UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FIRST KNOCK-OUT ROUND, FIRST LEG

MANCHESTER UNITED FC v AC MILAN

UEFA Champions League football returns to for the first time in 2005 with a thrilling clash between two former champions of Europe in one of the many ties that coiuld easily have been this season’s final. United fans will remember that their team produced epic performances against Italian opposition en route to the 1999 final, whereas AC Milan’s encounters with English opposition are surprisingly thin on the ground. They have played against English teams only three times in the last quarter of a century and have not met any English sides since they were drawn against both Chelsea FC and Leeds United AFC in the 2000/01 campaign. A thrilling and evenly-balanced tie is in prospect.

∑ This will be the third tie between the clubs in UEFA competitions with AC Milan successful on the previous two occasions, both in the Champion Clubs’ Cup semi-finals. Though Manchester United won both games at Old Trafford, the margin of AC Milan’s wins in in the 1957/58 and 1968/69 seasons enabled them to progress. ∑ The clubs’ first meeting was the first European game after the Munich air crash, while the latter win eliminated the holders of the competition. ∑ In the 1957/58 tie, ’s father Cesare took part in the game, and in 1968/69 Fabio Cudicini, father of the Chelsea FC player, was AC Milan’s keeper. ∑ Sir hopes it will be third time lucky for the Premiership club. "I had a feeling we were going to get AC Milan. They have had a fantastic spell under 's influence and are a very experienced team, one of the most experienced in Europe. We have never played against AC Milan while I've been manager, but, if you look back over the years to our matches against Juventus in particular, we have enjoyed some of the greatest moments of all in Europe against Italian opposition and we are really looking forward to these games." ∑ United have a useful home against Italian clubs in UEFA competitions. In 10 games at Old Trafford, only Juventus (1-0 in the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League) have won at Manchester with United winning seven and drawing two. The 3-1 against AC Fiorentina in the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League is the biggest win. ∑ This will be the 22nd game against Italian clubs in UEFA competitions for Manchester United FC, with the record standing at nine wins and nine defeats and three draws. ∑ AC Milan have a similar win-loss record against English clubs in UEFA club competitions – seven wins and seven defeats with eight draws in 22 previous games. ∑ However AC Milan are still searching for their first win against English clubs on English soil. All seven defeats have come in with three draws (all scoreless) in their 10 visits. The heaviest defeat was actually in Manchester, at the ground of the Manchester City FC neighbours by 3-0 in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup third round. ∑ AC Milan have not scored against English clubs on their last five visits. They have managed four goals in their 10 games in England, the last scored in April 1972 by Romeo Benetti at Tottenham Hotspur FC in the semi final, first leg, of the UEFA Cup.

First Knock-out Round First Leg Manchester 23 February 2005 MANCHESTER UNITED FC - AC MILAN Manchester United FC match statistics ∑ This is Manchester United FC’s 10th season in the UEFA Champions League (a record shared with FC ), and this is their ninth season in succession (a record). ∑ The last UEFA Champions League season missed by Manchester United FC was in 1995/96 when champions Blackburn Rovers FC were England’s sole representatives. ∑ This will be Manchester United FC's 108th match in the UEFA Champions League, two games less than Real Madrid CF. United are second to Real Madrid CF in number of games won (62 to 56) and goals scored (219 to 200) in the all-time competition lists. ∑ Since their last home defeat in the competition (3-2 by RC Deportivo La Coruña on 17 October 2001), Manchester United FC have played 20 home games in the UEFA Champions League with 16 wins and four draws. ∑ United scored 12 goals in their three home games in the UEFA Champions League this season against Fenerbahçe SK (6-2), AC Sparta (4-1) and (2-1) with Ruud Nistelrooy and both equalling and setting records. ∑ In the 4-1 home win against AC Sparta Praha in the last match, van Nistelrooy became the fourth player in UEFA Champions league history to score four goals in a match. He joins , and Dado Prso in the ‘four- club’. He has now scored 42 UEFA Champions League goals. ∑ The 6-2 home win against Fenerbahçe SK on Matchday 2 this season, with a hat-trick from Wayne Rooney, was the highest score by Manchester United in their previous 76 games in the competition, since a similar scoreline against Brøndby IF in 1998. ∑ Rooney joins Marco van Basten (AC Milan v IFK Göteborg in 1992 (4 goals); (Newcastle United FC v FC Barcelona in 1997) and Ayegbeni (Maccabi Haifa v Olympiacos CFP in 2002) by scoring a hat-trick on debut in the UEFA Champions League proper but is the first to score three goals on both his club and UEFA Champions League debut combined. ∑ But Rooney is not the youngest player to score a hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League. That honour belongs to the competition’s leading goalscorer, Raúl of Real Madrid CF, who netted his three goals nine years ago in a 6-1 win over Ferencvárosi TC at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, on 18.10.1995, aged 18 years and 114 days. ∑ United have lost only six of their last 40 UEFA Champions League games. ∑ They have scored a goal in 40 of their last 45 UEFA Champions League games. ∑ Manchester United FC and AC Milan have not met since 1969 but Sir Alex Ferguson and Carlo Ancelotti came face-to-face in the UEFA Champions League semi-final in 1999 when the Italian was coach of Juventus and , then also with Juventus, scored two goals in the opening 12 minutes in having drawn 1-1 at Old Trafford. United fought back to win 3-2, which Ferguson subsequently called "the greatest performance ever produced by a team under my management." AC Milan match statistics ∑ AC Milan got their ninth UEFA Champions League campaign off to a flying start by topping a group for the seventh time. Their only second place finish came in 1994/95. ∑ The Italians have an excellent defensive record in the UEFA Champions League with just 67 goals conceded, and 39 clean sheets, in 83 games at one every 111 minutes. ∑ AC Milan have a record of P 66 W 33 D 17 L 16 F 91 A 56 in the group stages compared to P 17 W 8 D 6 L 3 F 24 A 11 in knock-out football. ∑ AC Milan were one of the first 16 pioneering clubs who took part in the inaugural Champion Clubs’ Cup competition back in 1955/56. They reached the semi-finals before losing to Real Madrid CF. This year marks the 50th anniversary of AC Milan’s very first fixture in UEFA club competition against German side, 1. FC Saarbrücken.

But this is the type of challenge that everyone would like and I'm confident that Old Trafford will help us. It will be a fantastic night. People are saying they are the opponents I wanted but it simply isn't so. I thought that they would be paired with us. We have avoided Milan in the past, playing Inter and Juventus, so I believed that this time we would have to meet them. I'm sure they didn't want to play us either."

First Knock-out Round First Leg Manchester 23 February 2005 MANCHESTER UNITED FC - AC MILAN AC Milan news ∑ AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini completed 20 years with the Rossoneri during last month's game against - by coincidence the same opposition as when he made his debut on January 20, 1985 aged 16. Since then he has won seven League championships, four Champion Clubs’ Cup/UEFA Champions League titles, four UEFA Super Cups, the Italian Cup and three Italian Super Cups. Maldini is also Italy's most-capped player, having represented the Azzurri 126 times. ∑ Old Trafford holds special memories for Carlo Ancelotti who led AC Milan to victory in the 2003 UEFA Champions League final at the stadium against Juventus. "It's a difficult draw, but it should make for an interesting contest," he said. "When they are at full strength United are very strong, but we'll be playing in a stadium that has brought us luck and that'll be a consolation. Anyway, if Milan want to win the Champions League, sooner or later we to have beat these big sides." ∑ , who left United in 2001, has been counting the days until he returns to Old Trafford. "I was at Manchester for three years and will now return as an opponent. It will be great to return to Old Trafford and meet my old team and fans. It will be a difficult game as they are a strong side, but we will want to win there and I want it to be special. I haven't returned since my departure and the move to Lazio happened so quickly I never had a chance to say goodbye to a lot of the friends I'd made. Also the fans who were so fantastic to me during my time in Manchester. I hope I get a nice reception from the supporters because they meant so much to me when I was a United player." ∑ It could be a "double Dutch" head-to-head with Jaap Stam up against his Netherlands team-mate , who has been sidelined with a calf injury. "If Ruud isn't fit to play against us it would undoubtedly be a bonus but we're not thinking that way." ∑ When the transfer window closed on 31 January, AC Milan had added No 30 Harvey Esajas to their list, and released Argentine international (No 19). Coloccini has joined RC Deportivo La Coruña. ∑ AC Milan won five of the nine honours at Italy's annual Players’ Association Awards ceremony. Midfielder Kaká won both the overall Best Player award for 2004 and Best Foreigner award. Paolo Maldini was chosen as the Best Defender, Carlo Ancelotti in the coaching category and striker for the best goal of 2004, scored against Parma last January. The awards are voted on by all of the players in . ∑ AC Milan began February with a 4-1 win at FC Messina Peloro in the midweek round of matches of 2 February. Hernán Crespo and each scored twice and the team was (4-3-1-2) Dida; (Stam 70), Nesta, Maldini, Kaladze; Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf; Kaká (Dhorasoo 87); Tomasson, Crespo (Ambrosini 74). ∑ AC Milan followed up with 2-1 home win over S.S. Lazio on Sunday 6 February with late goals from Andriy Shevchenko (72) and Hernan Crespo (90+4). The Milan team was (4-3- 1-2) Dida; Stam, Nesta, Maldini, Kaladze (Serginho 60); Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf (Cafu 62); Kaká; Tomasson (Shevchenko 57), Crespo. ∑ On Sunday 13 February, AC Milan visited Reggina Calcio and continued their recent run with a 1-0 win, courtesy of an own goal from Reggina full back Marco Zamboni and 39 minutes. The team was (4-3-1-2) Dida; Cafu (Stam 62), Nesta, Maldini, Kaladze; Gattuso, Ambrosini, Seedorf; Kaká ( 82); Shevchenko, Crespo (Serginho 77). ∑ A 1-0 home win last Saturday against took AC Milan to the top of the table with their fourth successive win, after Juventus could only draw 0-0 with FC Messina Peloro. Juventus had an eight-point cushion at the top at the start of February and have taken only four points from four games, with AC Milan collecting 12. ∑ The winner against Cagliari came after two minutes of added-time through substitute Serginho, from a Cafu cross, and was achieved despite being reduced to 10 men after 76 minutes when Giuseppe Pancaro was sent off for two yellow card offences. First Knock-out Round First Leg Manchester 23 February 2005 MANCHESTER UNITED FC - AC MILAN ∑ Milan fielded (4-3-1-2) Dida; Cafu, Stam, Maldini, Pancaro; Brocchi (Serginho 57), Pirlo, Seedorf: Rui Costa; Shevchenko (Crespo 14), Tomasson (Kaká 71), and the unused substitutes were Abbiati, Nesta, Ambrosini and Dhorasoo. AC Milan team news ∑ The win against Cagliari came at a considerable cost when Andriy Shevchenko fractured a cheekbone and an eye socket in a collision with a Cagliari defender after just 11 minutes. Initial diagnosis suggested an absence of two to four weeks. ∑ AC Milan doctor Jean Pierre Meersseman said: “With a protective mask he could be back in two weeks, but it depends on his psychological reaction after the injury.” ∑ Carlo Ancelotti added: “It is always difficult when you lose your best forward, especially in a week when we play Manchester United and Inter. But, as you saw against Cagliari, the players are motivated and wanted to win, even when we had only 10.” ∑ Filippo Inzaghi, who had recently recovered from ankle surgery, had another operation last month, this time on the fractured right hand he sustained in the Italian Cup victory over Udinese Calcio. Inzaghi made his first appearance since October 20 when he came on as a second-half substitute in the quarter-final first leg on January 26. The striker was on the pitch for 20 minutes of the 3-2 win but is out of this game. ∑ Three players who did not start against Cagliari at the weekend are expected to be in the starting line-up for Old Trafford. Nesta, Kaká and Gattuso were kept in reserve Other information ∑ One of the curiosities of this week’s matches is that only one is being played in a capital city. Even though the Catalans and Monegasques might prefer to draw shades of meaning, only three of the last 16 clubs in the competition are based in the capital city of the country they represent – Real Madrid CF and the two clubs. ∑ During the group phase of the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League, each club received a starting fee of 2.5 million Swiss francs, plus an appearance fee of 500,000 per game during the group phase (in other words, 3 million for six matches). The bonus for reaching the last 16 is 2.5 million francs. ∑ Taking into account the performance bonuses of 500,000 francs for a win and 250,000 for a draw, Juventus go into this round as the top earners with 10.75m francs, followed by FC Internazionale with 10.5m. Olympique Lyonnais, Werder Bremen, Chelsea FC and AC Milan have each earned 10.25m, while five other clubs (AS Monaco, , Real Madrid CF, Manchester United FC and Arsenal FC) have totalled 10m. FC, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern München and PSV have accumulated 9.75m, leaving defending champions FC Porto with the lowest revenue of 9.5m francs. As a very rough guide, three Swiss francs are around two euros. ∑ In following rounds, each of the eight quarter-finalists will receive 3 million and the semi- finalists will add a further 4 million. In the final, the runner-up will receive 6 million and the champion will pocket 10 million. ∑ In addition, clubs retain gate receipts from home games and receive payments from the so- called Market Pool. This is based on the proportional values of different TV markets and the number of clubs competing from any specific country. It is a complex equation and precise figures are not available until later in the season. ∑ Last season, the English clubs were the top earners, with Chelsea FC receiving just over 44 million Swiss francs. The champions, FC Porto, totalled fractionally under 30 million francs, while the silver medallists, AS Monaco, finished in fourth place behind the three English clubs in the revenue league with earnings of just over 40 million. ∑ The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League will be held at the House of European Football in Nyon on Friday 18 March 2005. At this stage, clubs from the same national association will no longer be kept apart, so everything is possible….

First Knock-out Round First Leg Manchester 23 February 2005 MANCHESTER UNITED FC - AC MILAN Update

∑ Sir Alex Ferguson has been wondering whether he should recall Ruud van Nistelrooy to the starting XI. The Dutch striker has been sidelined for three months because of an Achilles injury but has yet to return to first-team action. However, Ferguson has proved already this season, when Rio Ferdinand returned from an eight-month suspension for failing to take a drugs test against Liverpool FC, that he is not afraid to push players back into battle. "Ruud will certainly be involved but clearly I have some big decisions to make. We may be putting him in cold but he has been great in training and every time he plays in a European game, you just know he is going to score." ∑ Ryan Giggs, who has been struggling with a hamstring strain, is confident of being fit. "Training has gone okay. I have a full week behind me now, so hopefully everything will be fine. We have played in some massive games down the years but there are none bigger than AC Milan. They have huge strength in depth. You tend to forget the number of quality players they have in their squad. To have a chance of beating them, we’ll have to show the kind of form we have been producing in our other games recently.” ∑ “This is the sort of challenge all players want. We all enjoy playing in the Premiership and the FA Cup but in the Champions League you are pitting yourself against the cream of Europe. When you look at the history and players they have had, and the whole structure of the club, they are very similar to us. It is two great teams meeting and we are all really looking forward to it." ∑ Sir Alex Ferguson has urged his players to seize the moment against the six-time European champions. Their first competitive clash with Manchester United FC for 36 years is the biggest test so far for Ferguson's latest team and a significant step up for Wayne Rooney (19) and Cristiano Ronaldo (20). ∑ "Just because a lot of my players still have their futures in front of them, it doesn't mean you should ignore nights like these. Tomorrow may never come. We have an opportunity to win this cup this year, no question about that. We have been equipped to win the tournament for quite a few years now, but this year we are particularly capable of doing it. With the maturity we see every week in Ronaldo and Rooney, the return of Ruud van Nistelrooy and the form of Roy Keane, and Ryan Giggs, we must have a fantastic chance. AC Milan represent a big hurdle for us, but they will be thinking exactly the same. What we need is a high performance level and a little bit of luck. Hopefully we will get both of them." ∑ The United manager was also pleased that his strikers were getting fit: “For much of this season we have only had one or two strikers available, now we have four. Wayne Rooney, fortunately, has been fit for most of the time. But now, as well as Ruud, we have Alan Smith back, and is recovering confidence.” ∑ Though many predict a tight game at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson believes a capacity crowd could be pleasantly surprised with the excitement on offer. "Milan have great experience in defence but they also have options in attack. The injury to Andryi Shevchenko is a loss but it would be worse if they didn't have such quality to bring in. They could push Kaká further forward and choose Rui Costa, or they could select Serginho or Jon Dahl Tomasson. They are all full internationals with incredible experience. I am pretty sure Milan will try to win the game and they certainly know we are going to attack them, so it could be more open than many people think." ∑ Rio Ferdinand suggested: “It’s taken us a while to reach the level of consistency we wanted, but I think we have reached that level now. Hopefully we can take our league form into the Champions League. I was asked who we wanted in the draw and I don’t think at

UEFA Press Information

First Knock-out Round First Leg Manchester 23 February 2005 MANCHESTER UNITED FC - AC MILAN this stage that it matters. All the teams will pose different problems. AC Milan have a great history and tradition like us and it will make for a great tie.” ∑ “It would be fantastic to win the competition. When I was at Leeds we drew 0-0 with Valencia in the first leg of the semi-final and I thought we might do it. But they played us off the park in the return leg. That sort of experience that will help me against Milan.” ∑ Carlo Ancelotti admitted he may be forced into a tactical rethink for this game after leading goalscorer Andriy Shevchenko was ruled out with a fractured cheekbone. The Ukrainian forward is expected to be out of action for the next two weeks after undergoing reconstructive surgery. Ancelotti has to decide whether to play with Jon Dahl Tomasson and Hernán Crespo or to opt for a more conservative line-up, with Crespo as sole striker. "We have several possible solutions but I will have to consider them," said Ancelotti. "Shevchenko is an important player for us but my only consolation is that without him we have still managed to play well." ∑ "I want my team to play to their best possible level. We are happy to return to the Champions League and this will give us great motivation. Undoubtedly possession will be crucial and it’s fundamental that we don't allow them to take control of the game." ∑ “These are two teams with a different approach. United have a more attacking, aggressive style, while Milan are more technical and better at keeping possession.” ∑ He was unconcerned about the return of Ruud van Nistelrooy. "It means very little. Our intention is not to adapt to their play but to play our game. Manchester have great quality in attack, they use the wings a lot and we will have to make sure we stop them." ∑ Jaap Stam is looking forward to returning to Old Trafford for the first time since his transfer to S.S. Lazio three-and-a-half years ago. "I'm ready to return. I still have some friends there and from what they tell me, I don't think I will be booed. In fact, I expect to be applauded and recognised. It is a difficult draw for us but in the UEFA Champions League you have to beat the best teams to win it. Whatever happens, the two matches are bound to be special occasions because it's not often that two such huge clubs face each other in such an important match." ∑ Paolo Maldini was captain of AC Milan when they beat Juventus in the 2003 UEFA Champions League final at Old Trafford. "The memory of that night gave me a nice feeling when I turned up for training." You look in the training rooms for the place where you sat, and it is only natural to talk about what happened. But this visit will be a totally different experience for us. For a start, we will not have half the stadium cheering for us - so in that sense it will be even more difficult." ∑ Maldini believes AC Milan will be up against one of the best strike forces in Europe - even if Ruud van Nistelrooy does not play. He knows he will still end up defending against players such as Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, Louis Saha and Alan Smith. “Given the players they have, there is no doubt Manchester United are among the best in Europe. I don't know how often they have all played together, or whether they will do against us - but it is obviously one of the major weapons they have at their disposal." ∑ The AC Milan squad that has travelled to the game is: Dida, Fiore, Abbiati, Cafu, Maldini, Kaladze, Costacurta, Gattuso, Rui Costa, Crespo, Nesta, Simic, Tomasson, Seedorf, Pirlo, Kaka, Ambrosini, Dhorasoo, Pancaro, Serginho, Stam, Brocchi.
