TH E Genealogical investigations which are here given were originally made some twelve years ago they have now been c Orre éte d up to date , with much care , though it is wellnigh

fe impossible to attain pe r ét accuracy in such matters . The authorities chiefly relied uponwere Collins and Burke .

2 The question, on page , whether the line separating

Royalty from is to be drawn between the grandsons

- o f e and the great grandsons the Sovereign , has recently b en answered in the affirmative ; fo r it was decided that the

’ ' Je e n s - D ufl Q great granddaughter, Alexandra , had no rank by reason of her , but only such as is enjoyed by the of Dukes in general .

AL ESCENT R OY D .

IN o f o f the Roll the House ,

1 8 which was issued in 79 , the name

o f the new Duke of Cumberland , it

was noticed , was placed , not like his

’ o f s , the late Hanover,

al among the Roy Dukes , but among

s the ordinary Duke , taking pre c e de nce between their Graces o f

Northumberland and Wellington .

It would appear, therefore, that it had been decided by the

’ o r Heralds College other competent authority, that the ‘ relationship o f the Duke o f Cumberland to “ was to o remote to allow o f his being considered a of ” s the Royal . If this is the ca e, it follows as a corollary, ” that the Duke ought to be mentioned Simply as His Grace, and that it would be incorrect to prefix to his name (o r

name n — rather, to his title, for what his , sur ame is , has n o t yet been ascertained)the mystic letters and that if he should ever take his seat in Parliament , he will not share with his the Duke o fCambridge in the designa ” d tion of illustrious , but will figure simply as a noble uke .

n faét w In co sequence of the , to which we Shall dra further

o f attention presently , that the new Duke Cumberland t 2 Royal Descen . occupies a position in the English Peerage for which no precedent can be found without a long historical search, it actually follows that the public mind is in a state o f very considerable ignorance with regard to his status as an

English nobleman . ’ O fiicial information will be wanted on the following points :

1 al ! . What degree of constitutes Roy ty The late Duke of Cumberland was the grandson o f an “ o f English King , and ranked as an English Prince ( the ” “ o f w Blood Royal , though not the hile his

- successor is only the great grandson o f an English King.

Are we to draw the line , separating Royalty from Nobility, — between the grandsons and the great grandsons, of the So vereign 2 . What will the daughters and o f o f ! so n o f the Duke Cumberland bear The eldest will ,

’ course, bear his father s second title , of Armagh, and the other children will have the prefix of “ or Lady ! to their christian names . But what name will follow There is a sort of confused notion that Gu elph is the surname Ofthe no w h reigning , the House of Brunswick ; but t is is a

v point which ought to be cleared up decisi ely. It is a very remarkable fact that no Royal Dukedom has ever previously, in modern times, lasted long enough to de l generate from Roya ty to Nobility or , in other

o r words, that no of a sovereign has ever left ’ so n w behind him a son s , who ould occupy the same position

e as the pres nt Duke of Cumberland . t Royal Descen . 3

e . G orge I . had no younger sons George II . had

o ne e none who married . George III . had only broth r who left children , viz . , the Duke of Gloucester, whose title died with his son and successor in 1 8 3 4 : and although the sev en

f fif - o . t sons George III all lived to at least the age of y two ,

o f and all, except the Duke Sussex , were married according

o f Aét to the provisions the Royal , yet the seven h ad t wo ro a l V iz o f but y sons between them , . , the late King

Hanover and the present Duke o fCambridge .

n o t o f I We have spoken of the five George . ,

o f but none these were married, and , indeed , only the youngest, Ernest , was an English Peer , being

1 1 6 created Duke of York and Albany in 7 . He died in

1 2 8 7 . And if we trace the sovereigns o f backwards from George I . we shall find that at no period since the

o f Wars the Roses has a Dukedom , conferred upon a ’ so n to s younger , descended the third generation .

o f o f How far the case of Richard , Duke York , father

is Edward applicable to the questions raised above, we

. d know not He was grandson to the first Duke, E mund, so n o f Edward III . ; but, through his , Lady Anne

- o f Mortimer , great granddaughter Lionel, Duke of Clarence , h e to was unquestionably entitled the crown itself, after the death Of his and mother . His case , therefore , can hardly be taken as a precedent ; and it really seems as if an Aét of Parliament would be necessary , to settle the doubtful points raised by the accession o fthe Duke of Cumberland to a dukedom originally royal . 4 Royal Descen t

“ But for the religious difficulty at the time o f the

Q V iéto ria English Revolution , ! ueen would now be simply

as nowhere a claimant to the throne . For although , as is

e xtin ét well known , all former reigning are , in the eyes Of the Salic Law ; since there are no persons living who

ro m ath er to s o n fr a are lineally descended , f f , om the Stu rts ,

o r Tudors, Plantagenets yet the lineal descendants of some o f i as i e e n those , trac ng their legitimate descent, Q

V iéto ria th ro u h emales are also does, g f , , in all probability , exceedingly numerous ; and among the descendants o f Ki ng I James . , the present holds only a low position .

’ For it is only through that King s , Elizabeth ,

( i its b een of Bohemia, that the House of Brunswick der ves

claim to the English Crown ; George I . having been the

o f t son the Elec ress Sophia , the youngest daughter of the ’ aforesaid Elizabeth . Now , not only did two of Sophia s

a brothers, Charles Louis, and Edward , leave descend nts , many

o f I whom are now living , but also her uncle, King Charles . , was the o f a large number o f the royal and grand

o f ducal families now existing on the Continent Europe . Let u s briefly indicate these three lines of descendants from

I o ne o f James . , every which would, from considerations o f

birth l on y, have a better claim to the English throne than

o f has the House Brunswick .

1 D escendants o Charles I — . f . These trace th rough the o f marriage his daughter Henrietta to Philip, Duke of ! IV Orleans , only brother of Louis . Her daughter Anna ‘ ct o f a Maria married Vi or Amadeus , Duke S voy and first

1 2 n King of Sardinia, who died in 73 , leavi g two children ,

6 t Royal Descen .

d h is from the hea ship of the Stuarts , grandmother, Theresa ,

o f ! Charles . of France, having been the daughter o f t Vic or Amadeus II . mentioned above .

V o f 1 8 Francis Duke Modena , dying without in 75 , his niece (daughter o f his younger brother Ferdinand) Mary

2 Theresa Henrietta Dorothea of Modena (born July , w ife Of Prince Louis of Bavaria , is now representative of the eldest Line Of the Royal and Heiress of Line o f King Charles I .

The Heiress of the Royal House of Stuart , who married,

2 o tb 1 8 6 8 o se t ar February, , Prince Louis Leopold J p y

l so n o f A oysius Alfred, eldest Luitpold, Prince of

so n Bavaria , has, with other issue, an eldest , Robert Mary

1 8 th 1 8 6 Luitpold Ferdinand , born the of May , 9 .

Next to Mary Theresa Henrietta Dorothea Of Modena,

Princess Louis of Bavaria, and her children, would come the

f f V o f o O . descendants the Francis , Duke Modena,

o f a s viz . , first the Duke Parma and his f mily, and econdly, the so n IL o f of Ferdinand , late King Naples, by his first wife

o f o f Christina , who was the youngest Francis V . Duke

The r Modena . Duke of Pa ma is doubly descended from

t . Vic or Amadeus II , his mother being the of Henry V . o fFrance . Several o fthese names occur again if we trace the i ssue of

Adelaide , Duchess of Burgundy, mentioned above as daughter o fViéto r Amadeus I . and his wife Anne , the granddaughter o f our King Charles I . For the Duchess was the mother of King Louis ! V forefather Of the Comte de Chambord

d o f o f (Henry V . ) and also (through his aughters) the Dukes t Royal Descen . 7

o f o f Parma, the King of Saxony , and all the numerous

o f o f l e e n progeny Louisa Parma, Q of Charles IV . of Spain ; among whom are included the present Kings Of Spain and

P o rtu al th e o f Carlo s the g , late Emperor Brazil, Don , late King

to o of Naples and his large family , and many others , numerous to mention ; who would, however, be far more numerous, in

so all probability, were it not for the habit, common amongst

o f them, marrying or nieces , which makes their pedi

o f - grees resemble that a race horse, and by which it comes to

o f pass that most of the descendants Charles I . now living can l trace their lineage from him not only in one way, but in severa .

So much, then , for the lineal descendants of King Charles

o f I . England . It was said above that his nephews, the

Lo u is and o f

Princes Charles g Edward (the brothers the

- r better known P inces Rupert and Maurice), left numerous descendants .

- P i c h arles Lo u is 1 6 1 was 2 . r n e C , born in 7, the father of f o . the Duchess Elizabeth Orleans , mother of Philip II the

u o f wh o Regent D ke of Orleans, and Elizabeth married

o f Leopold the Good , Duke Lorraine .

From the Regent are descended the present Orleans family,

ff : so n I was by two di erent lines for his , Duke Louis . , the ” o f é grandfather Egalit , while his daughter , the Duchess of f o é . Modena, was maternal grandmother to the wife Egalit

o f The descendants of Louis Philippe , the King the French , é who was the son of Egalit , are numerous and increasing , for his five sons and three daughters all had children . The Duchess of Modena (the Regent’s daughter)was also V D through her son Hercules, ancestress of Francis . , uke of 8 Royal Descen t .

b ff Modena , y two di erent lines ; the mother of Francis V .

o having married her own uncle , a grands n of Duke Hercules .

’ From the Duchess of Lorraine , the Regent s sister, an enormous number of royal and quasi - royal personages are

so n I r descended , through her Francis . , Empe or of Germany, of Maria Theresa , and also through her daughter I who married King Charles Emanuel . , whose descendants e l have b en a ready mentioned . f o . Among the descendants Francis I and Maria Theresa,

o f n we may mention the present Emperor Austria, the Ki g o f o f Italy (whose maternal grandfather, Regnier, was ninth

o f the eleven sons Leopold II . ) the King Of Saxony , Leopold , Grand Duke o f Tuscany and h is wife : as well as o ur old

o f o f friends, Henry V . the late King Naples, the late Emperor

o f Brazil , the Kings Spain and Portugal , and all the Orleans family, the late Queen of the French having been a grand

Of and daughter Francis I . Maria Theresa.

Edward P rince P alatine o f , , the other nephew King Charles

o f I who left issue , was also an ancestor of most those persons now living who have been mentioned as descendants o f his

o r a Fo r brother Charles Louis, of their uncle King Ch rles I .

’ Be ne diéta r , the youngest of Prince Edward s three daughte s,

o f u married John Frederic , a Duke Hanover, ncle of

I. George , and left two daughters, from the elder of whom

o f u the Dukes Modena, etc . , are descended, while the yo nger ,

o f I Wilhelmine, wife Joseph . , Emperor of Germany, was

o f grandmother the two Polish , Amelia and l l re s eétiv e . o f Josephine, who married p y Char es III Spain,

o and L uis, the French Dauphin ; also from Frederic , the Royal Descen t . 9

o f brother of the last mentioned princesses , the King Saxony is n desce ded .

o f w Louisa , the eldest daughter Ed ard, Prince Palatine ,

o f married Louis, Prince Salms, and their son , Louis Otto , m had numerous descendants , many of whom ust be now

see living , but in the pedigree which we have consulted , we

' - : ra nk o f no well known names nor, indeed , is the the present ” A s - generation noted . certain Con tantine, great grandson o f 1 6 2 Louis Otto , occurs as having been born in 7 and

1 8 2 8 having died in , leaving eight sons and two daughters , most of whom had children ; the present head o f the branch “ ” r 1 8 1 being p obably his grandson Alfred , born in 4 , who “ ” 1 8 6 married in 3 Augusta of Croy Dulmen , and had five

t . e sons and Six daugh ers But whether the said Alfr d , if

’ r o r lain e rr living , is a P ince , a Duke, a Count , only p H , and

t d Sa wha his surname may be , we cannot un ertake to y . It would be interesting to know whether any o fthis branch

’ L s t of James descendants have married English subjec s , and w t hether, consequently , Queen Vic oria has nearer relations in

“ h er t o f o r o f Kingdom han the descendants Henry VII . ,

Edward III . w Anne, the second daughter of Prince Ed ard, married

é o f‘ é Henry Julius, Prince of Cond , son the great Cond and

Pr é from her the inces of Cond and Conti were descended , é and also Louisa the mother of Egalit . Thus the Orleans branch of the Bourbons is related in many ways , though very distantly, to the House of Brunswick . ! pon the whole , then , it appears that there are numerous

o f no w legitimate descendants King James I . living ; almost I O t Royal Descen .

w all of whom are foreigners, and most of hom are members of

- royal or grand ducal families . Many of these , moreover, can a ff trace their descent from J mes I . in several di erent ways ,

n owi g to the frequent of cousins of various degrees . t In fac , if the genealogical tables upon which we rely, and w hich were copied from a History of the Stuarts , published t some thirty years ago , are correc , we find that Robert , Duke

d t —o n e ff Of Parma , is escended in as many as wenty di erent

o f ways from James I . For each his grandmothers had Six lines of descent from that monarch, while one of his grandfathers

fiv e o f had , and the other four . By most these lines he is I tenth in descent from James but by some he is ninth, and

v was by others ele enth . And since James I . himself both ninth

III th e o f and eleventh in descent from Edward . , Duke Parma is in every generation from the eighteenth to the twenty

’ o f III s n second , both inclusive , Edward . descenda ts, and is , m therefore , sixteenth cousin four ti es removed to himself The latest English King whose lineal descendants are very “ ” n t Of numerous amongst the obili y and England ,

al was Edward III . It would be a c culation worthy of a

c o n eétu re o f Senior Wrangler, to j how many thousands — English speaking people now living in England , her Colonies and ! o f , , possessions and in the nited States 5 America are t a ac ually , and legitimately, descended from the Plant genets

” r o f through that King , and , through his mothe , Isabella

I! o f France, from Saint Louis . , King France . We will give the steps of one line of descent with which we are acquainted and by means of these some slight notion of the

o f vastness the problem may be formed . t I Royal Descen .

Strathallan, Lord Lamington , and the Baroness Nairne (Dowager Marchioness of Lansdowne); also o f the heirs apparent o f the Duke Of Northumberland and Earl De La

Warr, through the Drummonds of the House Of Strathallan . We have now concluded the task we had proposed to our

Of o ne o f selves , tracing the various lines springing from only the many descendants of Edward III . , who were living at the

o f beginning the sixteenth century, viz . , the Lady Margaret

Percy, who was eight generations below that monarch .

exh a usted t recent Without pretending to have the subjec , for

o f l books reference have been consulted but litt e ; we have ,

o ne nevertheless, discovered that from particular descendant o f t Edward III . , arbi rarily chosen , in the eighth generation from him , there are lineally descended no less than one hundred

’ an d . three peers now living , viz , seventeen Dukes , ten

- S ix - six Marquesses, forty Earls , four Viscounts , and twenty

o n e o wn Barons (including Baroness in her right). It will be

are Observed moreover, that many of these descended from

Lady Margaret Percy in more than one way ; Lord Dunmore , ff for instance , being descended in four di erent ways from the

o f first Marchioness Athole, a descendant in the fifth genera tion from Lady Margaret . If the number of titled persons who can trace their descent III from Edward . by this particular line , is SO large, it is probable that the number o funtitled persons who might do ffi the same if they possessed su cient information , is exceed in l g y larger, and that therefore the whole number of Edward ’

III. s ma n thousands descendants now alive , is y . Royal Descen t . 3 3

Of all th ese there is o ne branch whose descent is decidedly

' all he to o t rs . superior , viz , the descendants of Henry VII . and

( d o f . his b een , the aughter Edward IV Not, indeed, that they are likely to value Henry VII . as an ancestor, seeing

de afto h ad that that King f , no pedigree of his own which

’ ’ v o n o r would bear in estigation , either the father s mother s

w de ur : . as e side but Edward IV King j , and all his de sce ndants are nearer to the throne than other descendants of

Edward III .

It is to be Observed also that , since Edward IV . was f two o . descended from sons Edward III , all his progeny

m - clai a double descent from the last named monarch .

Besides the descendants of the Stuarts , more than a hundred

r peers enjoy this twofold Royal Descent through Edwa d IV .

o f They trace through two daughters the Princess Mary ,

’ He n r V II s ! II o f y . daughter, who first married Louis . France ,

o f and afterwards became the wife Charles Brandon , Duke of

uff S olk . E leanor, the younger of these two daughters, married

o f Henry , second Earl Cumberland, and had an only child ,

ff inv e s Lady Margaret Cli ord , whose descendants we have ti ate d d g above , in the third and last main ivision of the descendants of Lady Margaret Percy . The third and fourth

o f - o f Earls Cumberland were her half brothers , sons the second Earl by his second wife . It must therefore be borne in mind that all those families who have already been shown to be descended from Edward III . through Lady Margaret ff Cli ord, have two other descents from the same king, which are superior to the former . t 3 4 Royal Descen , T hus, for instance , it appears already that the present Earl o f Dunmore is descended in at least twelve different

o f ways from Edward III . , eight these being through

Edward IV .

- o f w as great grandmother, the first Duchess Buckingham, the

o f o f only daughter the third Duke Chandos . Next to Lady Kinloss and the other descendants of the late Duke o f Buckingham would come Earl Temple and th e ’ Duke s other nephews and nieces ; and then the descendants o f o f Lady Caroline Leigh , the chief whom is Lord Leigh . - f The heir apparent o Lord Norton belongs also to this branch .

After these , the nearest to the Crown would be the descendants o f d 2 . Of Elizabeth , wife the third Earl of Car igan . Three

Having traced the descendants of Henry Lord Beauchamp , we come to those of his sister, 6 t 3 Royal Descen .

M ar Co untess o Winchilsea B . y , f .

Her daughter, the first Viscountess Weymouth , was grand

1 u From Frances , D chess Of Somerset , descend the present

Ashburnham, Earl Amherst and Lord Hatherton . These all trace through the first Duchess of Northumberland,

fo rm ef Lady Georgiana Spencer . From the , through her so n o f the first Marquess Bath , the present Marquess is

o f o f descended , with the Duke Buccleuch , the Earls

so n From the latter, through her only , the first ,

o f are sprung the Dukes Devonshire and Sutherland , the Earls o f Be ssbo ro u h n Carlisle , g , Spe cer and Granville, Viscounts d Cobham and Clif en , and Lord De Mauley .

o f Next to these and the other descendants Mary,

o f Win c h ilse a Countess , would rank, in nearness to the

We must repeat that we cannot vouch for the above being

s proceedings in the past, justly observes in one of his es ays , that even a state trial “ was merely a murder preceded by the uttering o f certain gibberish and the performance of ” - certain mummeries . As neatly expressed in the well known Jacobite epigram :

— ’ ! Treason doth never prosper What s the reason

Why , when it prospers , none dare call it treason

ure di nitatis o n Obtain a degree, j g , establishing his legitimate descent from Royalty . Some years ago two Cambridge undergraduates , each of whom was a lineal descendant

o f Of Lionel , Duke Clarence , with a better right , there

o f fore , to the throne than any the Lancastrian Henrys , consulted the Registrary o n this su bje ét : but all they could disc over from that fu n étio nary was that certainly in his time a man had received his degree (probably for a handsome “ consideration on account o f being descended from a “ t cer ain King Brent ; though who King Brent was , nobody h seemed to know . Now, owever, the Registrary imagined ,

w as w as the privilege abolished . It probably swept away ,

o 1 8 ! v t ab ut the year 59 , when many curious old ni ersi y t — statu es were repealed among them , the law by which undergraduates were forbidden “ to play marbles in Senate ” Ho use Passage . It was poor consolation for our two young descendants o f the Plantagenets to discover that they had exchanged the right to a degree with (genealogical)honours “ ” fo r the right o f sporting with alley-taws (we have not

Ba rdell P ickwick o u r v . at hand , SO spelling may be wrong), o n ground where that exciting game had been for centuries forbidden !

uant um valeat o f le iti The honour , however, q , claiming g mate descent from the Plantagenet Monarchs , is by no means the monopoly of certain English families now living in

England . Our American cousins are cousins indeed in the ” and large families , with which is concerned, , no d o f be o f oubt, a goodly proportion them are mem rs the vast t race which has sprung from Edward III . It is possible tha Royal D e scen t 4 7 comparatively fe w o f these have been at the pains o f pre serving the family records by which their Royal Descent m : t ight be established for the true citizen of the S ates, like

o ld his undoubted ancestor, the grand gardener, is wont to

’ m a smile at the claims of long descent . But be this as it y ,

o f it cannot be doubted , when we consider the eminence the

English families, scions of which have been settlers in the Western Hemisphere at various periods during the past four centuries , that, among the legions which have multiplied and waxed strong in America, there are many thousands of

to so persons who , if they cared do , might boast with honest

’ pride that the blood of England s ancient kings was rolli ng in their veins ! AP P END I! .
