First International Conference on Saltwater Intrusion and Coastal Aquifers— Monitoring, Modeling, and Management. Essaouira, Morocco, April 23–25, 2001 Saltwater intrusion in the Muravera plain (Italy) E. Lorrai1, G. Lecca1, M.R. Lai2 , A. Cadeddu1 and A. Giacomelli1 1 Centre for Advanced Study, Research and Development in Sardinia (CRS4) Cagliari, Italy 2 Ente Autonomo del Flumendosa (EAF) Cagliari, Italy ABSTRACT The Muravera plain is located in the South-Eastern part of Sardinia, Italy's second largest island, at the mouth of the Flumendosa river, and covers an extension of about 130 km2. The three main centers of the plain (Muravera, Villaputzu and San Vito) comprise a population of circa 13000. The main economic activities in this area are farming, citrus fruit growing, sheep and goat grazing, and tourism. Climate is Mediterranean subtropical, characterized by a strongly variable rainfall regime with annual precipitation fluctuating between 200 and 700 mm. Saltwater encroachment in the coastal aquifer and salinization of the soils was first observed in the 1970s, attributed to a lowering of the groundwater table due to both natural (recurrent droughts, presence of salty geological formations) and anthropic factors, such as overpumping, engineering works, and fish-farming. Currently both the phreatic and confined aquifers are contaminated with saltwater. Remedial measures being considered by the Ente Autonomo del Flumendosa (EAF), one of the subjects responsable for the management of water resources in the area, include artificial groundwater recharge, creation of hydrodynamic barriers, and establishment of a district irrigation network. In order to improve the understanding of the dynamics of the degradation of the aquifer and to support these remediation strategies, a research study for the simulation of the saltwater intrusion process by means of physical- mathematical flow and transport model is necessary.

  • Pier Virgilio Arrigoni the Discovery of the Sardinian Flora
Pier Virgilio Arrigoni The discovery of the Sardinian Flora (XVIII-XIX Centuries) Abstract Arrigoni, P. V.: The discovery of the Sardinian Flora (XVIII-XIX Centuries). — Bocconea 19: 7-31. 2006. — ISSN 1120-4060. The history of the floristic exploration of Sardinia mainly centres round the works of G.G. Moris, who in the first half of the XIX century described most of the floristic patrimony of the island. But it is important to know the steps he took in his census, the areas he explored, his publications, motivations and conditions under which he wrote the "Stirpium sardoarum elenchus" and the three volumes of "Flora sardoa", a work moreover which he left incomplete. Merit is due to Moris for bringing the attention of many collectors, florists and taxonomists to the Flora of the Island, individuals who in his foot-steps helped to complete and update the floristic inventory of the island. Research into the history of our knowledge of the Sardinian Flora relies heavily on the analysis of botanical publications, but many other sources (non- botanical texts, chronicles of the period, correspondence) also furnish important information. Finally, the names, dates and collection localities indicated on the specimens preserved in the most important herbaria were fundamental in reconstructing the itineraries of the sites Moris visited. All these sources allowed us to clarify several aspects of the expeditions, floristic col- lections and results of his studies. The "discovery phase" of Sardinian Flora can be considered over by the end of the XIX century with the publication of the "Compendium" by Barbey (1884-1885) and "Flora d'Italia" by Fiori & Paoletti (1896-1908).

  • Salt Intrusion Phenomena in the South East Coast of Sardinia(""'')
315 G. BARBIERI - G. BARROCU - C. POLEDRINI - G. URAS ('') SALT INTRUSION PHENOMENA IN THE SOUTH EAST COAST OF SARDINIA(""'') SUMMARY Alarming phenomena of sea water intrusion have been detected in rec ent years in the delta plain of the rivers Flumendosa and Picocca in South East Sardinia. The coastal aquifers in the Northern part of the plain are not sufficiently recharged by the Flumendosa runoff since the river was dammed upstream for the purpose of generating hydroelectric power and supplying water to the area of Cagliari, South Central Sardinia. Other dams have recently been planned just upstream of the deltas of the Flumendosa and Picocca in order to transfer elsewhere a considerable proportion of the local resources. Systematic research is in progress compris ing hydrogeological, geophysical and hydrochemical surveys aimed at deter mining the characteristics of the aquifers and studying the evolution of salt intrusion. 1. INTRODUCTION Alarming phenomena of salt intrusion have been detected in recent years in South-East Sardinia between the promontories of Porto Corallo, to the North, and Capo Ferrato to the South (Fig. 1). The effects are more marked in the Muravera area near the delta of the River Flumendosa. In this paper, we present an analysis of the results of the implementation of the ETIS during the period 2013–2016, in the Italian tourist destination of South Sardinia. While the implementation of ETIS constitutes a significant advancement in Italy, and more widely in Europe, our findings reveal that an adaptive management approach is necessary for achieving the anticipated objectives and adapting these standardized indicators to different territorial contexts. Difficulties were encountered in both data collection and stakeholders’ involvement in the implementation process. Insufficient knowledge, and familiarity with the complex technical aspects of the indicator toolkit among primary stakeholders, was another constraint associated with its implementation.
