AC v FC Barcelona MATCH PRESS KIT , Milan Tuesday, 18 April 2006 - 20:45 CET Semi-finals - Matchday 11

AC Milan have never lost a UEFA Champions League semi-final and the Rossoneri will want to extend that sequence to five successes when they welcome FC Barcelona to for the first of what should be two enthralling encounters between superpowers of the European game.

Goals galore · The Italian club will hope to lay the foundations for a second successive appearance in the final of ©s leading club competition by maintaining their imperious home form. They saw off FC Bayern München and then in the knockout rounds with second-leg victories by 4-1 and 3-1 respectively at San Siro. None of the other semi-finalists boast such potent results on home soil.

· In this season©s tournament they have scored 13 goals in five games at San Siro, bagging three on three occasions and four on another. Since losing two home fixtures in the 2003/04 group stage, they have won 12 of 13 matches on their own turf with PSV Eindhoven, in this season©s group, the only visitors to escape unbeaten.

Lyon fright · However, Milan did not arrive at this stage without an almighty fright in their quarter-final against Lyon. They were within two minutes of elimination on away goals when struck for the second time on the night to take his tally to four in this season©s competition. That puts him five behind Shevchenko who tops the UEFA Champions League scoring chart with nine.

Nine meetings · Milan and Barça have played each other nine times - over six ties - with the Italian side edging things with four victories compared to three for the Catalan outfit.

· Their most memorable meeting came in the 1993/94 final, which produced the largest winning margin of the 13 UEFA Champions League finales to date. Milan won 4-0 in in a masterly display of attacking football that blew ©s fancied team away.

Magnificent seven? · To further their ambitions of adding a seventh European Champion Clubs© Cup to their trophy cabinet, ©s side will seek inspiration from their home record against Spanish opposition - rather than the statistics for home and away combat, including group fixtures, against teams from that country.

· They show more defeats than wins ± nine to eight in 17 confrontations. In addition, Milan lost to Real Madrid CF in the 1957/58 European Cup final in , a 3-2 defeat after extra time.

· Of 17 home games against visitors from Spain, Milan have won eleven and drawn two with four losses.

· In the 1959 European Cup first round, the first encounter between the clubs, Milan succumbed 2-0 to Barcelona at San Siro. However, they triumphed by 1-0 in their latest meeting in last season©s group stage through Shevchenko©s first-half goal. In the 2000/01 first group stage, the teams produced a 3-3 draw in the same stadium.

Thanks to Ambrosini · In the 2004/05 semi-final against PSV Eindhoven, Milan were also at home in the first leg, gaining a 2-0 lead through Shevchenko and . However, the away game was nowhere near as comfortable and it required an added-time goal from to take them through on away goals after the Dutch hosts won 3-1.

Penalty heartbreak · In the final in , Milan went 3-0 up against Liverpool FC only to suffer heartbreak as the English side staged an incredible comeback and eventually prevailed on penalties.

Assured progress · Barcelona©s progress to this stage was more assured ± following a 0-0 draw at SL Benfica in the quarter-final first leg with a 2-0 success at , their goals coming in either half from - the competition©s second-top scorer with seven - and Samuel Eto©o. But there were frustrations along the way with a host of spurned opportunities in Lisbon and a missed early penalty by Ronaldinho in the home match.

No wins · Aside from their victory on their first visit, Barcelona have not won in four subsequent trips to San Siro, losing twice with the other two games - one of them against FC Internazionale Milano - ending all-square.

· It is a record that runs on similar lines to their overall record in Italy with the majority of the 13 fixtures ending without a Barça victory after five draws and four defeats.

Home recovery · However, a close look at Barcelona©s record in home-and-away games, including group stages, against Italian opposition shows they often recover ground with an impressive home display.

· In 13 home-and-away ties, the Catalan club have emerged with a favourable outcome on eight occasions. Of those 13 home matches, only two have been lost, one of them to Milan, a 2-0 reverse in the 2000/01 first group stage.

Last year©s revenge · They beat the same opponents 2-1 at home in last term©s group stage, with Eto©o levelling matters after Shevchenko had put the visitors ahead. Ronaldinho then registered the winner with a minute remaining.

Super Cup clash · The teams, both competing in their tenth UEFA Champions League campaign, also faced off in the 1989 UEFA Super Cup with Milan prevailing thanks to a 1-0 victory at San Siro following a 1-1 draw in Spain.

Unbeaten runs · After three successive away defeats in last season©s tournament, ©s side have stayed unbeaten on their travels with three wins and two draws. They have conceded just a single goal in those five outings and that was an own goal.

· Confidence for the return leg on 26 April will come from their unbeaten run at Camp Nou. Following their home loss to Juventus in the quarter-final second leg in 2002/03, they have gone undefeated in nine matches there, winning seven and drawing two.

· Against visitors from Italy, Barça have suffered two defeats with eight victories and three draws.

Successive wins · Milan©s 2-0 triumph at Camp Nou in 2000/01 was one of three wins in Spain which arrived in succession in the space of three seasons. They have lost three of their last four visits with the other game finishing as a draw.

Fourth semi-final · It is Barcelona©s fourth UEFA Champions League semi-final and their first since 2001/02 when they bowed out 3-1 on aggregate to Real Madrid CF.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF tied Manchester United FC©s record of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United©s streak came to an end this season, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. Regarding other teams in this season©s knockout phase, both AC Milan and Juventus have qualified for the last four knockout stages, one ahead of Arsenal FC, FC Bayern München, Chelsea FC and Olympique Lyonnais.

Last eight: Milan have advanced to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League in each of the past four seasons, winning the 2002/03 final against Juventus but losing the 2004/05 showpiece to Liverpool FC. Both finals went to penalty shoot-outs. Milan were eliminated at the quarter-final stage in the 2003/04 season by RC Deportivo La Coruña. Lyon are making their third consecutive trip to the quarter-final stage, but on the previous two occasions the French side have ended on the losing side: in 2003/04 to eventual competition winners FC Porto and then in 2004/05 to PSV Eindhoven.

Semi-finals: Semi-final opponents Arsenal and Villarreal CF are appearing in the last four of the competition for the first time in their history. Barça have qualified for the UEFA Champions League semis on three occasions, their only success coming in the 1993/94 season when defeating Porto 3-0. The Catalan side then faced Milan in the final, only to lose 4-0. Carlo Ancelotti Date of birth: 10 June 1959 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Parma FC, AS Roma, AC Milan Coaching career: AC Reggiana, Parma FC, Juventus, AC Milan

One of only four people ± the others being Miguel Muñoz, Giovanni Trapattoni and Johan Cruyff ± to have lifted the European Champion Clubs© Cup as both a player and coach, Carlo Ancelotti is one of the most highly-regarded young coaches in European football. He claimed the UEFA Champions League in 2003 in only his second season at the AC Milan helm (and would have added another were it not for Liverpool FC©s stunning fightback in Istanbul), and has added Serie A and medals to an individual trophy cabinet teeming with honours.

His coaching career is promising to become every bit as illustrious as his days as a no-nonsense midfielder. Ancelotti started out at AS Roma, winning the Scudetto in 1983, before moving to Milan three years later after his hometown club deemed him too injury-prone. He quickly went about proving them wrong, thriving at the San Siro in five years of unyielding success which brought two more Serie A crowns and back-to-back European Cup wins in 1989 and 1990.

He started his coaching career in similar vein, leading AC Reggiana to promotion in his debut season in 1996. His success attracted the attention of Parma FC, whose decision to bring him to the Ennio Tardini was duly rewarded with an unprecedented second-placed finish. By 1998 he was at Juventus and although he never managed to better runners-up spot, Ancelotti did earn a return to the San Siro. In March 2006, he extended his contract until summer 2008.

Frank Rijkaard Date of birth: 30 September 1962 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: AFC Ajax (twice), Sporting Clube de Portugal, Real Zaragoza, AC Milan Coaching career: Netherlands, Sparta Rotterdam, FC Barcelona

If Frank Rijkaard©s second season at FC Barcelona was anything to go by ± a Spanish title and some memorable performances in the UEFA Champions League ± there is no reason why he cannot steer one of Europe©s grandest clubs to even greater glory.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that his mentor as a youngster was Johan Cruyff. The Dutch legend groomed Rijkaard at AFC Ajax in 1979 where the defender progressed so quickly that he was pulling on the Netherlands shirt aged just 19. In 1987, Rijkaard left the Amsterdam club and had brief spells in Portugal and Spain before committing the key years of his career to AC Milan with whom he twice won the European Champion Clubs© Cup. Highly versatile, Rijkaard played in midfield for Milan but in central defence for his country as they lifted the 1988 UEFA European Championship.

He returned to Ajax in 1993 and helped them, ironically, defeat Milan in the 1995 UEFA Champions League final in Vienna. When he eventually hung up his boots, heads turned as Rijkaard was appointed coach of his country before UEFA EURO 2000™. A semi-final place followed but Rijkaard left his post to pursue a career in club management. His first stint ended poorly, as he resigned from Sparta Rotterdam in May 2002 when they were relegated from the Dutch Eredivisie for the first time, although Barça were not put off and have since seen their faith repaid handsomely.

Referee

Name Nat. DoB UCL UEFA Alain Sars FRA 30.04.1961 25 52

Alain Sars is another of an excellent generation of French referees who have reached the highest UEFA levels.

Sars, based in Brin sur Seille in eastern France, began refereeing at a young age and consistent domestic displays earned him his international badge from FIFA in 1993, when he was still in his early 30s. After making his bow in European youth and women©s tournaments, Sars made his club competition debut with a UEFA Cup game between Linfield FC and Odense BK in September 1994. Having refereed UEFA EURO 96™ qualifiers, he was a fourth official in England.

Big-match assignments in all of UEFA's competitions and the FIFA World Cup continued to come Sars' way, and in May 2001, he was fourth official for the memorable UEFA Cup final between Liverpool FC and Déportivo Alavés, which was refereed by his compatriot Gilles Veissière.

In 2004/05 Sars took charge of seven UEFA Champions League matches, including the semi-final first leg between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC, and three FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, followed the next October by the crucial Czech Republic v Netherlands meeting. In the 2005/06 campaign, he has been a regular fixture again in Europe©s premier club competition including the quarter-final first leg between FC Internazionale Milano and Villarreal CF.

Domestic news

AC Milan and FC Barcelona warmed up for Tuesday night©s San Siro showdown with 1-0 home wins apiece against FC Internazionale Milano and Villarreal CF respectively on Friday. Both teams had brought their matches forward to allow as much preparation time as possible before their semi-final first leg.

AC Milan 1-0 FC Internazionale Milano

Milan moved five points clear of rivals Inter and kept up the pressure on Serie A leaders Juventus with their 103rd derby victory. The game was well balanced but the Rossoneri took the three points thanks to a solitary effort from Georgia defender Kakha Kaladze with 20 minutes remaining. The decisive goal came when Clarence Seedorf©s cross took the Inter defence by surprise and Kaladze controlled the ball with his chest and shot past goalkeeper Júlio César.

Carlo Ancelotti had a fully-fit squad at his disposal, with the exception of Filippo Inzaghi (flu) and Jaap Stam (thigh) but both should be fit for midweek. The coach employed his classic 4-3-1-2 style, with Cafu continuing his return at right-back. "We did not start well," said an otherwise delighted Ancelotti. "We were a bit slow at the beginning and we were not able to control the game as we wished. Inter didn©t allow us any space but we managed to produce something. We made some mistakes but then Inter are a really good team."

It was Kaladze©s second league goal of the season and a vital one after Andriy Shevchenko and Alberto Gilardino had failed to find the breakthrough. "I am really happy because this was an key game," he said. "It was important to win because we can now focus on Barcelona. We are improving a lot. We have great consistency, particularly in defence, and must continue on this way because this is the decisive moment of the season."

FC Barcelona 1-0 Villarreal CF

Samuel Eto©o scored the only goal of the game as Barcelona defeated their fellow UEFA Champions League semi-finalists without Ronaldinho and moved a step closer to retaining the league title. The Cameroon international turned away from Juan Manuel Peña in the eleventh minute and steered the ball inside Mariano Barbosa©s near post to earn Barça maximum points in their last outing before the trip to Italy.

Coach Frank Rijkaard chose to leave Ronaldinho out of the squad for the second consecutive match as the Brazilian looks to regain full fitness after pulling his right thigh muscle, but there were concerns when Henrik Larsson (thigh) and then Santiago Ezquerro (knee) limped out of the action. Edmílson came through his first full 90 minutes since recovering from a hamstring injury, but due to the enforced changes Rafael Márquez was unable to make his first appearance after shaking off a torn thigh muscle. Thiago Motta (groin) was still missing, while Xavi Hernández is two weeks away from full fitness after five months out. Lionel Messi (thigh) has flown to Argentina to continue his recovery.

Rijkaard admitted the early injuries to Larsson and Ezquerro had affected his game plan as Márquez was unable to make an appearance as a substitute, but he was pleased with the fringe players that came in. "We did not see him [Márquez], but that was mainly because of the changes we had to make," he said. "The substitutions did effect the development of our game a little and our rhythm." The Barça coach was pleased with the win though, adding: "These are three important points and now we can focus on Milan. In recent games we have not been able to name the team that we would like."

General competition information

UEFA©s most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs© Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

· Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

· Deadlines: UEFA Champions League press kits are provided to media by uefa.com. For every UEFA Champions League match, two press kits are issued in English: Sunday at 22:00CET with a match preview update on Monday at 22:00CET for Tuesday©s matches. For Wednesday©s matches, the press kit is issued on Monday at 22:00CET with the match preview update version published on Tuesday at 22:00CET. Multilingual versions of press kits, determined on a match-by-match basis, are also issued with similar deadlines.

Accreditations can be requested via uefa.com for the UEFA Champions League final at the Stade de France in Paris on 17 May. To cover the event, representatives of the written press, photographers, radio stations and websites, along with non-rights holding television stations, must apply directly to UEFA via the online accreditation system on uefa.com. In order to serve the media in the best possible way, UEFA has set a deadline of 28 April - two days after the second semi-final has been decided.

On a similar theme, media representatives have until 12 May to apply for accreditation for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, which will take place in Portugal from 23 May to 4 June. The host nation will compete in Group A alongside France - who could boast Arsenal FC duo and Abou Diaby - Germany, and Serbia and Montenegro, while the holders Italy tackle Denmark, Netherlands and Ukraine in the other pool. Any interested media representatives should apply directly to UEFA, and can do so via the online accreditation service available on uefa.com.

Application for media accreditation to cover the UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals in Luxembourg from 3-14 May is also open until 26 April. Apply via email to [email protected] with subject header U-17. Among the eight finalists are traditional junior powerhouses Spain, who have four players apiece from FC Barcelona and Villarreal CF in their initial squad of 30 players.

Finally, having lifted five European Champion Clubs© Cups between them at AC Milan, and seven in total, Giovanni Trapattoni, and Dejan Savićević received UEFA awards recognising their contribution to the competition before the Rossoneri©s quarter-final second-leg match against Olympique Lyonnais at San Siro. UEFA is celebrating 50 years of European Cup football throughout this season, awarding specially-designed plaques to players and coaches who have graced the tournament as ©Champions of Europe©.
