Behind and beyond the crisis Guglielmo Carchedi, International Socialism n°132, October 11 The 2007 financial crisis has reignited the discussion on crises, their origin and possible remedies.1 At present the most influential thesis on the left sees the crisis as caused by underconsumption and recommends Keynesian policies as a solution. This paper argues that we should understand the crisis from the perspective of Karl Marx’s “law of the tendential fall in the average rate of profit” (ARP), for short “the law”. Its characteristic feature is that technological progress decreases the rate of profit, rather than increasing it as is usually assumed. Let us see why. The law in a nutshell The law’s essential features are as follows: (1) Capitalists compete against each other by introducing new means of production incorporating new technologies. This is not the only form of competition but it is by far the most important one for understanding the dynamics of the crisis.2 (2) The new means of production increase the efficiency (output of use values per unit of capital invested) of the technological leaders in the productive sectors. (3) At the same time, the new technologies are designed to replace labourers with means of production. Therefore the technological leaders’ proportion of capital invested in means of production relative to that in labour power, the organic composition of capital, increases. Unemployment follows. (4) Since only labour creates value, less labour power employed means less (surplus) value created by high‐ technology capitals. All other things being equal, the ARP falls: ‘‘The rate of profit does not fall because labour becomes less productive, but because it becomes more productive”.3 Notice that it is the rate of profit and not the mass of profits that falls. -

Thoughts on Libertarian Municipalism
Thoughts on Libertarian Municipalism Murray Bookchin Age, chronic illnesses, and the summer heat oblige me to remain at home—hence I am very sorry that I cannot participate in your conference on libertarian municipalism. I would like, however— thanks to Janet Biehl, who will read these remarks—to welcome you to Vermont and to wish you well during the course of your discussions over the next three days. Some issues have recently arisen in discussions of libertarian municipalism, and I would like to offer my views on them. One of the most important involves the distinction that should be drawn between libertarian municipalism and communitarianism, a distinction that is often lost in discussions of politics. Communitarianism By communitarianism, I refer to movements and ideologies that seek to transform society by creating so-called alternative economic and living situations such as food cooperatives, health centers, schools, printing workshops, community centers, neighborhood farms, “squats,” unconventional lifestyles, and the like. Allowing for the works of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, the notable spokespersons of communitarianism have been Martin Buber, Harry Boyte, and Colin Ward, among many others. The word communitarian is often interchangeable with the word cooperative, a form of production and exchange that is attractive because the work is not only amiably collective but worker-controlled or worker-managed. At most, communitarianism seeks to gently edge social development away from privately owned enterprises—banks, corporations, supermarkets, factories, and industrial systems of agriculture —and the lifeways to which they give rise, into collectively owned enterprises and values. It does not seek to create a power center that will overthrow capitalism; it seeks rather to outbid it, outprice it, or outlast it, often by presenting a moral obstacle to the greed and evil that many find in a bourgeois economy. -

THE GLOBAL JUSTICE AND SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT AND THE WORLD SOCIAL FORUM : A BACKGROUNDER Peter Waterman he WSF is probably best identified with the recent international wave of protest T known as the 'anti-globalisation movement'. While intimately interrelated with the latter, the WSF is just one emanation of this much more general phenomenon and process. How can these and their inter-relationship be best understood ? It is possible to make a 19th-20th century comparison, with the relationship between trade unions or labour parties on the one hand and 'the labour movement' on the other. But the labour movement, whilst obviously broader and looser than any particular institution, and having international expression, consisted largely of other, primarily national, institutions (co-operatives, women's organisations, publications). The WSF is an essentially international event (or an expanding series of such). And on the other hand, we have an essentially international movement that might not even (yet ?) recognise itself as such. So we are confronted with two new social phenomena — of the period of globalisation, that are both international and global, and that have a novel relationship with each other. The WSF — promoted by an identifiable group of Brazilian, French and other non-governmental organisations, trade unions and individuals — is itself linked organically to the more general movement. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Columbia University Academic Commons Reflections on the Venezuelan Transition from a Capitalist Representative to a Socialist Participatory Democracy What Are Planners to Do? by Clara Irazábal and John Foley Venezuela is experiencing a transitional political process in which the government and the majority of Venezuelans want to move from a capitalist representative democracy to a more socialist participatory democracy. This transition is enmeshed in complexities, contradictions, and political opposition. Reflection on the experience of accompanying neighborhood groups in local decision making in Caracas from 2002 to 2006 suggests that planning practitioners and scholars can be allies in the grassroots processes of empowerment and self-determination of local communities and advocates and active agents in the “trickling-up” of greater planning participation to upper levels of government. Martínez Abstract How do squatters’ movements make a difference in urban politics? Their singularity in European cities has often been interpreted according to the major notion of ‘autonomy’. However, despite the recent upsurge of studies about squatting (Cattaneo et al. 2014, Katsiaficas 2006, Martínez et al. 2018, Van der Steen et al. 2014), there has not been much clarification of its theoretical, historical and political significance. Autonomism has also been identified as one of the main ideological sources of the recent global justice and anti-austerity movements (Flesher 2014) after being widely diffused among European squatters for more than four decades, which prompts a question about the meaning of its legacy. In this article, I first examine the political background of autonomism as a distinct identity among radical movements in Europe in general (Flesher et al. 2013, Wennerhag et al. 2018), and the squatters in particular—though not often explicitly defined. Secondly, I stress the social, feminist and anti-capitalist dimensions of autonomy that stem from the multiple and specific struggles in which squatters were involved over different historical periods. These aspects have been overlooked or not sufficiently examined by the literature on squatting movements. By revisiting relevant events and discourses of the autonomist tradition linked to squatting in Italy, Germany and Spain, its main traits and some contradictions are presented. Although political contexts indicate different emphases in each case, some common origins and transnational exchanges justify an underlying convergence and its legacies over time. -

HOME VIEWS & REVIEWS AUTHORS INDEX SEARCH SUBSCRIBE No. 19, July 1, 2010 The Global Justice Movement Geoffrey Pleyers Department of Sociology and Anthropology Belgian Foundation for Scientific Research (FNRS) Abstract: After providing a brief overview of the global justice movement history, this article analyzes the main argument raised by its activists to oppose the neoliberal ideology, as notably asserted by the shifts in the discourses of some G20 leaders. Activists however call attention to the gap between the speeches of the G20 leaders and the measures actually implemented. Accordingly, global justice activists have decided to focus on seeking concrete outcomes through the following: specialized advocacy networks, empowerment at the local level and alliances with progressive regimes. Since the first World Social Forum in 2001, “Social Forums” have become major events of the global justice movement (also called “alter- globalization”). Similar meetings have been organized at the local, national, continental, and global level. They allow activists to share their experience, successes, and challenges, to discuss alternative practices or policies and to elaborate common strategies on issues ranging from local community life to global warming and finance regulation. 2 The first US Social Forum (USSF) was held in 2007 in Atlanta. Some 10,000 activists attended it from a wide range of political sympathies, including the non-profit sector, local movements, alternative liberals, anarchist networks, and a strong participation of Pleyers, GSJ 19(1 July 2010), 1 minorities (Smith & Juris, 2008). -

His doctoral dissertation was written in 1971 about the Christian-Marxist dialogue of the 1960' s and published in 1973 in DUsseldorf as Marxistischer Atheismus und die biblische Botschaft von der Rechtfertigung des Gottlosen. In 1979, his book Eurokommu nismus�-Weg oder Irrweg was published in Munich. A new "ghost" seems to be stalking in Europe, and particularly in Eastern Europe, in the shape of civil rightists, dissidents, and defenders of human rights. The Polish writer A. Szczypiorski said two years ago that "no other political figur= has had such a flourishing career in European intellectual life during the last few y=ars as tqe dis- 1 sident." And clearly this career is giving increasingly frequent headaches to govern- ments in Eastern Europe. -
The Sociopathology of Social Collectives
THE PATHOLOGIES OF SOCIAL COLLECTIVES Maurice Yolles Centre for the Creation of Coherent Change and Knowledge Liverpool John Moores University, UK Intended for ISSS Conference, Tokyo 2007 ABSTRACT Social collectives are today increasingly more complex than they were in ancient Greece. As a result their coherence suffers and their pathologies become more apparent. A theory that can create generic models of pathologies be will be explored in terms of the knowledge cybernetics schema. One of the outlying consequences of such a model is the realisation that many social collectives are sociopathic, working for their own perceived benefit (and sometimes duplicitously so) against the viable interests of the society in which they exist. This is not just a problem of ethics and many might suggest, but extends to ideology that ethics serve. INTRODUCTION In this paper we shall explore the pathologies and sociopathologies that can develop, using theory that comes out of the knowledge cybernetics paradigm. Modern theory of social collectives argues that they are not, as the old theory would have told us, stable structures that manage to maintain equilibrium, but rather they survive as bounded unstable structured, maintaining their survival because they use energy to maintain their organisation and reverse the entropic processes that erode them. This process is also represented in the theory of viable systems, in which the ability of the system to survive depends on its ability to create the requisite variety (Ashby, 1964) that equally responds to the variety it experiences from the environment. -

Just before his death, he published, along with close allies, a call for ‘workers and the people’ to establish a ‘fifth international’ to coordinate support to progressive movements. To honor Samir Amin’s invaluable contribution to world-systems scholarship, we are pleased to present our readers with a selection of essays responding to Amin’s final message for today’s anti-systemic movements. Lesley Sklair London School of Economics [email protected] The idea of a Fifth International has been around for some time and the historical record is not encouraging. For the past few years I have been wrestling with an apparent contradiction in the work of all of us on the Left. On the one hand, our research demonstrates how powerful and successful consumerist capitalism and its integral system of ‘nation-states’ has been, never more so than in its current neoliberal/social democratic forms (by which I mean ‘New Labour’ in the UK and elsewhere).
