Simplex Racing Gears Gears, Riders and Machines 25 March 2015 Lucien Juy – Founder of Simplex • Owned bicycle shop in Dijon • Made his first derailleur in 1928 – named it (and his company) Simplex as a bit of a dig at the competition whose products were thought overly complicated. • Prolific innovator – many Simplex patents over the course of his lifetime and now widely adopted by most manufacturers. • Attached his name to many of his products, e.g. Juy51, LJ23, Super LJ, JuyRecord Key Dates • 1928 – First Simplex derailleur • 1933 – Production 40,000 units. 4 French National Championship wins • 1936 – Antonin Magne wins World Championship, giving name to Champion du Monde derailleur • 1947 – Jean Robic wins first post-war Tour de France, giving name to Tour de France gear • 1962 – Plastic! • 1990s – Gear production ceases Champion du Monde Gear • Single roller gear with chain tension provided by sprung arm. • Sprung ‘plunger’ operation – spring pushes chain towards larger cogs (lower gears) and lever operated cable pulls chain towards smaller cogs (higher gears) • Produced from 1930s to 1940s • Disadvantaged by poor ‘chain wrap’ over cogs – greater chance of chain slipping or ‘jumping’ over cogs. Limited “range”. Helyett with Champion du Monde Gear • Very similar to the bikes used by the Helyett team in the late 1930s. Notable riders include René Vietto who rode for Helyett until 1944 and had his portrait on the seat tube on some Helyett Spéciale models Rene Vietto – French Folk Hero • Good racing cyclist – leader of Helyett team in 1930s and late 1940s • Famous for sitting by the roadside – doing well in the 1934 Tour de France but compelled to hand his wheel over to French team leader Antonin Magne who subsequently won the race. -

That would make a good trivia question at the cycling club’s annual dinner, and it’s sure to provide fodder for unending debate. Think about it: How many of us in America know enough cycling history to even come up with five good names? Sure, you could list the men who have won five Tours de France: Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Induráin. (I’m omitting Armstrong, whose seven victories were officially annulled.) But that’s only four names. And Le Tour, of course, is only one race. Most of us don’t know our cycling like we know our baseball. Any baseball fan past infancy knows the names Ruth and Gehrig, Mantle and Mays, Clemens and Bonds. But American cycling fans would be hard- pressed, I think, to remember — let alone spell — the names Joop Zoetemelk and Roger de Vlaeminck. Both of those men, as it turns out, probably belong on any list of all-time greats. Zoetemelk was a Dutch ironman who started and finished the Tour 16 times (and won it once). De Vlaeminck was a Belgian steam engine who won the brutal Paris-Roubaix four times, the marathon Milano-Sanremo three times, and Tirreno-Adriatico, the Race of the Two Seas, six times. I know all of this thanks to CyclingRanking.com, a well-researched and well-documented site that attempts to list, in order, the greatest professional men’s cyclists of all time.The site is a labor of love by a Dutch family that started out as a kitchen-table exercise in the 1970s, and it will humble even the most studious cycling fans. -

COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE Jeudi 16 juillet 2020 Exposition « Tour 64, le duel Anquetil - Poulidor : histoire de héros » À l’occasion du passage du Tour de France dans notre département les 11 & 12 septembre, le Conseil départemental du Puy-de-Dôme vous invite à découvrir l’exposition « Tour 64, le duel Anquetil – Poulidor : histoire de héros » du 20 juillet au 20 septembre à la Maison de Site du puy de Dôme (départ du Panoramique des Dômes – en visite libre). De cette 20ème étape du Tour de France 64, on se souvient rarement du nom du vainqueur au sommet du puy de Dôme, Julio Jimenez. En revanche, le duel entre Jacques Anquetil et Raymond Poulidor fait partie de l'histoire. Cette année-là, la lutte que se livrent les deux grands champions sur le Tour de France tient en haleine le pays tout entier. Le dénouement interviendra au cours de la 20ème étape (le 12 juillet 1964) lors de l'ascension du puy de Dôme avec un coude à coude épique entre les deux hommes. Dans la montée, les Espagnols Julio Jimenez et Federico Bahamontes s'échappent, alors que Jacques Anquetil et Raymond Poulidor restent au coude à coude un peu derrière. Mais à 800 mètres de l’arrivée, Jacques Anquetil craque et Raymond Poulidor en profite pour démarrer. L'écart entre les deux coureurs se creuse à vue d'œil mais pas suffisamment pour que Poulidor puisse espérer remporter le Tour de France. Au final, Raymond Poulidor ne reprend que 42 secondes. Il laisse Jacques Anquetil conserver son Maillot Jaune et remporter son 5ème et dernier Tour de France. -

INTRODUCTION The Tour de France is ”Grand Tour” equivalent of the Vuelta Espana or the Giro di Italia. However, the Tour de France is the most popular race in the world without hesitation. In the mind of racers, it is more important to win a Tour de France than a world championship. Win Tour de France shows polyvalent qualities of the winner. II. HISTORY A. Creation of the Tour de France The foundations of the Tour de France takes place on a national French scandal. At the end of the year 1984, Alfred Dreyfus who was captain in the French army at this time and by the way was Jew, was convicted to have given secret information to Germans. After several years and several justice judgements, it was proved that Alfred Dreyfus was not the author of the supposed high teason. However, France was separated in two parts: the dreyfusards and the antidreyfusards. The second important fact was that at this time, it was existing only one sport newspaper named ”Le Velo”. Pierre Giffard, the editor-in-chief, was politically committed and was writing in his sheet to denfend Dreyfus. However, his newspaper was financed through the advertisement by car industrials who were antidreyfusard. The Comte de Dion, who was the representative of car industrials, chose Henry Desgrange in order to create a rival newspaper named ”L’Auto-Velo”. A feature of this sheet is that it was published on a yellow paper which will be the colour of the leader jersey of the Tour de France. -

The Outer Line The External Perspective On Pro Cycling The Curioushttps://www.theouterline.com Case of Mathieu van der Poel Mathieu van der Poel, the current Cyclocross world champion, 2018 Mountain bike cross-country bronze medalist, runner up at the 2018 European race road championships, and 2019 Amstel Gold winner, is the odds-on favorite to win the upcoming 2019 Road World Championships in Yorkshire, England. Considering “VDP’s” huge natural talent and strength, his skills across multiple disciplines and the flashes of brilliance which he already demonstrated during his limited appearances on the road, this makes complete sense. Despite agreement among bettors, pundits, and rivals that he is the man to beat in Yorkshire, it is becoming increasingly odd and curious that the Dutch star has never competed in the sport’s marquee event, the Tour de France, or any of the other grand tours, and only one of the traditional “monument” events (the 2019 Tour de Flanders). And not only that, he doesn’t seem to currently even have any specific plans to make an appearance in the near future, outside of his grandfather (the great French rider Raymond Poulidor) stating “I think he wants to do the Tour, who knows.” While he is arguably the road cycling’s hottest prospect, van der Poel plans to focus on the XC Mountain Bike race at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This implies that he is postponing his Tour debut until at least the summer of 2021, when he will be 26 and a half years old – late for a superstar to be making their inaugural grand tour appearance.
