The cinema, that “dream factory” takes over and employs countless mythical motifs – the fight between hero and monster, initiatory combats and ordeals, paradigmatic figures and images (the maiden, the hero, the paradisiacal landscape, hell and do on). Even reading includes a mythological function, only because it replaces the recitation of myths in archaic societies and the oral literature that still lives in the rural communities of Europe, but particularly because, through reading, the modern man succeeds in obtaining an ‘escape from time’ comparable to the ‘emergence from time’ effected by myths. -

Kosovo Myths: Karadžić, Njegoš, and the Transformation of Serb Memory ALEXANDER GREENAWALT e legend of Serbia’s defeat by invading Ottoman forces at the medieval battle of Kosovo on June , has long occupied a special place in Serbian natio- nal memory. Overcoming historical details that assign the event a more limited significance, the battle has come to symbolize a national death: the cataclys- mic end to the once glorious medieval Serbian state and the beginning of the -year-long Ottoman occupation, a time typically characterized both as an enslavement and as a deep national sleep. But the story also has a generative side. As Alex Dragnich and Slavko Todorovich explain in their popular history of the Kosovo region, “Kosovo is a grave and a grave means death and dust, but it also means rebirth and a source of new life” (). In the traditional account, memories of Kosovo cemented a collective Serb identity throughout the Otto- man centuries, as the Serb people kept their national spirit alive through the support of the Orthodox Church and the practice of orally transmitted epic song. In this way, Kosovo memory became an organizing principle, an inspira- tional link to medieval statehood that guided the Serbs through unimaginable hardships until, finally, in the course of the nineteenth century, they threw off the Ottoman shackles, and channeled national memory into a modern nation- state. At the heart of this national memory stands a highly mythologized account of the battle itself. Drawing on the two historical facts that are known with some certainty – that both the Serbian Prince Lazar and the Ottoman Sultan Murad were killed at the battle – the Kosovo narrative has evolved into a in- tricate morality play highlighting themes of martyrdom, treachery, and heroic self-sacrifice, and supplying a central symbolic source for modern Serb identity. -

Monika Kropej Focusing on Slovenian mythology, the book contains a review of Slovenian mythological, historical, and narrative material. Over 150 supernatural beings are presented, both lexically and according to the role SUPERNATURAL that they have in Slovenian folklore. ey are classied by type, characteristic features, and by the message conveyed in their motifs and contents. e material has been analysed in the context of European and BEINGS some non-European mythological concepts, and the author deals with FROM SLOVENIAN MYTH AND FOLKTALES theory and interpretations as well as the conclusions of domestic and foreign researchers. e book forms new starting points and a C classication of supernatural beings within a frame of a number of M sources, some of which have been published for the rst time in this book. doi: https://doi.org/10.3986/9789610505440_07 From Epic to Memic Balkan National Heroes and Villains across Time, Space, and Genres Aleksandar Takovski* ABSTRACT Heroes and villains are universal archetypes that, until the fragmented and chaotic nineteenth century, were expressions of the same collective fears and desires: fear of extinction, striving for survival and perpetuation, and expression of collective identity. Despite the universal nature of these functions, different geographical and temporal circumstances have affected the processes of hero and villain construction. Using vari- ous genres (epic folk poetry, folklorized art, and internet images), this study traces con- tingencies and continuities in the hero and villain creation processes in four different countries: North Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. Čeprav so junaki in zlobneži glede na svoje funkcije univerzalni, so različne geografske in časovne okoliščine vplivale na proces njihovega izoblikovanja. ©Copyright 2013 Irena Percinkova-Patton Toast to Morrison: The Trickster Paradigm in African American Literature Irena Percinkova-Patton A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2013 Reading Committee: Brian Reed, Chair Sonnet Retman Nikolai Popov Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of English University of Washington Abstract Toast to Morrison: The Trickster Paradigm in African American Literature Irena Percinkova-Patton This dissertation is an examination of the trickster paradigm—an aesthetic, a principle that is specific to black creativity and narration and an enabling force behind the subversive rhetorical strategies of “Signifyin(g)” or double-voicedness, that I trace in the African American vernacular and literary tradition. Through an analysis of the works of Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Melvin Tolson and Toni Morrison, I outline a theory of the trickster principle that is operative on several levels. My project relies on a reading of the trickster as a culture hero—figure of mediation and resistance—and codifies the importance of this figure as a “signifier” in black consciousness that has endured over centuries, encompassing acts of subjugation and transformation in response to historical changes. In addition, my discussion of the trickster tradition opens up a larger argument pertaining to the dynamics of vernacular/literary production and the ability to respond to the demands of American modernity—in terms of mobility, urbanization, industrizalization, etc. I also trace how these processes of reclaiming and recovery of vernacular expressive modes and their use in written literature reveal the unsettling issue of not just coming to terms with American capitalist modernity, but also with the American modernist literary canon.
