L'hommage À Monsieur Robert Charlebois Récipiendaire D Notes d’allocution pour le recteur Denis Harrisson à l’occasion de l’hommage à monsieur Robert Charlebois Récipiendaire d’un doctorat honoris causa de l’UQO Le dimanche 19 novembre 2017 à 14 h Château Royal, 3500, boul. du Souvenir, à Laval La version prononcée fait foi 2 Hommage à monsieur Robert Charlebois Il nous semble que Robert Charlebois fait depuis toujours partie de notre histoire et du paysage musical québécois. Et pour cause ! Sa tignasse bouclée, son regard pétillant et frondeur, sa voix riche et l’originalité de ses créations charment les Québécois, mais aussi la Francophonie, depuis maintenant plus de 50 ans. Auteur-compositeur, musicien et interprète québécois, Robert Charlebois est un pionnier du rock canadien-français. Grâce à lui, qualifié à juste titre de monument de la chanson québécoise tels Félix Leclerc et Gilles Vigneault, la chanson d’expression française s’est affirmée et épanouie. Sa première œuvre, La boulée, Robert Charlebois l’a composée à l’âge de 16 ans. Elle lui a valu, en 1965, le Grand Prix du Festival du disque, la première des innombrables distinctions qu’il recevra au cours de sa carrière. Quelques mois plus tard, son premier album a remporté le prix du meilleur disque de l’année et lui a valu d’être proclamé découverte de l’année dans la catégorie chansonnier à l’émission Jeunesse oblige diffusée à Radio-Canada. La suite de son ascension a rapidement confirmé que la découverte de l’année était un artiste authentique à la créativité inépuisable et aux talents incomparables. Il s’est en effet toujours démarqué par sa façon bien à lui de jouer avec les sons et les mots et de marier, dans ses textes, la poésie, l’humour et un vocabulaire savamment coloré, original et bien québécois. D’abord connu pour ses ballades sentimentales, dont entre autres La boulée, Marie-Noël et Demain l’hiver, il s’est par la suite imposé avec un style éclectique composé de sonorités américaines, rock et psychédéliques. Ce style, qui a bouleversé toutes les normes établies, l’a propulsé en tête des palmarès québécois et de l’Europe francophone. Plusieurs de ses succès sont devenus des classiques de la musique québécoise. Pour n’en nommer que quelques-uns, pensons notamment à Lindberg, Conception, Entr’deux joints, Je reviendrai à Montréal, J’t’aime comme un fou, Les talons hauts, et l’Indépendantriste. Aujourd’hui, à l’aube de ses 70 ans, ses textes et sa musique subjuguent toujours autant et laissent voir un côté de lui plus mûr, oscillant entre le rock, le jazz et le folk. Au cours de sa carrière, Robert Charlebois a enregistré plus d’une trentaine d’albums et mis en musique des textes d’écrivains et poètes de renom, dont Réjean Ducharme, Marcel Sabourin, Claude Péloquin, Claudine Monfette, alias Mouffe, Daniel Thibon et Arthur Rimbaud. Il a également collaboré avec Luc Plamondon et Jean-Jacques Goldman. Il a fait un nombre considérable de tournées et de spectacles au Québec, dont le mémorable Osstidcho, et fut régulièrement un incontournable des festivals d’été québécois et des fêtes entourant la Saint-Jean. Il a notamment partagé la scène de célèbres salles avec Jean-Guy Moreau, Gilles Vigneault, Yvon Deschamps, Janis Joplin, Félix Leclerc et Louise Forestier. Il s’est également démarqué en Europe, notamment en Pologne, en Belgique et en France, où il fut parrainé par Eddie Barclay. Il s’est produit à maintes reprises à l’Olympia de Paris et il a effectué plusieurs tournées, dont une avec Léo Ferré. Il a signé quelques musiques de film, dont celle du populaire film québécois Deux femmes en or, en 1970. Comme comédien, il a tenu des rôles dans plus de dix films et joué au théâtre dans deux pièces. Homme de scène, mais aussi épicurien de nature, Robert Charlebois s’est aussi passionné pour la fabrication et la mise en marché de bières québécoises haut de gamme. Il fut très actif dans ce domaine pendant 12 ans et fut notamment le porte- étendard de la micro-brasserie Unibroue. Soucieux de faire rayonner la culture au-delà des grands centres urbains, Robert Charlebois promeut et prend part à de nombreux événements et spectacles, notamment dans les Laurentides, où il réside depuis une quarantaine d’années. Lauréat, en 2014, du Grand prix de la culture des Laurentides à Saint-Jérôme, il est entre autres le parrain du Théâtre Le Patriote de Sainte-Agathe, lequel l’a vu fouler sa scène pour la première fois en 1970. 3 Tout au long de sa carrière, Robert Charlebois a reçu plusieurs prix et distinctions, dont le Prix Félix-Leclerc à cinq reprises, l’Ordre national du Québec (2008), le Prix William Harold Moon de la Société canadienne des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique (SOCAN) (2003) et le prix du Gouverneur général du Canada pour les Arts du spectacle (1994). Il fut de plus intronisé au Panthéon des auteurs et compositeurs pour ses chansons Demain L’Hiver, Fu Man Chu, Les ailes d’un ange, Lindberg et Ordinaire (2010), et un timbre à son effigie a été émis par Poste Canada (2007). Le Cirque du Soleil a par ailleurs mis en scène un spectacle hommage puisé dans son répertoire (2016). En octobre dernier, la SOCAN lui a octroyé deux prix spéciaux, une première pour un seul créateur dans l’histoire de la SOCAN, soit le prix Excellence et le prix Empreinte culturelle. Outre-mer, il s’est vu décerner le Grand Prix du Festival de la chanson française et le Grand Prix du Festival international de la jeunesse francophone à Spa en Belgique (1968), le premier prix d’interprétation à Sopot en Pologne (1970), le Prix de la Ville de Paris (1975), le prix de l’Académie Charles-Cros (1977), la Médaille de Vermeil de l’Académie française (1996) et, tout récemment, la Médaille de Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres en France. À le voir aller, nous pouvons être rassurés, Robert Charlebois n’en restera pas à 50 ans de carrière! Il ne cesse de se réinventer, et son talent continue d’alimenter notre patrimoine culturel. Un nouvel album, Rock’oustic, comblera d’ailleurs notre ouïe dès le printemps prochain. L’Université du Québec en Outaouais est heureuse et fière de décerner un doctorat honoris causa à monsieur Robert Charlebois pour sa carrière exceptionnelle et son apport d’une richesse incommensurable et immuable à la culture québécoise.     Song and Nationalism in Quebec [originally published in Contemporary French Civilization, Volume XXIV, No. 1, Spring /Summer 2000] The québécois national mythology is dependent on oral culture for sustenance. This orality, while allowing a popular transmission of central concepts, also leaves the foundations of a national francophone culture exposed to influence by the anglophone forces that dominate world popular culture. A primary example is song, which has been linked to a nationalist impulse in Quebec for over thirty years. What remains of that linkage today? Economic, cultural, political and linguistic pressures have made the role of song as an ethnic and national unifier increasingly ambiguous, and reflect uncertainties about the Quebec national project itself, as the Quebec economy becomes reflective of global trends toward supranational control. A discussion of nationalism must be based on a shared understanding of the term. Anthony Smith distinguishes between territorial and ethnic definitions: territorially defined nations can point to a specific territory and rule by law; ethnies, on the other hand, add a collective name, a myth of descent, a shared history, a distinctive culture and a sense of solidarity to the territorial foundation. If any element among these is missing, it must be invented. This “invention” should not be seen as a negative or devious attempt to distort the present or the past; it is part of the necessary constitution of a “story” which can become the foundation for a national myth-structure. As Smith notes: "What matters[...] is not the authenticity of the historical record, much less any attempt at 'objective' methods of historicizing, but the poetic, didactic and integrative purposes which that record is felt to disclose" (25).

    150 CANADIAN FILMS MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA Dear Friends: I am delighted to extend my warmest greetings to Canadians on National Canadian Film Day, a Canada 150 Signature Project, presented by REEL CANADA. This one-day event connects Canadians from sea to sea to celebrate the achievements of Canadian filmmakers. The film festival is one of many cultural projects during the Sesquicentennial year that will help build a sense of pride in and attachment to everything our remarkable country represents. National Canadian Film Day focuses on discovery, with opportunities to view culturally diverse Canadian films on television, online and in theatres large and small across the country.
