Theories of genre are alien to social problems [sozialproblemfremd]”.1 It was, and still is, a challenging remark. However, I would not completely agree because it conflates different levels of discourse and suggests that theories of genre do not contribute much the resolution of social issues. But, let us first consider the context. Schenda made his comments in reaction to papers by

The cinema, that “dream factory” takes over and employs countless mythical motifs – the fight between hero and monster, initiatory combats and ordeals, paradigmatic figures and images (the maiden, the hero, the paradisiacal landscape, hell and do on). Even reading includes a mythological function, only because it replaces the recitation of myths in archaic societies and the oral literature that still lives in the rural communities of Europe, but particularly because, through reading, the modern man succeeds in obtaining an ‘escape from time’ comparable to the ‘emergence from time’ effected by myths.

    ESSAY THE STORY OF STORYTELLING What the hidden relationships of ancient folktales reveal about their evolution—and our own By Ferris Jabr T he story begins, as so many do, with a journey. In this case, it’s a seemingly simple one: a young girl, cloaked in red, must carry a basket of food through the woods to her bedridden grandmother. Along the way, she meets a duplicitous wolf who persuades her to dawdle: Notice the robins, he says; Laze in the sun, breathe in the hy- acinth and bluebells; Wouldn’t your grandmother like a fresh bouquet? Meanwhile, he hastens to her grandmother’s cottage, where he swallows the old woman whole, slips into her bed, and waits for his final course. “Little Red Riding Hood”—with its striding plot, its memorable characters, and its rich symbolism—has inspired ceaseless adaptations. Since the seven- teenth century, writers have expanded, revised, and modernized the beloved fairy tale thousands of times. Literary scholars, anthropologists, and folklorists have devoted reams of text to analyzing the long-lived story, interpreting it as an allegory of puberty and sexual awakening, a parable about spiritual rebirth, a metaphor for nature’s cycles (night swallowing day, day bursting forth again), and a cautionary tale about kidnapping, pedophilia, and rape. Artists have retold the story in just about every medium: television, film, theater, pop mu- sic, graphic novels, video games. Anne Sexton wrote a poem about “a shy budkin / in a red red hood” and a huntsman who rescues her with “a kind of caesarian section.” In Roald Dahl’s version, she “whips a pistol from her knick- ers,” shoots the wolf in the head, and wears his fur as a coat.

    Kosovo Myths: Karadžić, Njegoš, and the Transformation of Serb Memory ALEXANDER GREENAWALT e legend of Serbia’s defeat by invading Ottoman forces at the medieval battle of Kosovo on June , has long occupied a special place in Serbian natio- nal memory. Overcoming historical details that assign the event a more limited significance, the battle has come to symbolize a national death: the cataclys- mic end to the once glorious medieval Serbian state and the beginning of the -year-long Ottoman occupation, a time typically characterized both as an enslavement and as a deep national sleep. But the story also has a generative side. As Alex Dragnich and Slavko Todorovich explain in their popular history of the Kosovo region, “Kosovo is a grave and a grave means death and dust, but it also means rebirth and a source of new life” (). In the traditional account, memories of Kosovo cemented a collective Serb identity throughout the Otto- man centuries, as the Serb people kept their national spirit alive through the support of the Orthodox Church and the practice of orally transmitted epic song. In this way, Kosovo memory became an organizing principle, an inspira- tional link to medieval statehood that guided the Serbs through unimaginable hardships until, finally, in the course of the nineteenth century, they threw off the Ottoman shackles, and channeled national memory into a modern nation- state. At the heart of this national memory stands a highly mythologized account of the battle itself. Drawing on the two historical facts that are known with some certainty – that both the Serbian Prince Lazar and the Ottoman Sultan Murad were killed at the battle – the Kosovo narrative has evolved into a in- tricate morality play highlighting themes of martyrdom, treachery, and heroic self-sacrifice, and supplying a central symbolic source for modern Serb identity.

Studies conducted on the Balkans are a priority, but studies conducted in Europe or anywhere else in the World is accepted as well. Published by the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria – Plovdiv and the University of Plovdiv Publishing house – twice a year. Language: English. Peer review process All articles included in “Ecologia Balkanica” are peer reviewed. Submitted manuscripts are sent to two or three independent peer reviewers, unless they are either out of scope or below threshold for the journal. These manuscripts will generally be reviewed by experts with the aim of reaching a first decision as soon as possible. The journal uses the double anonymity standard for the peer-review process. Reviewers do not have to sign their reports and they do not know who the author(s) of the submitted manuscript are. We ask all authors to provide the contact details (including e-mail addresses) of at least four potential reviewers of their manuscript.

Over 150 supernatural beings are presented, both lexically and according to the role SUPERNATURAL that they have in Slovenian folklore. ey are classied by type, characteristic features, and by the message conveyed in their motifs and contents. e material has been analysed in the context of European and BEINGS some non-European mythological concepts, and the author deals with FROM SLOVENIAN MYTH AND FOLKTALES theory and interpretations as well as the conclusions of domestic and foreign researchers. e book forms new starting points and a C classication of supernatural beings within a frame of a number of M sources, some of which have been published for the rst time in this book. Y CM Monika Kropej is a Research Advisor of the Institute of Slovenian MY Ethnology at the Scientic Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of CY CMY Sciences and Arts, where she works in the section for folk narrative K research. She is the author of the books Pravljica in stvarnost (Folk Tale and Reality), Od ajda do zlatoroga – Slovenska bajeslovna bitja (From Ajd to Goldenhorn – Slovenian Supernatural Beings) and A Treasury of Slovenian Folk Tales. She is co-editor of the journal Studia mythologica Slavica, and a recipient of the 1996 Golden Emblem of the Scientic Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
