The main citrus centre of Sardinia rises in the south-east edge of the island: dazzling expanses of sand between the sea and lagoons are guarded by towers that witness pirate attacks. The territory of Muravera, the main centre of the region Sarrabus, populated by over five thousand inhabitants, extends along the Flumendosa valley, from the slopes of Mount Nieddu to the mouth of the river. In one of the most beautiful Mediterranean areas we meet jewel-like beaches, ponds to explore by mountain bike or on horseback, the Baccu Arrodas forest, perfect for trekking among holm-oaks and strawberry trees, and citrus gardens, in one of the most productive agricultural centres of the Island. The coast The coast stretches to the south of the village for tens of kilometers, starting from the quartz beach of San Giovanni. The coastal itinerary continues in the dunes of Colostrai, covered with sea lilies, and in the two kilometers of fine bronze-colored sand of Feraxi. Behind the sandy shores lie three of the five Muravera lagoons, wildlife oases inhabited by avocets, knights of , flamingos and, in passing, storks, and fish farms. Close to the granite spur Capo Ferrato, there are the secluded coves of Portu de s’Illixi, Sa Figu and Porto Pirastu. The white beach "Iba de ziu Franciscu" begins Costa Rei, the longest stretch of sandy coast in eastern Sardinia: almost eight kilometers up to the rock of Peppino (and two more territory). Spectacular in size and natural pools, it is divided into sections with various names, including Piscina Rei. Sacked by the Saracens for centuries, the coast was defended by the Spaniards (XVI-XVIII century) with building the towers of the Dieci Cavalli, Salinas and Monti Ferru, from which the whole territory can be admired. The village The churches of Santa Lucia, Santa Maria and San Giovanni Battista were built at the beginning of the 15th century in the "villae" of Carruti, Sorrui and Petrera - today the oldest quarter; in the 16th century the parish church of San Nicola di Bari was built in late Gothic style. In village centre you also find "sa domu de is candelajus", a stately house that now is an ethnographic museum, the portico Petretto, and the Zedda house, where a Roman cistern was discovered. The valley The Flumendosa valley is extremely fertile, and farmed with rice and, above all, with citrus fruits, that are protagonists in May (since 1961) of the citrus sagra, the event of the year, during which you can also enjoy breads, cheeses like "su callu e' casu axedu", honey, wines and cakes. Agricultural activities are accompanied by artisanal ones, such as wicker and reed braiding, weaving, the goldsmith's art with filigree technique, the production of objects in wood, ceramic and copper. Archaeological walks Around the village you can have suggestive archaeological walks among the various megalithic complexes of the final Neolithic (3200-2800 BC): the 53 menhirs of Cuili Piras, arranged in alignments from three to five, deeply embedded in the ground and placed in relation to the positions of sunrise and sunset of sun and moon, almost a 'prehistoric clock'; the menhir complex at the foot of the proto-nuraghe Scalas, and the Baracca Su Entu sites, near the pond of Piscina Rei, where the Roman villages of Porto Sipicio and Susalei were sited. The domus de Janas of Monte Nai also date back to the Neolithic. Next to it the Punic fortress of Baccu arose. Various nuraghi date back to the Bronze Age, including Orcu and Ponzianu, with a square plan, the Arcu ziu Marinu tomb, in a taurine form, and the necropolis of the Murgioni house, with various menhirs.
