CFP v Rosenborg BK

Georgios Karaiskakis - Tuesday, 13 September 2005 - 20:45 (CET) Group stage - Group F - Matchday 1

Match officials Referee Stefano Farina (ITA) Assistant referees Andrea Consolo (ITA), Massimo Biasutto (ITA) Fourth official Enrico Rocchi (ITA) UEFA delegate Barry Taylor (ENG) Match preview Olympiacos set greater goals Having gone tantalisingly close to reaching the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League last season, Olympiacos CFP hope to "show their true colours" this term and progress from the group stage for only the second time in ten attempts.

'Early goal' The Greek champions begin their Group F campaign at home to Rosenborg BK on Tuesday with coach calling on his side to make an early impression ahead of likely tougher tests against Real CF and . "There are 18 points up for grabs in the group and we must take as many as we can from each match," said Sollied, a former Rosenborg coach and player whose last experience of Champions League football was at the helm of Club Brugge KV. "If we can get an early goal [on Tuesday] it will certainly boost our chances."

False dawns Olympiacos are well used to false dawns in , although they were unlucky not to advance with their tally of ten points in Group A last season. At half-time on Matchday 6 they led Liverpool FC 1-0, and were still on course for the first knockout round at 2-1 down with four minutes to play when struck a stunning winner to propel the English team towards the next stage (and eventual glory) and the outfit into the UEFA Cup. Olympiacos captain Predrag Djordjević does not envisage such heartbreak this winter, saying: "We're in good shape and want to make a difference this season. We still haven't shown our true colours in this competition."

'Nothing to lose' Sollied, who hails from , believes his knowledge of Rosenborg will be counterbalanced by the visitors' superior matchfitness. "It's an advantage that I know Rosenborg, but we're still at the beginning of our campaign while they're already well into theirs," he said. Djordjević, aware that Rosenborg lie tenth in their 14 team Premier Division, added: "They've got nothing to lose and that makes them very dangerous. A good result for them could trigger a recovery in their season."

Unlucky Kafes? Olympiacos are likely to recall Ivory Coast Yaya Touré and playmaker after they were rested at the weekend, meaning Pantelis Kafes could drop to the bench despite a manofthematch performance in Saturday's 50 defeat of Panionios NFC. New signing Mihalis Kapsis remains an injury doubt, so Ioannis Taralidis could partner Athanasios Kostoulas in the centre of a fourman defence. In attack, Sollied must decide whether Cyprus forward Ioannis Okkas or Nigerian Haruna Babangida deserves a starting spot alongside Mihalis Konstantinou, another Cypriot.

'Great players' Whoever starts, Rosenborg coach PerMathias Høgmo knows both Sollied and Olympiacos well enough to anticipate a difficult game in prospect. "Sollied has already left his mark," said the 45yearold, who replaced at the helm of the based club last month. "Compared to Panathinaikos, who we played last season, Olympiacos are better organised and stronger in attack and defence. They have great players like Rivaldo, but above all they are tight team. They are at the same level as [Real] Madrid [CF} and [Olympique] Lyon[nais], not below them."

Previous meetings Høgmo will hope firstchoice goalkeeper Espen Johnsen recovers from a knee complaint to take his place

between the posts, having already lost defenders and to injuries. He said of his side's chances: "We've been playing well but just haven't been able to score hopefully we can do that on Tuesday. We expect them to start quickly, but we are well prepared." The teams last met in the Champions League in 1997/98, with a 22 draw in Athens following a 51 home success in Trondheim scores Høgmo would love to see replicated.

Match background Olympiacos start with Rosenborg Two teams whose UEFA Champions League pedigree makes them among the most experienced participants in the event, meet in Group F on Matchday 1. Olympiacos CFP will be taking part in their ninth Champions League campaign and their 51st match in the competition, while Rosenborg BK embark on their tenth season and play their 63rd game. Both clubs were eliminated after the group stage last term, and will be looking for an improved showing this time around.

The sides have been drawn together in one previous Champions League campaign, in Group D of the 1997/98 competition. On Matchday 2 they met in Norway, with Rosenborg recording a resounding 51 win. Rosenborg then drew 22 in , but their group tally of eleven points was not enough to see them through.

Roar Strand, still in the Rosenborg squad, was one of the stars of the 51 victory with two firsthalf goals, while registered twice with strike partner also on target. Peter Oforiquaye, aged 17, became the competition's youngest scorer with Olympiacos's consolation.

Rushfeldt added two more goals on Matchday 6 in Piraeus, but current Olympiacos cocaptains Dimitrios Mavrogenidis and Predrag Djordjević replied for the hosts. Djordjević equalised on 88 minutes to prevent Rosenborg taking three points and reaching the quarterfinals.

Olympiacos have played one other Norwegian side in UEFA competition, being paired with Molde FK in Group E of the 1999/00 Champions League. Olympiacos won the home game 31 on Matchday 3, with two goals from Giovanni and another from Luciano, but Molde recovered on the next Matchday to claim a 32 victory and their only group success. Both teams were eliminated.

In their other ties against Greek opposition, Rosenborg have twice encountered Olympiacos's great rivals Panathinaikos FC. In 1996/97 they eliminated the Athens club 31 on aggregate after extra time in the preliminary round, to enter the Champions League group stage.

Last season Rosenborg renewed acquaintances with Panathinaikos in Group E. The latter won 21 on home soil, before Rosenborg dealt a blow to Greek chances of progress with a 22 draw at Lerkendal. In the event, 's two secondhalf goals saw Arsenal FC and PSV Eindhoven into the knockout rounds instead.

Domestic News Form guide points to home wins (Saturday, 10 September 2005) While the two teams beginning their UEFA Champions League Group F campaigns at home - Olympique Lyonnais and Olympiacos CFP - were in fine form on Saturday, their respective Tuesday visitors Real Madrid CF and Rosenborg BK suffered demoralising defeats.

Olympique Lyonnais 2-1 AS Monaco FC

Olympique Lyonnais will start their sixth consecutive Champions League campaign from the familiar position of first in thanks to their victory against Monaco. New Brazilian signing Fred made a real impact in his first match in Europe, the former Cruzeiro EC player scoring at the start of each half. Monaco midfielder Olivier Kapo was shown a second yellow card in the 57th minute and Lyon proved dominant except when David Gigliotti reduced their lead ten minutes from time with a deflected free-kick.

Lyon, French champions four years running, now have five wins and a draw from their opening six league games, their best start for five seasons. Coach Gérard Houllier said: "It was an important victory against contenders for our crown who are now nine points behind."

Cris is Houllier's only injury concern after he left the pitch against Monaco with a suspected bruised knee ligament, with a scan to follow on Monday. Houllier added of Madrid: "The absence of [Zinedine] Zidane and Ronaldo is not totally good news as their team will be balanced more towards defence, especially away from home."

Real Madrid CF 2-3 RC Celta de Vigo

Madrid suffered defeat in their opening home game of the season, losing to newly-promoted Celta. Madrid were 1-0 down by the eighth minute when Fernando Baiano's far-post header bounced off the bar for Pedro Contreras to stroke the ball in from close range. The home team were back on level terms on 36 minutes from Ronaldo's penalty following a foul on Julio Baptista.

Baptista put Madrid in front on the cusp of half-time, heading in Iván Helguera's sweeping centre, but within seconds, Celta had levelled as a direct result of Francisco Pavón's . , playing his 200th game, brilliantly kept out Néstor Cannobio's penalty but the ball landed sweetly for Antonio Núñez to head in against his former club. Celta struck an unusual winner on 76 minutes when Cannobio's fierce strike ricocheted off the bar and, according to the assistant referee, over the line.

Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo said: "Losing this game hurts but looking at it positively, it has been a lesson that we should learn from. We did not play well, conceded an early goal and following that, the situation did not develop as we had anticipated. It's not been a good week for us and perhaps the absence of players for international duty has contributed."

Luxemburgo, who is missing Ronaldo on Tuesday due to suspension, was without Zidane, out for three weeks recovering from a groin strain suffered for France against the Republic of Ireland. The Madrid coach deployed in his place while new signing Robinho started, confining Raúl González, who has a back problem, to the bench. Latest signing Sergio Ramos made an appearance at the start of the second half, replacing Pavón, who injured his toe, in central defence while was forced out of the match on 80 minutes after taking a knock to his right knee.

Raúl, who is one goal short of 50 in the Champions League, scored for Spain in the 1-1 draw with Serbia and Montenegro in midweek, with Míchel Salgado and Casillas also figuring but Ramos omitted. While Beckham might have been ruing England's 1-0 defeat by Northern Ireland, Thomas Gravesen was celebrating as Denmark overcame Georgia 6-1.

Olympiacos CFP 5-0 Panionios NFC

Olympiacos cruised to victory against Panionios, their eleventh home win in a row against that opposition. Panionios have not won so much as a friendly since July, and the reigning champions went ahead through man

of the match Pantelis Kafes in the 24th minute from close range. The midfield player was to set up the remaining four goals, starting just after the break when his cross from the right was headed in by Ieroklis Stoltidis.

Eight minutes later, Kafes found Athanassios Kostoulas, whose header made it 3-0. In the 58th minute, Kafes laid the ball into the path of Ioannis Taralidis to score with a powerful shot. Eight minutes later, Kafes's effort found its way to Haruna Babangida, who completed the scoring in front of an empty Karaiskaki stadium, Olympiacos in the penultimate game of a stadium ban due to crowd trouble last season. They have won both their games this season, having previously defeated Panathinaikos FC 2-0.

Home coach Trond Sollied decided to rest Rivaldo to ensure he recovers from a groin injury in time to face Rosenborg, and Yaya Touré, who arrived late on Thursday from international duty with the Ivory Coast, and missed several training sessions. Rivaldo's absence allowed Kafes to start, as he is not usually a part of the Norwegian coach's 4-3-3 scheme. Mihalis Kapsis complained of pain in his left thigh muscle and was sidelined as a precaution, allowing Taralidis to step in.

Viking FK 3-2 Rosenborg BK

Rosenborg remained in relegation trouble in the Norwegian after letting slip a two-goal lead against Viking FK to lose 3-2. Two Thorstein Helstad strikes in the first 35 minutes seemed to have secured Rosenborg's first league points in five matches, but Egil Østenstad swiftly pulled one back almost immediately and, Allan Gaarde and Toni Nhleko turned the game in the final ten minutes.

"We tired at the end, and Viking took advantage of that," said Rosenborg coach Per-Mathias Høgmo, whose club's struggles are in stark contrast to their run of 13 straight championships which has ended with a dramatic bump.

At Olympiacos, Rosenborg are expected to be without defenders Christer Basma, Robbie Russell and Miika Koppinen through injury. Goalkeeper Espen Johnsen is also a doubt with a knee problem. He was on the bench against Viking.

Competition overview Competition Overview How the UEFA Champions League works…

The UEFA Champions League is UEFA's most prestigious club competition. It was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its format and name were changed in 1992.

Real Madrid CF have been the most successful side in the UEFA Champions League, winning the competition three times. They are also the most successful side overall with nine triumphs, followed by six for AC Milan and five for current champions Liverpool FC.

The Champions League is open to each national association's domestic champions, as well as clubs who finish just behind them in their respective domestic championship. The number of clubs that can be entered by an association and their entry point in the competition depends on the association’s position in UEFA's coefficient ranking list.

Since its inception in 1992/93, the Champions League has continued to evolve, maintaining a mixture of round- robin group matches as well as its traditional knockout format. The current format was introduced in 2003/04. After three qualifying rounds, 32 teams contest the group stage, divided into eight groups of four. The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stage, the eight third-placed teams move into the UEFA Cup third round, and the eight fourth-placed teams are eliminated.

A draw determines who each of the 16 clubs will play in the first knockout stage, with ties decided over two matches on a home and away basis. The club that scores the greater aggregate of goals advances, or in the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more away goals.

If the away-goals rule proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (ie the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks. The two teams that advance from the knockout round contest the final, held as a single match in May.

The European Champion Clubs' Cup was a purely knockout competition until the format was changed in 1992/93 with the inception of the Champions League. That year the competition began with three knockout rounds with the winners advancing to a group stage involving two sets of four clubs playing home and away. The two group winners contested the final. A similar format was used the following season, with the addition of a two-legged semi-final stage involving the top two clubs from both groups.

The competition expanded further for the 1994/95 season with one preliminary round required before the clubs divided into four groups of four clubs. The top two clubs in each group advanced to the knockout stage, which this time began at the quarter-final stage. The 1997/98 season saw another phase of expansion. Two qualifying rounds were introduced and the group stage expanded to six groups of four clubs each. The six group winners and the two best runners-up advanced to the knockout stages.

An additional qualifying round was introduced for the 1999/2000 season to generate two group stages, firstly with 32 teams - eight groups of four - who played six matches apiece to reduce the competition to 16 teams for the second group stage, with the eight third-placed teams moving to the UEFA Cup third round. At the end of the second group stage, eight teams remained to contest the knockout stage.

Notices Out-of-competition tests welcomed Clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League this season have reacted positively to UEFA's decision to introduce out-of-competition doping controls.

Full details The 32 sides setting out in the group stage of European club football's most prestigious tournament later this month have been supplied with full details of the out-of-competition programme and have been appraised of how they will be expected to co-operate in its implementation.

Weekly whereabouts All players registered for the Champions League will become part of the 2005/06 UEFA Out-of-Competition Pool. The players will remain in this pool until their team is eliminated. Clubs will also provide UEFA with weekly reports of the whereabouts of their players.

UEFA DCOs Under the out-of-competition procedure, UEFA Doping Control Officers (DCOs) will be responsible for collecting samples, and will come unannounced to a location designated by the club. Up to ten players can be tested. UEFA's anti-doping panel may decide to nominate the players to be tested, or instruct the DCO to conduct a draw.

Reporting regulations Drawn players who are not present will have 60 minutes to report to the doping control location – should a player drawn for testing not report to the doping control location, the DCO will submit a missed test report to UEFA.

Information system "Out-of-competition testing is part of the requirements from the World Anti-Doping Code," said Marc Vouillamoz, head of the UEFA anti-doping unit. "We have put in place a whereabouts information system which can be implemented at team level. The launch of the out-of-competition testing programme will increase the deterrence factor."

Club sessions Clubs are being asked to organise information sessions for all players concerned to advise them of their responsibilities, and each player is being briefed about UEFA's out-of-competition testing directives.

Anti-doping activities The move is part of UEFA's reinforcement of its anti-doping activities, which has seen an increase in the number of drugs tests in its tournaments, greater financial outlay in the sector, the creation of an anti-doping unit within the UEFA administration, as well as an expert anti-doping panel and an education programme aimed at the broad spectrum of the European football community.

Anti-doping programme Associations and clubs taking part in UEFA competitions are being asked to assist UEFA in implementing the anti-doping scheme. Under UEFA's new anti-doping regulations, which came into force on 1 June, these doping controls may include blood and/or urine samples.
