Graduation of the first class of docents, spring 1983 The Nature Conservancy hosted a dedication ceremony of the Vina Plains Preserve, at the old sheep-barn, on 16 April 1983 Mounts Lassen and Brokeoff showed that day 35 years ago 350 people attended, for a program by TNC—with a band, a catered chicken picnic lunch, and tours of the landscape by the docents. Landscape tours by the docents began for the pubic in 1984, starting from old logs located north of the sheep-barn. Over 1200 people visited VPP during the first several years of tours. The docent committee prepared a VPP handbook in 1984 (1994 revision shown) The Nature Conservancy has maintained ownership—and management—of the Preserve. -

Five occurrences are afforded some protection by virtue of their location on public land, but no particular conservation efforts have been undertaken in those areas. 2. ASTRAGALUS TENER VAR. TENER (ALKALI MILK-VETCH) a. Description and Taxonomy Taxonomy.—Alkali milk-vetch is in the pea family Fabaceae. Gray (1864) named Astragalus tener, commonly known as alkali milk-vetch. He gave the type locality only as “California ... from near Monterey or San Francisco” (Gray 1864:206). No varieties were named until Barneby (1950) reduced Astragalus titi, commonly known as coastal dunes milk-vetch, from a full species to the variety Astragalus tener var. titi. In so doing, the combination Astragalus tener var. tener was created automatically to represent Gray’s original material (i.e., alkali milk-vetch), according to accepted rules of botanical nomenclature. Another common name by which this variety is known is slender rattle-weed (Abrams 1944). Description and Identification.—Astragalus tener var. tener (Figure II-22) is similar in most respects to A. tener var. ferrisiae. However, the two taxa differ in leaflet shape and fruit morphology. Astragalus tener var. tener leaflets vary, even on the same plant, from narrow and pointed to wedge-shaped with blunt or notched tips. In A. tener var. tener, the pod is only 1 to 2.5 centimeters (0.4 to 1.0 inch) long and straight or only slightly curved. The base of the pod is typically rounded; if stalk-like, the base is much less than 3 millimeters (0.12 inch) long. -

This biology letter report also includes a discussion of any potential biological resources that may be subject to regulation under the City of Chula Vista Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) Subarea Plan (Subarea Plan) (City of Chula Vista 2003). Project Location The property (i.e., on-site; Assessor’s Parcel Number 644-040-01-00) occupies 9.79 acres and is located approximately 0.2 miles east of Interstate 805 between Main Street and Olympic Parkway (Figure 1, Project Location). The project also includes an off-site impact area of 0.22 acre located along the southeastern corner of the site where future utility connections may occur, making the total study area acreage for the project 10.01 acres. The site is located on Shinohara Lane accessed from Brandywine Avenue and is located on the U.S. Geological Service 7.5-minute series topographic Imperial Beach quadrangle map. The site exists within an urban portion of the City and is bound on the south and east by industrial buildings, to the west by single-family residences, and to the north by multi-family condominiums (Figure 2, Aerial Image). -

E-mail: [email protected] RESUMEN La flora de los alrededores de Tocopilla está compuesta por 146 especies de plantas vasculares. Entre las formas de vida, las terófitas presentan el mayor número de especies en la flora (43%), pero están totalmente ausentes durante los años secos. Dos unidades de vegetación pueden ser identificadas: matorral desértico de Nolana peruviana, en las quebradas y laderas bajo 500 m de altitud, y matorral desértico de Eulychnia iquiquensis y Ephedra breana, en las laderas sobre 500 m. Se discuten algunos aspectos relativos a la flora y la relación entre el clima y la vegetación. Palabras clave: Ambientes áridos, Biogeografía, Clima, Comunidades vegetales, Desierto de Atacama. ABSTRACT Observations on the flora and vegetation of Tocopilla surroundings (22ºS, Chile). The flora of Tocopilla and adjacent zones is composed of 146 vascular plant species. Among the life- forms, the therophytes represent the highest proportion of the flora (43%), but are absent during the dry years.
