I also wish to salute the talent of Xavier Dolan, who, after triumphing and inspiring a whole generation of young filmmakers by winning the 2014 Jury Prize, will be the first Quebecer to be member of the jury, a prestigious role, at this year’s festival. Roy’s short film reach the Directors’ Fortnight selection, along with the feature film Fatima, a France/Québec co-production with Serge Noël - Possibles Média. This year, Québec filmmakers have attained unprecedented recognition at Cannes - with Denis Villeneuve and his feature film Sicario vying for the Palme d’Or, and Xavier Dolan’s historic selection to serve on the feature film jury. It would be unthinkable not to mention the homage being paid to one of Québec’s film classics, a hard-hitting oeuvre that has influenced countless generations of filmmakers: Michel Brault’s Orders. This year, Orders is showing as part of Cannes Classics; in 1975 some 40 years ago at the Festival, it brought home the Best Director Award. This is an amazing time for Québec’s young filmmakers, whose vision and convictions are once again making an impact on the international scene. There is no doubt that these artists, bursting with creativity as they are, contribute enormously to taking our film arts to the next level. Again this year, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) is pleased to welcome our filmmakers under the Espace Québec umbrella and to support them in establishing key relationships with foreign partners. To this end, our SODEC_LAB_IMMERSION CANNES 2015 program - a learning lab we are enormously proud of - will showcase five promising, talented, young producers, in a partnership with Les Offices jeunesse internationaux du Québec (LOJIQ). SODEC will also be present at the Marché du Film, welcoming and assisting Québec’s many producers, directors, distributors and film industry professionals to make the most of their experience at the event.     Song and Nationalism in Quebec [originally published in Contemporary French Civilization, Volume XXIV, No. 1, Spring /Summer 2000] The québécois national mythology is dependent on oral culture for sustenance. This orality, while allowing a popular transmission of central concepts, also leaves the foundations of a national francophone culture exposed to influence by the anglophone forces that dominate world popular culture. A primary example is song, which has been linked to a nationalist impulse in Quebec for over thirty years. What remains of that linkage today? Economic, cultural, political and linguistic pressures have made the role of song as an ethnic and national unifier increasingly ambiguous, and reflect uncertainties about the Quebec national project itself, as the Quebec economy becomes reflective of global trends toward supranational control. A discussion of nationalism must be based on a shared understanding of the term. Anthony Smith distinguishes between territorial and ethnic definitions: territorially defined nations can point to a specific territory and rule by law; ethnies, on the other hand, add a collective name, a myth of descent, a shared history, a distinctive culture and a sense of solidarity to the territorial foundation. If any element among these is missing, it must be invented. This “invention” should not be seen as a negative or devious attempt to distort the present or the past; it is part of the necessary constitution of a “story” which can become the foundation for a national myth-structure. As Smith notes: "What matters[...] is not the authenticity of the historical record, much less any attempt at 'objective' methods of historicizing, but the poetic, didactic and integrative purposes which that record is felt to disclose" (25).

    • p R o F I L E • onique Mercure, one of, if not the most internationally renowned Mfrancophone actress from Canada, came close to never having an acting career at all. First trained as a musician, then for a long time content as a verypri­ vate wife and mother, she came to acting later in life than most of her contem­ poraries. Born Monique Hemond in the Mont­ real of the Great Depression, in 1930, she remembers her lower-middle-class neighborhood of Snowdon with affec­ tion. Standing out in her mind ate the in­ fluences of her father, a poor bank teller most of his life, her mother who loved to play the piano, and a peculiat older aunt who played cello for the Montreal Sym­ phony Orchestra and who encouraged the bright lO-yeat-old Monique into a classical music cateer. Scenes etched into her childhood memory: listening for hours to dramas and operas on the radio; her uncle bring­ ing her to see a Shakespeate play at His Majesty's Theatre (now gone) on Guy Street in an English language she did not yet understand; being called on to recite poems in front of the class because she had such a cleat and distinct voice; leatning to sing and to perform. Et pour cause ! Sa tignasse bouclée, son regard pétillant et frondeur, sa voix riche et l’originalité de ses créations charment les Québécois, mais aussi la Francophonie, depuis maintenant plus de 50 ans. Auteur-compositeur, musicien et interprète québécois, Robert Charlebois est un pionnier du rock canadien-français. Grâce à lui, qualifié à juste titre de monument de la chanson québécoise tels Félix Leclerc et Gilles Vigneault, la chanson d’expression française s’est affirmée et épanouie. Sa première œuvre, La boulée, Robert Charlebois l’a composée à l’âge de 16 ans. Elle lui a valu, en 1965, le Grand Prix du Festival du disque, la première des innombrables distinctions qu’il recevra au cours de sa carrière. Quelques mois plus tard, son premier album a remporté le prix du meilleur disque de l’année et lui a valu d’être proclamé découverte de l’année dans la catégorie chansonnier à l’émission Jeunesse oblige diffusée à Radio-Canada. La suite de son ascension a rapidement confirmé que la découverte de l’année était un artiste authentique à la créativité inépuisable et aux talents incomparables.
