Abgeschiedenheit, steile Anstiege und wilde Natur umso mehr. Von Ilona Schäkel Das schmuddelige Schneefeld, das unseren Weg verschluckt, ist mit Flüchen nicht zu beeindrucken. Fast drei Stunden haben wir uns den steilen Pfad hinaufgeschraubt, etliche Kilo Gepäck auf dem Rücken. Vielleicht fünfzehn Minuten trennen uns noch von unserem Nachtlager in der Alpe Baranca. Und jetzt das. Wütend starren wir auf die vereiste, abschüssige Schneedecke, als wäre sie auf diese Weise zum Schmelzen zu bringen. Eines steht fest: Hinüberzugehen verlangt mehr Mut als wir zu bieten haben. In einem Hohlraum unter dem Schnee gurgelt ein Bach. Kalter Wasserdampf schlägt uns entgegen, als hätte jemand die Tür zu einem riesigen Kühlschrank aufgemacht. Es ist der vierte Tag unserer Wanderung in den piemontesischen Alpen. Genauer gesagt, auf der „Grande Traversata delle Alpi“, kurz der „GTA“. In Deutschland ist dieser Weitwanderweg durch die landschaftlich reizvollen italienischen Westalpen bisher nur ausgesprochenen Kennern ein Begriff. Er beginnt in der Nähe der grauen Grenzstadt Domodossola und verläuft in einem sanften Bogen durchs Gebirge über 55 Etappen rund tausend Kilometer bis zum Mittelmeer. Wer die GTA wandern will, muss Höhenmeter lieben. Zwischen 600 bis 1500 Meter geht es täglich bergauf - und wieder bergab. Weil die schmalen Täler hier vom Alpenrand tief ins Alpeninnere einschneiden, kommt kaum eine Etappe ohne steile Anstiege und Pässe aus. Belohnt wird die Plackerei mit einsamen, wilden Landschaften, atemberaubenden Ausblicken und der Romantik des allmählichen Verfalls. Denn die Route führt durch ehemaliges Kulturland, vorbei an verlassenen Bergbauernhöfen und Kapellen, über bucklige Saum- und Wiesenwege, alte Römerstraßen und ausgediente Mulatterien, Maultierpfade, auf denen in besseren Zeiten Waren und Vieh transportiert wurden.

One easy, convenient Away to enjoy these superb natural surroundings is undoubtedly a day spent relaxing in the open air in one of the numerous areas equipped for the purpose that visitors can find throughout the region. For some time now, our Department, in collaboration with the various local administrations, has been devoting particular attention to the creation and upkeep of these delightful, inviting areas. As you flick through these pages, you can easily appreciate the amount of hard work and dedication that has gone into offering visitors such appealing, genuine, peaceful spots where they can breathe in the scent of the forest, admire breathtaking scenery or lie down and relax by the banks of lakes and rivers – and all of this in the comfort and convenience offered by the facilities available. There are now a total of 34 specially equipped areas throughout the region, located at various altitudes, from the 350 metres of the Cignas area in Donnas village up to the 2020 m a.s.l. of the Lake Lod area in Chamois village. All of them are well equipped for visitors, offering tables, benches, water fountains, barbecues and toilets, as well as easy access for visitors with disabilities. Each of the files presented here also contains interesting basic information on the type of plant life present, the surrounding scenery and the walking trips to be enjoyed nearby. There is also information on the eleven equipped routes in the region, and a few simple yet important rules on how to make the most of the facilities available while respecting both nature and your fellow visitors.
