Las aristocracias locales desarollen formas de autorrepresentación en las construciones privadas y en la epigrafía publica. Si la romanización de las élites es en marcha, cambia fondamentalemente las culturas que muy despacio. Palabras clave: élites, romanización, Hispania Citerior. Signature: Date: i Abstract As small portable forms of statuary, pipeclay objects provide a valuable insight into the religious beliefs and practices of the culturally mixed populations of the Roman provinces. This thesis provides a complete catalogue of the nearly 1000 published and unpublished pipeclay objects found in Britain, including figurines, busts, shrines, animal vessels and masks. This research is the first study of this material conducted since the late 1970s. Pipeclay objects were made in Gaul and the Rhine-Moselle region but not in Britain. Attention thus focuses on where and how the British finds were made by analysing their styles, types, fabrics and any makers’ marks. This reveals how the pipeclay market in Britain was supplied and how these objects were traded, and suggests that cultural rather than production and trade factors were more influential on pipeclay consumption in Britain. -

El presente trabajo analiza la inclusión de la ciudad de Calagurris dentro del grupo étnico de los Vascones, que se considera efectuado en este momento histórico. Abstract Pompey the Great granted numerous advantages to different communities when concluding the Sertorian War.The present work studies the inclusion of the city of Calagurris inside the ethnic group of the Vascones that is considered made at this time. La mejor forma de constituir una clientela por un político romano ambicioso era la distribución de numerosos beneficios y recompensas, tanto a comunidades como a per- sonajes individuales notables1, conjuntamente con una propaganda muy bien orquestada. Cn. Pompeyo Magno (cos. I 70 a.C.) fue quien tuvo más éxito al coordinar todos estos elementos, lo que le habilitó para crear y organizar una de las más fuertes e importantes clientelas del Imperio2. Simplemente, prosiguió la política de personajes ambiciosos que, mientras servían a los intereses del Estado, a su vez intentaban extender el cuerpo de su clientela, que ya tenía sus bases en las acciones de su padre, Cn. Pompeyo Estrabón (cos. 89 a.C.)3, pero elevándolo a un nivel jamás alcanzado hasta entonces. El momento más propicio por Pompeyo Magno para realizar esta labor en Hispania fue el periodo entre la finalización de la guerra sertoriana y su marcha a Roma a cele- *. -

An analysis is made, especially, of the federated towns of the Tarracenses, and the acquisition by some of them of a privileged municipal sta- tute, and the problems originated by literary documents when they assess as Vascon towns villages that originally were not Vascon. -

CHAPTER FOUR CELTIC HEALER AND WARRIOR MAIDEN Celtic gods served the tribe in matters of war and peace, justice and fertility, salvation and healing. As fully-fledged tribal deities, they did not entirely engage the interests of the soldier on the Roman fron tier, but some divine aspects were relevant and desirable. \Ve have already seen the Celtic god as horned warrior. It remains to con sider native gods and goddesses as healers. The ill relied as much on the supernatural as on empirical medicine, inextricably linked with religion. 1 Consequently, physicians and priests were on staff together at most healing shrines, Graeco-Roman as well as Celtic (i.e., 614). 2 Most healer gods are associated with water and curative springs; as will be seen, some have connections with curses and ret ribution (Sulis at Bath, Mercury at Uley). Warrior God and Healer Under numerous epithets, Mars was thoroughly assimilated into Celtic cults known both on the continent and in Britain alone: Camulus (467), Lenus (468, 469), Loucetius (470), Toutates (474). Celtic gods equated with Mars in Britain emphasize the god's regal and mili tary character: 1 Alator, the huntsman (603-604), Belatucadrus (Fair Shining One: 554, 55 7, 558, 562, 567),4 Rigisamus (most kingly: 472), Segomo (Victor),5 Toutates (Ruler of the people: 473, 474), Barrex (Supreme). 6 Occasionally his role as healer surfaces, especially 1 Allason-Jones, Women, 156. 2 For example, Asclepius' incubation shrines at Cos and Epidaurus. For Celtic examples, priests and physicians attended the sick at the Fontes Sequana, where the water spirit who personified the river Seine dwelled (Deyts, Sanctuaire) and at Bath where Sulis Minerva presided over a healing sanctuary (Cunlifle, Sacred Spring, 359 62). -

Green Book Of Meditations Volume Ten Research Resources On Druidism 2003 Introduction Originally this was going to be the bulk of ARDA 2’s Part Seven Miscellany, but due to some copyright concerns and the general wholeness of the subject matter, it seem that a Green Book was possible out of the material. Much of material of Section Two is from ARDA 1’s Part Eight, and much from ARDA 1’s Part Seven is now here in Section Three and Four. This section will naturally expand over the years, so it’s a good idea to separate it from the main body text of ARDA 2. I don’t wish you to misinterpret this book as if for me to say that you have to be fascinated and obsessed with Celtic research to understand Druidism. That’s not what I mean. Yes, I’ve studied the old ones, but I think there is more than can be learned form living plants and animals and each other than from the few remaining scraps. CURCHIN UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO (CANADÁ) RESUMEN: Un análisis detallado de los topónimos de la Cantabria antigua impugna la idea de una substancial presencia preindoeuropea o vasca en esta región. Fuera de un número limitado de nombres romanos, testimonio de un nivel débil de romanización, la clasificación lingüística de los topónimos se divide casi igualmente entre el céltico y una lengua indoeuropea no céltica, de la cual ignoramos su identidad. SUMMARY: A detailed analysis of place-names in ancient Cantabria disproves the idea of a substantial pre-Indo-European or Basque presence in the region. Apart from a relatively small number of Roman names, indicative of a weak degree of romanization, the linguistic affiliation of toponyms is almost equally divided between Celtic and a non-Celtic Indo-European language which remains unidentified. It is an unfortunate fact that, apart from the accounts of Augustus’ campaigns in 26-19 B.C., the ancient sources have left us no narrative history of Cantabria. In particular, there is a paucity of information about the sequence and interaction of the various ethnic and linguistic groups that populated this region, leaving doubt as to whether the dominant language was Iberian, Basque, Celtic, or some earlier Indo-European (henceforth IE) tongue. While nineteenth- century scholars such as M. Assas and A. Fernández Guerra believed that the Cantabrians were Celtic, P. Bosch Gimpera considered them an Iberian enclave within the Celtic block, and J. Caro Baroja identified them as an autochthonous, pre-Celtic people1. -

Abilus: Gallic god in France, worshiped at Ar-nay-de-luc in Côte d’Or (France) Abinius: Gallic river god or ‘the defence of god’. Abna, Abnoba, Avnova: goddess of the wood and river of the Black Wood and the surrounding territories in Germany, also a goddess of hunt. Abondia, Abunciada, Habonde, Habondia: British goddess of plenty and prosperity. Originally she is a Germanic earth goddess. Accasbel: a member of the first Irish invasion, the Partholans. Probably an early god of wine. Achall: Irish goddess of diligence and family love.
