Match background

Turkey are just one step away from reaching their first UEFA European Championship final but they will find a formidable obstacle blocking their path at St. Jakob-Park in Basel in the shape of Joachim Löw's Germany. • While the last four is previously uncharted territory for Turkey, the same certainly cannot be said of three-times European champions Germany who have won four of their five previous semi-finals in the competition. Yet if Turkey are underdogs, nobody will be underestimating 's side who have captured the imagination at UEFA EURO 2008™ with their ever more miraculous comebacks. • After losing their opening game 2-0 to , Turkey revived their hopes by coming from behind to defeat co-hosts , Semih Şentürk cancelling out a first-half goal before snatched all three points two minutes into added time. • If that was dramatic, Terim's team raised the bar even higher in their last Group A match as they fought back from two behind against the Czech Republic. Trailing to strikes from and Jaroslav Plašil, they halved the deficit through Arda's 75th-minute goal before 's quick-fire double on 87 and 89 minutes turned the game on its head. • Turkey put their supporters' nerves through the shredder a third time in their quarter-final against . With the game goalless deep into extra time, Turkey fell behind in the 119th minute through an Ivan Klasnić header. Incredibly, they found an equaliser with the last kick of the match from Semih and duly prevailed 3-1 on penalties. Arda, Semih and Hamit Altıntop all converted their kicks before Rüştü Reçber saved from Mladen Petrić to put Turkey in the semi-finals. • Germany began their campaign in Group B by defeating 2-0 through two goals from but they then suffered a hiccup when losing 2-1 to Croatia, Podolski's 79th-minute effort scant consolation after and Ivica Olić had struck for the opposition. • Löw's men recovered sufficient composure to defeat co-hosts 1-0 in , through 's stunning second-half free-kick, and claim second place in the section and they then raised to game to eliminate Portugal in the quarter-finals. Germany raced into a 2-0 lead in Basel through goals from and and although pulled one back, Ballack's headed third ensured a German victory despite Hélder Postiga's late reply for Portugal. • Germany can now look forward to their first EURO semi-final since 1996 when they defeated England on penalties en route to winning the European crown.

• The rundown of the Mannschaft's semi-finals on the European stage is: 1972 W 2-1 1976 Yugoslavia W 4-2 (aet) 1988 L 1-2 1992 W 3-2 1996 England W 1-1 (aet, 6-5 on pens) • Since that EURO '96™ semi-final, Germany have contested two FIFA World Cup semi-finals, beating Korea Republic through a Ballack goal in Seoul in 2002 but losing 2-0 to Italy in Dortmund two summers ago. • This is only the second semi-final appearance for Turkey in a major tournament, the first having come at the 2002 World Cup when Şenol Güneş's team lost 1-0 to Brazil in Saitama. There are two survivors of the side that played that night in the present squad: goalkeeper Rüştü and Emre Belözoglu. Defender Emre Aşık and injured forward Nihat were unused substitutes. • Turkey will hope to do better than the last time they faced Germany on Swiss soil – and suffered two defeats at a cost of eleven goals conceded at the 1954 World Cup. • The teams met in their opening game of the group stage with winning 4-1 in Berne. After both recorded a victory and a defeat – the Germans losing their second game 8-3 to , Turkey beating Korea Republic 7-0 – they contested a play-off to decide who would progress as the second-placed team behind the Hungarians. • West Germany made no mistake, the eventual champions inflicting a 7-2 defeat on Turkey in Zurich as Max Morlock (3), Hans Schäfer (2) and Fritz and Ottmar Walter all found the net. • Germany have held the upper hand in meetings down the years, recording eleven wins to Turkey's three with three games drawn. • Yet Turkey have won two and drawn one of the three most recent encounters, including a 2-1 success when the teams last met in a friendly in in October 2005. Halil Altıntop opened the scoring after 25 minutes before the sides traded late goals, debutant Nuri Sahin doubling the lead in the 89th minute before narrowed the arrears 60 seconds later. • The teams for that game were: Turkey: , Hamit Altıntop, Alpay Özalan, İbrahim Toraman, Ümit Özat (İbrahim Akın 79), Selçuk Şahin (Nuri Şahin 86), Hüseyin Çimşir, Yıldıray Baştürk (Ergün Penbe 46), Tümer Metin (Necati Ateş 67), Halil Altıntop (Serkan Balcı 46), Nihat Kahveci (Serhat Akın 84). Germany: , , , Lukas Sinkiewicz, , Bernd Schneider, ( 46), ( 73), Bastian Schweinsteiger ( 82), Lukas Podolski, Kevin Kuranyi (Oliver Neuville 46). • Turkey also took four points off Germany in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2000™. Oliver Kahn's own goal gave them a 1-0 win in Bursa in October 1998 and 12 months later they earned a goalless draw in Munich. • Germany's last victory against Turkey was in May 1992 when Rudi Völler registered the only goal in a friendly in Gelsenkirchen. • Germany coach Löw had spells coaching in Turkish football with Fenerbahçe SK (1998/99) and Adanaspor AS (2000/01). During his year with Fenerbahçe, he counted Turkey goalkeeper Rüştü among his players and, moreover, twice faced off against Turkey coach Terim in Istanbul derbies. Terim's Galatasaray AS had the better of those matches, drawing 2-2 at Fenerbahçe before winning their home fixture 2-0. • Terim oversaw a 2-0 aggregate win against BV during Galatasaray's triumphant UEFA Cup run of 1999/00 – the first ever continental triumph by a Turkish club side. Emre Belözoglu was in the Galatasaray team that won 2-0 in Germany to come out on top in a fourth-round tie while was on the beaten team that night. • Although Terim's Galatasaray won the 2000 UEFA Cup final on penalties, the Turkey national team had never contested a penalty shoot-out before last Friday’s quarter-final in Vienna.

Head coach Germany: Joachim Löw Date of birth: 3 February 1960 Nationality: German Playing career: SC Freiburg (three times), VfB Stuttgart, , Karlsruher SC, FC Schaffhausen, FC Winterthur, FC Frauenfeld Coaching career: FC Winterthur (youth coach), FC Frauenfeld, VfB Stuttgart, Fenerbahçe SK, Karlsruher SC, Adanaspor AS, FC Wacker Tirol, FK Austria Wien, Germany (assistant), Germany Not many eyebrows were raised when Joachim Löw stepped up from his position as Germany assistant coach to take centre stage after Jürgen Klinsmann stood down after the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The former midfielder had heavily influenced tactics and lineups, and was a major force behind Germany's attacking approach, with Klinsmann saying: "He has always been much more than an assistant coach to me." The Schonau-born Löw proved that he was the right man for the job in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying, with Germany the first nation apart from the two co-hosts to book a place in the finals. Löw was promptly handed an extension to his original two-year contract, which takes him through until 2010, and German Football Association president Theo Zwanziger declared the move "a clear signal that we are heading towards UEFA EURO 2008™ and the 2010 World Cup with confidence in his philosophy". Affectionately known as Jogi, Löw is widely regarded for his innovative training methods and his pride in seeing young players fulfil their potential. Löw played for VfB Stuttgart, SC Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt. He hung up his boots in summer 1995, but had already been coaching part-time at Swiss side FC Winterthur. He took the reins at Stuttgart in July 1995 and guided them to the 1996/97 German Cup, and the final of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in the following season where they lost 1-0 to Chelsea FC. He then won the Austrian championship with FC Wacker Tiro, then known as FC Tirol , in 2001/02 before a spell at FK Austria Wien. He also had stints in Turkey at Fenerbahçe SK and Adanaspor AS.

Turkey: Fatih Terim Date of birth: 4 September 1953 Nationality: Turkish Playing career: , Galatasaray AS Coaching career: MKE Ankaragücü, Göztepe AŞ, Turkey Under-21, Turkey, Galatasaray AS (twice), ACF Fiorentina, AC , Turkey Fatih Terim ensured Turkey did not fail to qualify for a third successive tournament, and he is determined to make a big impression. "Had we missed our chance, someone would have had to take responsibility and I would have done so," he said. "But now we are through and I made a promise we would qualify and make a significant contribution at the finals." Appointed as Turkey coach in 2005 following a break from management, Terim – known as 'Imparator' ('The Emperor') in his home country for his leadership skills – could not guide Turkey through a 2006 FIFA World Cup play-off against Switzerland which ended fractiously in Istanbul. He had previously been appointed as Turkey coach in 1993 and led them to the finals of EURO '96™. They lost all of their games in England, but just getting there was a major landmark as Turkey's first finals appearance since the 1954 FIFA World Cup. It was an achievement that epitomised Terim's belief that professional discipline and raw passion lie at the heart of any great team. A central defender in his youth, he played for Galatasaray AS for over a decade and represented Turkey 51 times, 31 of them as captain. Jobs at MKE Ankaragücü and Göztepe followed before he was named assistant to national team coach Sepp Piontek and put in charge of the Under-21 side in 1991. After EURO '96™ he returned to Galatasaray, winning four league titles and the 1999/00 UEFA Cup. Serie A came calling and Terim took charge of ACF Fiorentina and AC Milan before returning to Galatasaray but problems behind the scenes brought about a temporary retirement in 2004.

Name Nat. Date of birth Massimo Busacca SUI 06.02.1969

Massimo Busacca has steadily enhanced his reputation since succeeding on Switzerland's élite list, with the 2007 UEFA Cup final following the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He had three games in Germany, including Argentina’s 2-1 last-16 win against Mexico. The UEFA Cup final Sevilla FC won 3-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw against RCD Espanyol was his third visit to as he also refereed 's 1-0 victory against France in a UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifier and ended the 2007/08 club season by taking charge of the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg between FC and eventual winners Manchester United FC. Another high-level game for Busacca, who enjoys travel in his spare time, was the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup semi-final between Brazil and Argentina in Utrecht. Competition facts

UEFA European Championship: Did you know? • Only three sides have ever won the UEFA European Championship on home soil: Spain (1964), Italy (1968) and France (1984). • No side has ever retained the trophy, and no player has appeared in two victorious finals. • A total of 26 matches in the final tournament – including five finals – have gone to extra time, with 13 decided by a penalty shoot-out, including the third-placed match between Czechslovakia and Italy at the 1980 finals when no extra time was played. • There have been 22 semi-finals in UEFA European Championship history and on only three occasions – France v Portugal (2000), Netherlands v West Germany (1988) and West Germany v Yugoslavia (1976) – have a side recovered after conceding the first goal to win without penalties. West Germany came from 2-0 down against Yugoslavia, the only time this has been achieved. In addition, Germany came from behind to draw 1-1 with England in the 1996 semi-finals and subsequently prevailed on penalties, while Spain did likewise against in 1984. • To date, 13 teams have held an interval lead in a EURO semi-final, of which eight have gone on to record victory, two have drawn while three have ended up on the losing side. Of those drawn games, Denmark – who had been leading 2-1 at the interval – beat the Netherlands 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out after their 1992 semi-final had finished 2-2, although the Scandinavian side lost on penalties to Spain in the last four in 1984 having led 1-0 at half-time. • There have been ten goals scored during extra time at the semi-final stage, two in the first half and eight in the second. Dieter Müller is the only player to score twice during extra time in the last four, doing so for West Germany in their 4-2 defeat of Yugoslavia in 1976. • Eleven semi-final ties have required extra time and five of those were ultimately decided by a penalty shoot-out: Netherlands v Italy (2000), England v Germany, France v Czech Republic (both 1996), the Netherlands v Denmark (1992) and Demark v Spain (1984). • 's third-minute goal – timed at two minutes and 14 seconds – for England against Germany in 1996 is the fastest goal scored in a EURO semi-final. • The Soviet Union's 3-0 defeat of Czechoslovakia in the 1960 semi-final remains the biggest margin of victory in a last-four match. In contrast, three ties – Italy v Soviet Union (1968), Czech Republic v France (1996) and the Netherlands v Italy (2000) finished goalless. • The first UEFA European Championship final, between the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia in 1960, was settled in extra time with the former running out 2-1 winners in Paris. Three subsequent finals have also required 30 additional minutes. Italy defeated Yugoslavia in a replay in 1968 after the first game had gone to extra time; Germany overcame the Czech Republic 2-1 with a in 1996 and; four years later France beat Italy by the same scoreline, also with a golden goal, in – the last time extra time was needed in the final. • The 1976 final between Czechoslovakia and West Germany also went to extra time but after a 2-2 draw, a penalty shoot-out was required – the first in UEFA European Championship finals history. Antonín settled the contest, his memorable chip giving the Czechoslovakians a 5-3 victory in what remains the only final shoot-out in the competition. • UEFA EURO 2008™ is Germany's tenth successive UEFA European Championship final tournament, more appearances than any other side – they last missed out as West Germany in 1968. • Having lost to Spain in the quarter-finals, Italy failed in their bid to become only the third team to hold the UEFA European Championship and FIFA World Cup at the same time. West Germany won the European title in 1972 and added the world crown two years later, while France claimed the 1998 World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000™. • Manchester United FC quartet Cristiano Ronaldo, , and were all bidding to join the exclusive band of five players who have appeared in European Champion Clubs' Cup and UEFA European Championship final victories in the same year, but none made it past the quarter-finals. Luis Suárez achieved the feat with FC Internazionale Milano and Spain in 1964, while in 1988 PSV quartet Hans van Breukelen, Ronald Koeman, Barry van Aerle and Gerald Vanenburg were all in the victorious Netherlands side.

UEFA information

Technical Team enjoy EURO drama Members of the UEFA Technical Team have been impressed with what they have seen so far at UEFA EURO 2008™. The Technical Team is made up of nine experienced coaches and technicians who have been split into two groups. The one based in Switzerland comprises Jerzy Engel (Poland), György Mezey (Hungary), Morten Olsen (Denmark) and Holger Osieck (Germany), while Jean-Paul Brigger (Switzerland, FIFA Technical Director), Roy Hodgson (England), Gérard Houllier (France) and Jozef Vengloš (Slovakia) have been attending games in Austria. UEFA Technical Director Andy Roxburgh runs the team's activities. The experts are examining the tactical and technical trends at the tournament, and have enjoyed the fare on offer, highlighting in particular the late goals in matches which have had a bearing on the result. "It's been a very good championship," said Roxburgh on Monday. "We've had some drama – it appears every time Turkey play, we have drama. If you think of Turkey coming back against Switzerland, Czech Republic and Croatia, these were incredibly dramatic games." The Technical Team is using not only this tournament, but also the 2006 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League as its benchmark for assessments. Unite Against Racism The fight to banish racism from football will take centre stage at the UEFA EURO 2008™ semi-finals. At the matches in Basel on Wednesday and Vienna on Thursday, the team captains will deliver a message against racism and in support of diversity directly after the national anthems prior to kick-off. The initiative is part of a series of messages that will include a huge choreography in the stadium involving every spectator. The activities are taking place under the tournament's Unite Against Racism programme. Unite Against Racism is an awareness campaign run by the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network with UEFA's backing, as well as with the support of the professional players' union FIFPro. The project's profile is given an added boost by , a national supporter in both host countries, which has dedicated its pitchside advertising space to the campaign. The Unite Against Racism logo is displayed not only on the perimeter boards in the but also on the captains' armbands, the match tickets, the ball boys and girls' bibs as well as the stewards' bibs and the substitute players' bibs. The campaign also includes an advertising spot broadcast at every game – Different Languages, One Goal: No To Racism. Refereeing appointments Having taken charge of the opening game of UEFA EURO 2008™, Italian referee will also bring the tournament to a close after being appointed for Sunday's final at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna. As well as Switzerland's opening loss to the Czech Republic, the 40-year-old was in the middle for the quarter-final between Turkey and Croatia. He will be accompanied by compatriots and assistants Alessandro Griselli and Paolo Calcagno for the final, with Swedish referee Peter Fröjdfelt acting as fourth official. Switzerland's Massimo Busacca will take charge of the semi-final between Turkey and Germany in Basel on Wednesday, while Belgian has been chosen for Thursday's other last-four meeting between Russia and Spain in Vienna. Rosetti told euro2008.com: "This is a great satisfaction for me; I'm delighted. I would like to share this moment with all Italian referees as well as with those who are close to me. However, this is not only my appointment – it's the appointment of a team together with my assistants Alessandro and Paolo. We're all looking forward to the final with all of its emotion and atmosphere." euro2008.com a hit One success story has already emerged from a memorable UEFA EURO 2008™ – the tournament's official website, euro2008.com, has registered record traffic of more than one billion page views since its launch in February 2008. So far in June, more than 42 million visitors from over 200 countries have logged on to text, multimedia and video coverage of the action. Up to 4.3 million visitors logged on during a single day of the finals, and up to half a million visitors per hour follow live coverage on the web. Traffic numbers are already up by more than 250 per cent compared to euro2004.com. "We have had an extremely good response about everything from those surfing the internet," said Alexandre Fourtoy, CEO of UEFA Media Technologies SA which is UEFA's subsidiary in charge of site production. "We also see a lot of interaction between the fans and ourselves. As our website was made for the fans by the fans, it is really a pleasure to see everyone participating all day long."

Competition information

• Format: If the result stands as a draw at the end of normal playing time, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played. If the two teams are still level after extra time, the winners shall be determined by kicks from the penalty mark. • Key dates: The quarter-finals were played on 19, 20, 21 and 22 June in the following format: Match 1 Winner Group A v Runner-up Group B Match 2 Winner Group B v Runner-up Group A Match 3 Winner Group C v Runner-up Group D Match 4 Winner Group D v Runner-up Group C The semi-finals are played on 25 and 26 June: Winner Match 1 v Winner Match 2 Winner Match 3 v Winner Match 4 The final is played at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna on Sunday 29 June, with the winners of Semi-final 1 being designated as the home team for administrative purposes. • Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in the competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case of repeated cautions, a player is suspended for one match after two cautions in two different matches. In May, UEFA's Executive Committee decided at its meeting in Moscow to cancel single yellow cards after the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2008™. Consequently, a situation will not arise whereby players receive a second yellow card of the tournament in the semi-finals and are suspended for the final as a result. • Player eligibility: The 16 participants in the final tournament had to submit a final list of 23 players – of which three had to be goalkeepers – at least ten days before the opening match of the tournament, on 7 June. In the event of a serious injury to a listed player before his team's first match in the final tournament, the player in question could be substituted only if a doctor from the UEFA Medical Committee and the team doctor both confirmed the injury was serious enough to prevent the player taking part. • Financial information: UEFA has earmarked a total of €184m for the 16 teams competing in UEFA EURO 2008™ compared to €129m at UEFA EURO 2004™. The 16 teams in the final tournament will each receive a participating fee of €7.5m with a performance bonus of €1m for a win during the group stage and €500,000 for a draw. The eight teams who reach the quarter-finals will all receive an additional payment of €2m, with the four teams who progress to the semi-finals collecting an extra €3m. For the teams who take the field for the final at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion on 29 June, the runners-up will receive €4.5m with the winners collecting €7.5m. Therefore, if the victorious side at the final win all three of their group games, they would collect a maximum of €23m. • Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness.
