IOS Press, Chapter Developments in Technical Typesetting: TeX at the End of the th Century Barbara Beeton Editor, TUGboat, the Communications of the TeX Users Group Introduction The composition of mathematical and technical material has traditionally been considered “penalty copy”, because of both the large number of special sym- bols required, and the complicated arrangement of these symbols on the page. While careful exposition has always been a valued skill for the mathematician or scientist, the tools were not available to allow authors to complete the presentation until relatively recently. The machinery has now come together: a desktop or portable computer; a text editor; an input language that is reasonably intuitive to a scientific author; a composition program that “understands” what mathematical notation is supposed to look like; a laser printer with a resolution high enough to print even very small symbols clearly. The composition engine is TeX, by Donald Knuth of Stanford University. This tool, originally developed specifically to pro- duce the second edition of Knuth’s The Art of Computer Programming, Volume , has been adopted by mathematicians, physicists, and other scientists for their own use. A number of scientific and technical publishers accept electronic manuscripts prepared with TeX and insert them directly into their production flow, while other publishers use TeX as a back end, continuing to accept and process copy in the tra- ditional manner. TeX manuscripts are circulated in electronic form by their authors in e-mail and posted into preprint archives on the World Wide Web; they are portable and durable — a new edition of a work need not be typed from scratch, but can be modified from the file of the previous edition. -

GR-671 00 Xanthi Greece E-mail: asyropoulos at yahoo dot com The new OpenType MATH font table contains important information that can be used to correctly and uniformly render mathematical con- tent (e.g., mathematical formulae, equations, etc.). Until now, all sys- tems in order to render XML encoded mathematical content employed some standard algorithms together with some standard sets of TrueType and/or Type 1 fonts, which contained the necessary glyphs. Unfortu- nately, this approach does not produce uniform results because certain parameters (e.g., the thickness of the fraction line, the scale factor of superscripts/subscripts, etc.) are system-dependant, that is, their exact values will depend on the particular setup of a given system. Fortunately, the new OpenType MATH table can be used to remedy this situation. In particular, by extending renderers so as to be able to render mathemat- ical contents with user-specified fonts, the result will be uniform across systems and platforms. In other words, the proposed technology would allow mathematical content to be rendered the same way ordinary text is rendered across platforms and systems. 1 Introduction The OpenType font format is a new cross-platform font file format developed jointly by Adobe and Microsoft. OpenType fonts may contain glyphs with ei- ther cubic B´eziersplines (used in PostScript fonts) or with quadratic B´ezier splines (used in TrueType fonts). -

We introduce the basic concepts needed to understand how writing systems and character encodings function, and how they work together. The intersection of the Unicode Standard and the International Phonetic Al- phabet is often not met without frustration by users. Nevertheless, thetwo standards have provided language researchers with a consistent computational architecture needed to process, publish and analyze data from many different languages. We bring to light common, but not always transparent, pitfalls that researchers face when working with Unicode and IPA. Our research uses quantitative methods to compare languages and uncover and clarify their phylogenetic relations. However, the majority of lexical data available from the world’s languages is in author- or document-specific orthogra- phies. -

The data gathered by questionnaire and recorded sounds along with in-terview with the local people, in particular literate ones who had the greatest exposure to the third language (lingua franca). The researcher could find significant changes which were traced to the impact of Persian as lingua franca in the region. This research is an innovation in its own kind and helps those who follow lingua franca and language changes and try to find any relations of which with linguistic purposes as well as language teaching. Introduction The present study aims to consider the linguistic influence of official standard Persian (as lingua franca) on non-official languages, Kurdish and Turkish, across the Western Azerbai-jan province. 12 “To Every Nation, Kindred, Tongue, and People” Po Nien (Felipe) Chou and Petra Chou Po Nien (Felipe) Chou is a religious educator and manager of the Offi ce of Research for the Seminaries and Institutes (S&I) of Th e Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Petra Chou is a homemaker and teaches in the Chinese Immersion program for the Alpine School District. he Book of Mormon was fi rst translated into the English language by Tthe Prophet Joseph Smith in 1829. Th e goal is now to make it avail- able “to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people” (Mosiah 15:28). Th is chapter explores the eff orts of Th e Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to bring forth the Book of Mormon in other languages and to make it accessible to all the world. Although it will not provide an exhaustive review of all 110 translations (87 full book and 23 selections)1 distributed by the Church by spring 2015, it will examine a number of translations, versions, and editions, along with the eff orts to bring forth this sacred volume to “all nations, kindreds, tongues and people” (D&C 42:58). Ancient prophets declared that in the latter days the Lord would “com- mence his work among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, to bring about the restoration of his people upon the earth” (2 Nephi 30:8). Th e Book of Mormon was to “be kept and preserved” so that the knowledge of the Savior and his gospel would go forth and be taught unto “every nation, kindred, tongue, and people” in preparation for the Second Coming of the 228 Po Nien (Felipe) Chou and Petra Chou Lord (see 1 Nephi 13:40; Mosiah 3:20; Alma 37:4; D&C 42:48; D&C 133:37). -

Old Cyrillic in Unicode* Ivan A Derzhanski Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences [email protected] The current version of the Unicode Standard acknowledges the existence of a pre- modern version of the Cyrillic script, but its support thereof is limited to assigning code points to several obsolete letters. Meanwhile mediæval Cyrillic manuscripts and some early printed books feature a plethora of letter shapes, ligatures, diacritic and punctuation marks that want proper representation. (In addition, contemporary editions of mediæval texts employ a variety of annotation signs.) As generally with scripts that predate printing, an obvious problem is the abundance of functional, chronological, regional and decorative variant shapes, the precise details of whose distribution are often unknown. The present contents of the block will need to be interpreted with Old Cyrillic in mind, and decisions to be made as to which remaining characters should be implemented via Unicode’s mechanism of variation selection, as ligatures in the typeface, or as code points in the Private space or the standard Cyrillic block. I discuss the initial stage of this work. The Unicode Standard (Unicode 4.0.1) makes a controversial statement: The historical form of the Cyrillic alphabet is treated as a font style variation of modern Cyrillic because the historical forms are relatively close to the modern appearance, and because some of them are still in modern use in languages other than Russian (for example, U+0406 “I” CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER I is used in modern Ukrainian and Byelorussian). Some of the letters in this range were used in modern typefaces in Russian and Bulgarian. -
