Youthful Internationalism in the Age of ‘Socialism in One Country’: Komsomol’tsy, Pioneers and ‘World Revolution’ in the Interwar Period Matthias Neumann On the 1st of March 1927, two Komsomol members from the Chuvash Republic, located in the centre of European Russia, wrote an emotional letter to Comrade Stalin. Reflecting on the revolutionary upheavals in China, they attacked the inaction of the Komsomol and the party and expressed their sincere determination to self-mobilise and join the proletarian forces in China. ‘We do not need empty slogans such as “The Komsomol is prepared”’, ‘We must not live like this’ they wrote and boasted ‘we guarantee that we are able to mobilise thousands of Komsomol members who have the desire to go to China and fight in the army of the Guomindang.’ This was after all, they forcefully stressed, the purpose for which ‘our party and our Komsomol exist.’1 These youngsters were not alone in their views. As the coverage on the situation in China intensified in the Komsomol press in March, numerous similar individual and collective letters were received by party and Komsomol leaders.2 The young authors, all male as far as they were named, expressed their genuine enthusiasm for the revolution in China. The letters revealed not only a youthful romanticism for the revolutionary fight abroad and the idea of spreading the revolution, but often an underlying sense of disillusionment with the inertia of the revolutionary project at home. A few months earlier, in 1926 during the campaign against the so-called eseninshchina3, a fellow Komsomol member took a quite different view on the prospect of spreading the revolution around the world. -

The main aim of the meinoirists is to give their interpretation of the past. Despite the personal insight that these works provide on Soviet history, Western academics have not studied them in any detail. The principal aim of this paper is to prove Soviet political memoir’s importance as a research tool. The tight link between politics and literature characterizes the nature of Soviet political memoir. All forms of Soviet literature had to reform their brand of writing as the Kremlin’s policies changed from Stalin’s ruthless reign to Gorbachev’s period of openness. -

European Writers: The Twentieth Century. Ed. George Stade. Vol. 11. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1983. Pp. 1885-1914. Babel's extant output: movie scripts, early short Isaac Babel fiction, journalistic sketches, one translation, and a few later stories that remained unpublished in Babel's lifetime (they were considered offensive either to the (1894 – 1940) party line or the censor's sense of public delicacy). His most famous work, the cycle of short stories Gregory Freidin and vignettes, Konarmiia (Red Cavalry), was first published in a separate edition in 1926. It dealt with the experiences of the Russo-Polish War of 1920 as (A version of this essay in Critical Biography was seen through the bespectacled eyes of a Russian published in European Writer of the Twentieth Jewish intellectual working, as Babel himself had Century [NY: Scribners, 1990]) done, for the newspaper of the red Cossack army. This autobiographical aura played a key rôle in the success and popularity of the cycle. The thirty three jewel-like pieces, strung together to form the first Isaac Babel (1894-1940) was, perhaps, the first edition of Red Cavalry, were composed in a short Soviet prose writer to achieve a truly stellar stature in period of time, between the summer of 1923 and the Russia, to enjoy a wide-ranging international beginning of 1925, and together constitute Babel's reputation as a grand master of the short story,1 and lengthiest work of fiction (two more pieces would be to continue to influence—directly through his own added subsequently). They also represent his most work as well as through criticism and scholarship— innovative and daring technical accomplishment. -

ABSTRACT BITCHES AND THIEVES: GULAG GUARDS, ADMINISTRATORS, AND PROFESSIONAL CRIMINALS IN THE BITCHES’ WAR by Adam Richard Rodger Amongst the professional criminals imprisoned in the Soviet Gulag, a split developed between those who kept to the Thieves’ Law and those who broke the Law and collaborated with the State. This violent schism, the Bitches’ War, raged across the entire Gulag system, becoming most heated between 1948 and 1953, and implicated the camps’ guards and administrators as much as the prisoners themselves. This research examines primary and secondary sources, heavily incorporating Gulag survivor memoirs, to investigate the culture of the Thieves-in-Law, these professional criminals, and also to uncover the involvement, intentions, and guilt of the camp administration. This study argues that the Bitches’ War sheds light on the real purpose and function of the Gulag; that it was not primarily about ideological re-education, nor was it primarily about economics and production, but that the Gulag served as a model for social control through use of power, persuasion, and violence. Why you'll like it: Literary, novel-within-novel, darkly humorous, witty. About the Author: Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940) was a doctor, a novelist, a playwright, a short-story writer, and the assistant director of the Moscow Arts Theater. His body of work includes The White Guard , The Fatal Eggs , Heart of a Dog , and his masterpiece, The Master and Margarita , published more than twenty-five years after his death and cited as an inspiration for Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses . Lesley Milne. Mikhail Bulgakov: a Critical Biography
Lesley Milne. Mikhail Bulgakov: A Critical Biography. Cambridge/ New York: Cambridge University Press, 1990. xiv, 324 pp. Lesley Milne'sMikhail Bulgakoa: ACritical Biograph.y, although not the first critical biography of Bulgakov, is timely for at least three reasons. First, it became available just before Bulgakov's centenary; second, its concise form makes the book useful for most courses on Bulgakov and Soviet literature of the period; third, the quality of the writing and the presentation of new data on Bulgakov for English speakingstudents and scholars make this biography valuable. Milne considers Bulgakov as a writer of the 1920s and 1930s. By doing so, she breaks with the myth of Bulgakov as a "contemporary" writer, as he is perceived in present day Russia. Making use of well-researched data, Milne carefully traces Bulgakov's difficult path to "brilliance" ("brilliant" is a favorite adjective in Bulgakov's lexicon). Bulgakov's early years have been described in detail in substantial biographies by M. Chudakova, E. Proffer, and C. Wright. This must be the reason why Milne pays little attention to the writer's childhood and starts her investigation with his creative years, i. e., from 1921. That year he left medicine for good and devoted himself to literature. Concentrating on the years from 1921 to 1940 (the year of his death), Milne closely follows changes in Bulgakov's personal and creative life with a strong accent on the latter. The book is well illustrated and organized. It consists often chapters, title of each signaling a landmark in Bulgakov's literary career and dealing with a specific literary work. -

JANNEKE VAN DE STADT TWO TALES OF ONE CITY: ISAAC BABEL, FELLOW TRAVELING, AND THE END OF NEP * Abstract “An Evening at the Empress’s” (1922) and “The Road” (1932), two nar- ratives by Isaac Babel that have garnered relatively little critical attention, chart the harrowing descent of a once free-wheeling, confident NEP-era writer into the treacherous creative abyss that followed thereafter. While they have been described in passing as related variants, this study propos- es that the stories in question share a dark and much more deliberate compositional relationship. Over a span of ten years, Babel first depicts the open, independently-traveled creative road of the early twenties, and then reconfigures it to reflect its methodical narrowing, and eventual re- duction, to a vertiginous tight rope. This essay, in which the 1932 story is re-read through the revealing lens of its antecedent, examines Babel’s ret- rospective take on NEP as he witnessed, and experienced, the crippling effects of its dissolution. “The Marxian method affords an opportunity to estimate the condi- tions for the development of the new art, to trace all its sources, to help the most progressive tendencies by a critical illumination of the road, but it does not do more than that.
