The impact of land use on invertebrate assemblages in the Succulent Karoo, South Africa. Samways December 2008 Abstract The Succulent Karoo biodiversity hotspot is threatened by pressure caused by increasing human populations and its associated land use types. Land use is primarily focussed on agriculture, with livestock grazing as a dominant land use in the region. Cultivation is also practiced along the major perennial rivers, and in drier areas, where this largely depends on rainfall. Only about seven percent of the biome is formally protected, and this area substantially under-represents the biodiversity of the Succulent Karoo and does not incorporate key ecological processes and biodiversity drivers. Therefore, there is urgent need for outside reserve conservation initiatives, whose success depend on understanding the ecosystem function of the Succulent Karoo. This study aimed to determine the impacts of heavy grazing, light grazing and cultivation (in a 30-year old fallow field) on assemblages of ground-dwelling and flying invertebrates. Seasonal assemblage changes were also determined. Vegetation structure and composition were determined using the line-intercept method to determine if vegetation patterns explain patterns in invertebrate assemblages. Abandoned fields harbour the lowest number of plant species, and these together with the heavily grazed sizes are dominated by a high cover of Galenia africana (Aizoaceae). Lightly grazed sites have the highest structural complexity, with a high cover of succulents and non-succulent perennials. -

PETERSEN† International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), Aleppo, Syria †Plant and Animal Sciences Department, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602, USA 1Corresponding author’s e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Rangeland degradation has been widespread and severe throughout the Syrian steppe as a result of both unfavorable environmental conditions and human induced impacts. To explore the effectiveness of management-based strategies on establishing sustainable rangeland development, we compared the response of temporarily removing grazing from rangelands ecosystems to those under a continuous heavy grazing regime. Results indicated that ungrazed sites had both higher biomass production and plant species composition than grazed sites. Ungrazed plots produced more than fourfold herbaceous biomass production than continuously grazed plots (p < 0.001). Extent of plant cover was 20% greater in ungrazed plots than grazed plots (33.5 & 13.5%, respectively). Furthermore areas protected from heavy grazing had over 200% greater species composition. Thus, protection from grazing can increase forage production and species composition, but may not necessarily improve plant species available for livestock utilization. A more balanced grazing management approach is recommended to achieve an optimal condition of biomass production (quantity), vegetation cover, quality and available forage species that contribute to proving livestock grazing conditions. ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to establish new protocol for propagation via tissue culture techniques to observe the effect of plant growth regulators especially cytokinins, gibberellic acid and auxins with different concentrations on in vitro growth of Eriocephalus africanus L. for improving the potentiality of regeneration and secondary metabolites production and identification of the main active constituents of volatile oil by GC/MS. The results showed that, the best sterilization treatment was the shoot tip explants rinsed in a solution of clorox at 15% for 15 min was gave the highest values for survival percentage and plant strength 100% and 4.58, respectively also B5 medium at full strength gave the best results in the both growth measurements. BAP at 2.00 mg/l recorded the highest values in survival percentage (93.33%), shootlet number/cluster (16.50) and shootlet strength (4.50), respectively. Using the high level from GA3 (4.00 mg/l) in medium was more effective in the elongation of shootlets. In rooting stage B5 medium supplemented with 0.50 mg/l Scientific J.
