AC Milan v FC Bayern München MATCH PRESS KIT Giuseppe Meazza, Milan Wednesday, 8 March 2006 - 20:45 CET First knockout round - Matchday 8

Andriy Shevchenko©s second-half equaliser in the Fuûball Arena München has made FC Bayern München©s task more difficult as they look to gain a first aggregate victory over AC Milan in UEFA club competition. To achieve that ambition they will have to win at the San Siro or achieve a high-scoring draw.

First unbeaten visitors · Shevchenko©s penalty forced a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their first knockout round tie and enabled the Italian club to become the first visiting team to avoid defeat at the German champions© new stadium.

Penalty leveller · Bayern gained a deserved half-time advantage through 's stunning strike but could not force a second goal. When Valérien Ismaël handled, it gave Shevchenko the chance to put Milan in the driving seat.

Happy omens · If they complete the job on their own ground Carlo Ancelotti©s team will begin to believe more strongly in their chances of lifting the European Champion Clubs© Cup for a seventh time.

· On each occasion in which they have overcome Germany©s most famous club side over two matches they have gone on to lift a trophy. It happened in the European Cups of 1989/90 and 2002/03 and also in the 1967/68 UEFA Cup Winners© Cup.

· In those six matches Bayern prevailed just once with Milan claiming four victories. The last encounter, the 2002/03 first group stage, ended in 2-1 home and away victories for the Italian side.

PSV escape · Milan©s recent home games in the competition underline the difficulties Bayern face. Since losing two fixtures in the San Siro in the 2003/04 group stage, Milan have won ten of eleven fixtures on their own turf with PSV Eindhoven, in this season©s group, the only visitors to escape unbeaten. They earned a 0-0 draw.

· Historically the Italian giants do not make a habit of losing to German visitors. In 14 home games they have won eleven and lost only twice.

Unconvincing results · Milan©s campaign in this season©s group stage hit something of a roadblock on Matchday 2 with a 2-2 draw against FC Schalke 04. Another draw followed by an away defeat in two successive games against PSV made them fear for their qualifying ticket.

· Two finishing victories in Group E, including a 4-0 away win against Fenerbahçe SK with Shevchenko scoring all four, put them in better heart and a narrow home success against Schalke kept PSV©s strong challenge at bay.

Tough test last year · Milan©s passage to last season©s final where they lost a dramatic encounter to Liverpool FC on penalties, included 1-0 wins, home and away against Manchester United FC in the first knockout round. The striking skills of Hernán Crespo proved the difference each time.

German finalists · Milan have twice faced German clubs in the UEFA Cup Winners© Cup final. In the 1967/68 campaign they defeated Hamburger SV 2-0 in Rotterdam, while in the 1973/74 edition, played again in the Dutch city, they lost by the same scoreline to 1. FC Magdeburg.

Bayern strong in group · Bayern faced another Italian side, Juventus, in the group stage and honours finished even with both sides winning at home ± and both by 2-1 However, Felix Magath©s men, who reeled off three victories in the first three games, had to settle for runners-up spot in Group A after they dropped two points on Matchday 6 away to Club Brugge KV.

Last season©s run · It will be some comfort to the German champions to recall that at this stage last season they hit top form, winning their first game with Arsenal FC 3-1. Although the English team gained a measure of revenge at Highbury two weeks later they could only reduce the arrears by a single goal.

· Two thrilling games with Chelsea FC then ensued and the 4-2 defeat suffered on their return to London gave Bayern plenty to do on their own turf. A 3-2 victory was not quite enough to prolong the Munich team©s participation.

Five successive defeats · A reminder of their record in Italy will not fill Bayern with over-confidence as they try and secure a seventh quarter-final place in the last nine seasons. They have lost on the last five occasions they have played Italian clubs on their own grounds but they did win the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League final in Milan, with a 5-4 success on penalties against Valencia CF after a 1-1 draw. Their record away to Italian clubs shows eight games played with six lost and two wins.

Knockout format · Clubs play two matches against each other on a home and away basis, with the team scoring the greater aggregate of goals qualifying for the next round. In the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more goals away qualifies. If this proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, the away goals count double (ie. the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks.

· Karimi came off at half-time in Saturday©s defeat by Hamburg with an ankle injury that will cause him to miss the Milan return. However, the match was his all-important 25th first-team appearance for the club, automatically triggering a one-year extension clause in his contract.

Head coach profiles

Carlo Ancelotti One of only four people ± the others being Miguel Muñoz, Giovanni Trapattoni and Johan Cruyff ± to have lifted the European Champion Clubs© Cup as both a player and coach, Carlo Ancelotti is one of the most highly-regarded young coaches in European football. He claimed the UEFA Champions League in 2003 in only his second season at the AC Milan helm (and would have added another were it not for Liverpool FC©s stunning fightback in Istanbul), and has added Serie A and medals to an individual trophy cabinet teeming with honours.

His coaching career is promising to become every bit as illustrious as his days as a no-nonsense midfielder. Ancelotti started out at AS Roma, winning the Scudetto in 1983, before moving to Milan three years later after his hometown club deemed him too injury-prone. He quickly went about proving them wrong, thriving at the San Siro in five years of unyielding success which brought two more Serie A crowns and back-to-back European Cup wins in 1989 and 1990.

He started his coaching career in similar vein, leading AC Reggiana to promotion in his debut season in 1996. His success attracted the attention of Parma FC, whose decision to bring him to the Ennio Tardini was duly rewarded with an unprecedented second-placed finish. By 1998 he was at Juventus and although he never managed to better runners-up spot, Ancelotti did earn a return to the San Siro.

Felix Magath Once an elegant creative midfielder for West Germany and Hamburger SV, Felix Magath has added steel and discipline to his methods to become the country©s foremost coach. He has proved himself equal to the task of replacing Ottmar Hitzfeld at FC Bayern München, helping the Bavarians achieve domestic dominance.

Magath enjoyed a glittering international career, his 43 caps encompassing victory in the 1980 UEFA European Championship in Italy and the 1982 and 1986 FIFA World Cups, both of which saw the midfielder collect runners-up medals. A one-club man, Magath scored 46 times in 306 Bundesliga matches during a ten-year playing career at Hamburg, writing himself into folklore by scoring the only goal of the 1983 European Champion Clubs© Cup final against Juventus, Hamburg©s only continental title.

Magath has been rather more nomadic as a coach. He started at Hamburg, moving on to 1. FC Nürnberg, Werder Bremen, and VfB Stuttgart, where he enjoyed four fruitful seasons. In 2002/03, Magath was voted coach of the year in Germany after guiding his young team to second place in the Bundesliga - feats which attracted Bayern©s attention. He switched to Munich in May 2004, and promptly won the title at the first attempt having set a Bundesliga record of 15 successive league wins.

Referee

Name Nat. DoB UCL UEFA Valentin Ivanov RUS 04.07.1961 24 41

Valentin Ivanov was born in Moscow on 4 July 1961, and is still based in the Russian capital. A physical education teacher by profession, he began refereeing in 1989, was a top-division referee four years later, and joined the FIFA international list in 1997.

After various European assignments at youth level, Ivanov moved swiftly up the refereeing ladder with his designation for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final round in Slovakia in 2000. After some impressive displays, he was duly rewarded with regular fixtures in the FIFA World Cup, UEFA EURO 2004™ and the UEFA Champions League.

Along the way he was appointed for his biggest matches to date - the FIFA Confederations© Cup final between Cameroon and France in Paris in the summer of 2003, and the annual European/South American Cup match between CA Boca Juniors and AC Milan in Yokohama.

Last season, Ivanov took charge of six UEFA Champions League matches and three World Cup qualifiers before rounding 2005 off in fine style with a commanding performance in the World Cup qualifier between Wales and England and FC Porto©s UEFA Champions League meeting with FC Internazionale Milano.

Back in his native Russia, Ivanov has also carved out a terrific reputation for himself. So impressive was his performance in the Russian Cup final between FC Lokomotiv Moskva and FC Anzhi Makhachkala in 2001 that he was awarded Russian football©s golden game in 2002 between Moscow heavyweights PFC CSKA Moskva and Lokomotiv.

The following year he was the man in the middle as the same two Moscow giants locked horns in the Russian Super Cup and in 2005 he officiated the crunch league match which decided who would finish second in the league between FC Spartak Moskva and Lokomotiv.

Domestic news

AC Milan were forced to work hard for their points at the weekend but will nevertheless be confident of edging past FC Bayern München at the San Siro on Wednesday. The German side©s coach Felix Magath also remains buoyant, despite his team suffering their first domestic defeat in their new stadium.

AC Milan 3-0 Empoli FC The Rossoneri won 3-0 at home against struggling Empoli on Saturday, but the one-sided scoreline did not reflect the action as the visitors were kept at bay for much of the encounter. Filippo Inzaghi scored the crucial opener from close range just 13 minutes from time, and that opened the floodgates as Andriy Shevchenko added a second four minutes later before Inzaghi diverted in his strike-partner©s late free-kick to seal an emphatic-looking victory. However, the scoreline failed to mask the performance for Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti, who said: "I could have changed everybody at the end of the first half. We were really bad; too slow, too passive, but we pushed harder after the break.

"I©ve not decided on the lineup against Bayern but I have options in every department," Ancelotti concluded. There are not too many choices in defence as Paolo Maldini and Cafu are still ruled out but Jaap Stam will be back having served his suspension. Midfielder Massimo Ambrosini missed out against Empoli as did Brazilian Dida so Australian Zeljko Kalac retained the goalkeeping jersey having made his Milan league debut in the 2-0 win at US Città di Palermo on 26 February. He marshalled a defence that included Alessandro Costacurta, 40 next month, to a second successive clean sheet. Alessandro Nesta, Serginho, Andrea Pirlo and Kaká could all return having been rested on Saturday evening.

FC Bayern München 1-2 Hamburger SV Nigel de Jong©s late strike proved decisive as Bayern suffered their first domestic defeat at their new Fuûball Arena München home after 13 consecutive wins. The Bundesliga leaders looked to have earned a share of the spoils when Mehmet Scholl cancelled out Guy Demel©s first-half goal seven minutes from time, but with just a minute to go Dutch international De Jong scored to consign Bayern to only their second Bundesliga defeat of the season, with the first coming in the reverse fixture against the same opponents.

"We lost against Hamburg in the first half of the season and did not become worse because of it," said Magath. "Instead, we left the others behind and if that happens again, I can live with this defeat." A miserable afternoon was completed when Iranian striker Ali Karimi sustained a foot injury that could keep him out for several weeks, joining Owen Hargreaves and Roque Santa Cruz on the sidelines. Bixente Lizarazu (leg) and José Paolo Guerrero (flu) also sat out Saturday©s defeat, with Philipp Lahm and Roy Makaay taking their places, while Oliver Kahn returned to the side after recovering from a bruised thigh.

General competition information

UEFA©s most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs© Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

· Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

· Deadlines: UEFA Champions League press kits are provided to media by uefa.com. For every UEFA Champions League match, two press kits are issued in English: Sunday at 22:00CET with a match preview update on Monday at 22:00CET for Tuesday©s matches. For Wednesday©s matches, the press kit is issued on Monday at 22:00CET with the match preview update version published on Tuesday at 22:00CET. Multilingual versions of press kits, determined on a match-by-match basis, are also issued with similar deadlines.

UEFA information

A new UEFA Champions League trophy will make its first public appearance at the traditional handover ceremony in Paris on Friday.

The new trophy ± engraved with the names of the 50 previous winners ± will be presented by Real Madrid CF©s Francisco ©Paco© Gento, a member of the first team to lift the European Champion Clubs© Cup. Madrid©s 4-3 victory over Stade de Reims Champagne - also in Paris, at the Parc des Princes, in 1956 - was the first of the Spanish side©s nine triumphs, with Gento featuring in six. The ceremony will take place from 12.00CET in the Salle des Fêtes at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris.

Gento will be joined on stage by Steven Gerrard, the last captain to claim the old trophy after Liverpool FC©s thrilling success against AC Milan last season. The silverware in Liverpool©s permanent possession was, fittingly, the fifth model to be cast in the competition©s history. The original was awarded to Real Madrid CF following their sixth continental conquest in 1966. Other multiple-winners Milan (six), FC Bayern München and AFC Ajax (both four) own the other trophies.

Gerrard and Gento, embracing the competition©s half-century, will then hand the new cup to UEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson, who will in turn give it to the Lord Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, for safekeeping and public display until the final at the Stade de France on 17 May - maintaining a tradition dating back to the 1997 showpiece in Munich.

After the ceremony, the draws for the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be made in the host city of a final for the first time. No teams will be seeded, and sides from the same country may play each other. Mr Olsson will be assisted by this year©s UEFA Champions League final ambassador, Laurent Blanc, who was in the France team that lifted the 1998 FIFA World Cup at the Stade de France and triumphed at UEFA EURO 2000™.
