    chapter 3 The Holiest of Nations 3.1 The Italian Way to Holiness In 1925 Pius xi succeeded in celebrating the jubilee on its traditional date.1 Mussolini’s parliamentary speech on 3 January had passed over the event in silence, followed by the chamber at Montecitorio itself, but the churches and streets of Rome were abuzz with sermons, celebrations, illuminations, and pro- cessions. Some 600,000 pilgrims arrived from various countries; the wealthier, for the first time, by airplane, even by hydroplane. They came from Argentina, Canada, the Cape of Good Hope, and Australia.2 They found a city in which the great basilicas were ablaze at night, thanks to the massive use of electricity – a city modernized by the building works completed for the occasion, in particu- lar an enlarged central railway station (Stazione Termini). The civic authorities had also taken the step of restoring Christian symbols to their proper place, restoring the cross to the Campidoglio and demolishing, together with other buildings, the clubrooms of the Circolo Giordano Bruno, too close for comfort to the colonnade of St. Peter’s. Over one million visitors, including children and schoolchildren, crossed through the Vatican Walls to visit the World Missionary Fair that Pius xi had chosen to hold in his own gardens for the Holy Year. With over a 100,000 ar- tefacts exhibited in twenty-four pavilions, it was the biggest exhibition that the Church had ever mounted in its history.3 The exhibits included African sculptures of crucifixes and madonnas, Chinese vases painted with scenes por- traying the Christian churches of the Far East, curious head-rests used by the Congolese to sleep without rumpling their sumptuous ceremonial coiffeurs, but also more utilitarian objects such as anatomical pieces and photographs, microscopic specimens and wax moulages which illustrated terrible diseases such as leprosy and the plague, in the eradication of which Catholic missionar- ies had helped to spread Western medicines, and thus to disseminate the latest 1 See G.M.

The Secret History of Pius XI and the Rise of Fascism in Europe (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2014), pp. 549 by Raffaella Perin I have had the privilege to discuss and review David Kertzer’s book in several occasions, praising above all the author’s style and the huge amount of archival and bibliographical sources employed.1 Given my studies on Catholic anti- Semitism in Modern History I have always focused my analysis especially on the way Kertzer dealt with this specific topic. Nonetheless, when I was invited to ponder again on this book I thought it might have been the opportunity for me to underline something new brought to light by this important research on the relationship between Church and State in Italy in the 20s and 30s; namely, the unprecedented attention put on biographical details of the “characters” involved in the plot. I wondered if the author’s stylistic choice to linger on apparently secondary private aspects, conveying a sort of spy story atmosphere, was not only an esthetic quirk but instead played a role in his historiographical judgment. In other words, I tried to guess how better we can understand the reasons that underpinned the policy of the Holy See and the Fascist government by trying to recreate the climate in which all decisions were taken, which was in my opinion one of most laudable efforts of the author. In 2006, the records produced by Pius XI’s Curia, held in the Vatican Secret Archives, were completely opened to scholars.

The Church life from Czechoslovakia during the Communist persecution was related to the figure of Bishop Davidek who found solutions for keeping the Church alive and uncompromised. A small volume with autographs from bishops and priests from that period would be, we believe, a modest tribute to honor his figure and his spiritual succession. H. Exc. Hofrat Dr. Manfred Kierein, Gr. Cr. OBSS opened again his personal archive, offering most of the documents exposed there. Fr. Dr. Mircea Remus Birtz, OBSS wrote a small study and some annexes, trying to introduce the lector on that period. Photographic material was collected too, hoping to increase the records from this booklet. Difficulties in our research were great, the linguistic impediment being a problem (both authors confess that, even if having several ancestors in the Czech Lands, Slovakia, Moravia and Sudet Region, they unfortunately do not speak Czech or Slovak, as some of their forefathers did).

    185 QUINTA PARTE LA CAL A PARTIR DE LA REFORMA DE PABLO VI DE 1969 A 1988 186 187 La decisión de Pablo VI de inserir la Pontificia Comisión para América Latina en la Sagrada Congregación para los Obispos marca un nuevo momento en la historia de este organismo de la Curia Romana. El ambiente de renovación y de aggiornamento que inspiró el Concilio Vaticano II se dejó sentir en la Curia Romana en la reforma que Pablo VI sancionó con la publicación de la Constitución Apostólica Regimini Ecclesiae Universae, lo que provocó la creación de nuevos organismos, la desaparición de algunos y la reestructuración de otros. Con respecto a la CAL el Santo Padre dispuso que asumiera una nueva configuración en correspondencia con las cambiantes circunstancias de la Iglesia y de la sociedad en América Latina y en Europa. El Episcopado latinoamericano era cada vez más organizado y tomaba mayor conciencia de su misión y de su protagonismo en la renovación del catolicismo en el Continente, lo que exigía una presencia más activa en los organismos centrales de la Santa Sede que se ocupaban de la Iglesia en Latinoamérica. Así, pues, la nueva etapa de la historia de la CAL revela una reestructuración de la Comisión misma y de su Consejo General con mayor presencia del Episcopado de América Latina. Se evidencia, igualmente, una relevante presencia del CELAM y de los Obispos latinoamericanos en el estudio y búsqueda de soluciones de los problemas pastorales y doctrinales que se presentaban a la acción evangelizadora de la Iglesia. Es, en definitiva, un período en el cual los esfuerzos de la Iglesia en favor de la renovación católica del Continente comienzan a dar sus frutos.
