated by minority poetries and poetics. The chapter I am workshopping analyzes the work of Gloria Anzaldúa through the lens of the nation form. In relation to the anational, a lot of the work I do in this chapter is still preparatory—I begin to sketch the concept only towards the end of the chapter. I apologize for the length of the document, yet it is important for me that I workshop the entire thing so that I can assess whether the chapter-format is actually working well and conveying what I intend.
