My honor roll has 525 victories. Hence the title of this book, Merckx 525. Th ose 525 victories have given me great satisfaction, have made me who I am today. I am proud of those wins, but I am equally proud of my life after my cycling career. And after more than 65 years, I realize only too well that my great good fortune in those victories rested not just with the bicycle but also in the power and love of the people who surrounded me all those years and who still do today. I therefore dedicate this beautiful book to them. I could always count on the support of my family and am very grateful to my parents that I got 5 the chance to be a bicycle racer. Both worked hard for their children to secure a good future for them. Along with my sister, Micheline, and my brother, Michel, I had a happy childhood in a warm nest. Th ey were always there to support me. Sabrina and Axel: my greatest pride. I missed them so often. When I had to leave to race abroad, it was often with tears in my eyes and pain in my heart. But I am proud to see them today as strong adults making their way through life and achieving their dreams. One of those two would win La Primavera, Milan–San Remo. That was the clear prediction of the team leaders on the eve of springtime’s fi rst big one-day race. Lower down on the list of favorites compiled by the sports managers, the names Ward Sels and Bernard Van De Kerckhove—the only Belgians mentioned—also appeared. No Eddy Merckx. It rather looked as if everyone was a favorite except Eddy Merckx. Admittedly, who in heaven’s name was Eddy Merckx? Merckx, just 20 years old, had in 1966 only just started on his second year as a pro. In the year of his debut with Solo-Superia, he had already shown glimpses of his class. Experts realized that this young man was cut out for greatness. And Rik Van Looy, up to then the Emperor of one-day events, knew it too. But no one at this stage expected a resounding victory from young Merckx in his fi rst international top classic race. Not the team leaders, not the journalists, not his colleagues. Not even Merckx’s parents. “Who would have believed that of our Eddy?” was what father Merckx was reported to have said after his son’s victory on San Remo’s Via Roma. Merckx rides in the black-and-white checkered Peugeot-Michelin jersey. Quietly confi dent, he lines up in Milan on March 20. Earlier that month during the Paris–Nice stage race, he had shown that he 44 could hold his own in all the disciplines of bike racing. Jacques Anquetil won Paris–Nice, but Merckx came in fourth. The greats have therefore been warned and realize that this young chap has a lot to offer. But to give the great one-day racers the go-by in a 288-km classic? No, that would still be rather too early for Merckx. It’s sunny but very cold at the start. A tailwind will push the peloton onward to San Remo and the fi nish line on Via Roma. The race will only get going properly along the Riviera. In Savona, a place that later in Merckx’s career will acquire a painful connotation, Merckx, Felice Gimondi, Rudi Altig, and eight others set chase in pursuit of a small group of leaders. On the Capo Berta, Merckx has a go. Now the others have to join in too, including Van Looy, who fi ghts a match within a match with his young rival. At stake: the title of best racing cyclist of Belgium. A small group of 18 riders is the fi rst to reach the Poggio, the last hump before the fi nish. This group includes Raymond Poulidor, Italo Zilioli, Herman Van Springel, Adriano Durante, and Michele Dancelli. The young Merckx is not impressed and twice tries to break away, though without success; he is brought back by Durante and Dancelli. It is going to be a sprint with a limited group on the Via Roma. Or will it? 3 001-224_Merckx_US_FNL.indd 44 5/24/12 2:44 PM Van Springel ventures an ultimate breakaway on the fl at, in the streets of San Remo. However, near the fountain he is challenged. It is the Dutchman Hubertus Zilverberg who gets past Van Springel and starts on a furious sprint. The fi nish is close. Horribly close. Although he doesn’t want to be taken by surprise, Merckx does not immediately react to this push by Zilverberg. It is the keen Italians who do the job for him. Merckx sticks to their wheels and waits. And waits. “Waiting was more diffi cult than the actual winning,” he explains afterward. At 150 meters from the fi nish line, Merckx continues full speed on the left-hand side of the road with Van Springel who, despite his late breakaway in the fi nal stretch, has quickly gathered speed. Durante and Dancelli sprint on the farthest right of the road. Who makes it? Merckx. Durante has just been beaten by a youngster. Merckx is over the moon. Milan–San Remo: The fi rst great classic victory is in the books.

That would make a good trivia question at the cycling club’s annual dinner, and it’s sure to provide fodder for unending debate. Think about it: How many of us in America know enough cycling history to even come up with five good names? Sure, you could list the men who have won five Tours de France: Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Induráin. (I’m omitting Armstrong, whose seven victories were officially annulled.) But that’s only four names. And Le Tour, of course, is only one race. Most of us don’t know our cycling like we know our baseball. Any baseball fan past infancy knows the names Ruth and Gehrig, Mantle and Mays, Clemens and Bonds. But American cycling fans would be hard- pressed, I think, to remember — let alone spell — the names Joop Zoetemelk and Roger de Vlaeminck. Both of those men, as it turns out, probably belong on any list of all-time greats. Zoetemelk was a Dutch ironman who started and finished the Tour 16 times (and won it once). De Vlaeminck was a Belgian steam engine who won the brutal Paris-Roubaix four times, the marathon Milano-Sanremo three times, and Tirreno-Adriatico, the Race of the Two Seas, six times. I know all of this thanks to CyclingRanking.com, a well-researched and well-documented site that attempts to list, in order, the greatest professional men’s cyclists of all time.The site is a labor of love by a Dutch family that started out as a kitchen-table exercise in the 1970s, and it will humble even the most studious cycling fans.

    1 Torna il grande ciclismo in Riviera con il “Trofeo Laigueglia”: ecco il percorso di Redazione 16 Gennaio 2017 – 10:23 Laigueglia. Manca ormai meno di un mese all’appuntamento del 12 febbraio quando, per la cinquataquattresima volta, il Trofeo Laigueglia riporterà in Riviera il grande ciclismo. La storia della classica di inizio stagione è ricca di nomi che hanno contribuito alla popolarità dello sport delle due ruote e per rendersene conto basta scorre l’albo d’oro nel quale figurano, tra gli altri, Guido Neri (primo nell’edizione inaugurale del 1964), Marino Vigna, Franco Bitossi, Michele Dancelli, Eddy Merckx, Roger De Vlaeminck, Giuseppe Saronni, Johan Mussew, Michele Bartoli, Filippo Pozzato, fino ad arrivare alle ultime due edizioni vinte da Davide Cimolai (2015) e da Andrea Fedi, ultimo a trionfare sul traguardo della Via Roma. Anche quest’anno la gara di classe UCI 1.HC, organizzata dal Comune di Laigueglia curata sotto l’aspetto tecnico dal GS Emilia, proporrà un tracciato particolarmente interessante e selettivo che contribuirà a rendere l’appuntamento ancor più spettacolare. Come vuole la tradizione il percorso del Trofeo Laigueglia, con il suoi 192 chilometri, andrà ad interessare gran parte della Provincia di Savona a testimonianza del forte interesse degli organizzatori a valorizzare il contesto territoriale.     COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE Jeudi 16 juillet 2020 Exposition « Tour 64, le duel Anquetil - Poulidor : histoire de héros » À l’occasion du passage du Tour de France dans notre département les 11 & 12 septembre, le Conseil départemental du Puy-de-Dôme vous invite à découvrir l’exposition « Tour 64, le duel Anquetil – Poulidor : histoire de héros » du 20 juillet au 20 septembre à la Maison de Site du puy de Dôme (départ du Panoramique des Dômes – en visite libre). De cette 20ème étape du Tour de France 64, on se souvient rarement du nom du vainqueur au sommet du puy de Dôme, Julio Jimenez. En revanche, le duel entre Jacques Anquetil et Raymond Poulidor fait partie de l'histoire. Cette année-là, la lutte que se livrent les deux grands champions sur le Tour de France tient en haleine le pays tout entier. Le dénouement interviendra au cours de la 20ème étape (le 12 juillet 1964) lors de l'ascension du puy de Dôme avec un coude à coude épique entre les deux hommes. Dans la montée, les Espagnols Julio Jimenez et Federico Bahamontes s'échappent, alors que Jacques Anquetil et Raymond Poulidor restent au coude à coude un peu derrière. Mais à 800 mètres de l’arrivée, Jacques Anquetil craque et Raymond Poulidor en profite pour démarrer. L'écart entre les deux coureurs se creuse à vue d'œil mais pas suffisamment pour que Poulidor puisse espérer remporter le Tour de France. Au final, Raymond Poulidor ne reprend que 42 secondes. Il laisse Jacques Anquetil conserver son Maillot Jaune et remporter son 5ème et dernier Tour de France.

INTRODUCTION The Tour de France is ”Grand Tour” equivalent of the Vuelta Espana or the Giro di Italia. However, the Tour de France is the most popular race in the world without hesitation. In the mind of racers, it is more important to win a Tour de France than a world championship. Win Tour de France shows polyvalent qualities of the winner. II. HISTORY A. Creation of the Tour de France The foundations of the Tour de France takes place on a national French scandal. At the end of the year 1984, Alfred Dreyfus who was captain in the French army at this time and by the way was Jew, was convicted to have given secret information to Germans. After several years and several justice judgements, it was proved that Alfred Dreyfus was not the author of the supposed high teason. However, France was separated in two parts: the dreyfusards and the antidreyfusards. The second important fact was that at this time, it was existing only one sport newspaper named ”Le Velo”. Pierre Giffard, the editor-in-chief, was politically committed and was writing in his sheet to denfend Dreyfus. However, his newspaper was financed through the advertisement by car industrials who were antidreyfusard. The Comte de Dion, who was the representative of car industrials, chose Henry Desgrange in order to create a rival newspaper named ”L’Auto-Velo”. A feature of this sheet is that it was published on a yellow paper which will be the colour of the leader jersey of the Tour de France.
