Signature: Date: i Abstract As small portable forms of statuary, pipeclay objects provide a valuable insight into the religious beliefs and practices of the culturally mixed populations of the Roman provinces. This thesis provides a complete catalogue of the nearly 1000 published and unpublished pipeclay objects found in Britain, including figurines, busts, shrines, animal vessels and masks. This research is the first study of this material conducted since the late 1970s. Pipeclay objects were made in Gaul and the Rhine-Moselle region but not in Britain. Attention thus focuses on where and how the British finds were made by analysing their styles, types, fabrics and any makers’ marks. This reveals how the pipeclay market in Britain was supplied and how these objects were traded, and suggests that cultural rather than production and trade factors were more influential on pipeclay consumption in Britain. -

ON THE INDO-EUROPEAN ORIGIN OF TWO LUSITANIAN THEO- NYMS (LAEBO AND REVE)1 KRZYSZTOF TOMASZ WITCZAK £ódŸ Lusitanian, the Pre-Celtic Indo-European language of the Hispanic Peninsula, demonstrates numerous similarities in theonymy to the Celtic areas, e.g. Lusit. Iccona (dat. sg.) = Gaul. Epona ‘the horse-goddess’, Lusit. Lucubo (dat. pl.) = Gaul. Lugoves (nom. pl.) and Celtiber. Luguei (dat. sg.). Other religious comparisons relate to an even larger Italo-Celtic geographi- cal area, e.g. OLat. Pales (f.) and Lusit. Trebo-pala, Tenco-pala, Old Roman suouetaurilia and the analogical triple animal offerings of Lusitania (i.e. porcom - oilam - taurom). The au- thor suggests two new Italo-Lusitanian equations in theonymy (namely: 1. Lusit. Laebo = Lat. Laribus, 2. Reve = Lat. Ioui, Osk. diuvei). Both comparisons are firmly documented by the Latin-Lusitanian texts, and additionally the latter bears a close resemblance of the formations (the same innovational declension stem *dyeu¾-, not *diu¾-) and an interesting exclusiveness of the epithets (e.g. Lusit. Reve Laraucu = Lat. Ioui Ladico [both dedications from Orense]). The phonological development of IE. *d to Lusit. r, documented by 4 different instances (2 in- dubitable ones), occurs in some Italic languages, but it is absent from the Celtic language world. Lusitanian is a scarcely attested Indo-European language from the Iberian Peninsula (see Beekes 1995, p. 27), which – in opposition to all the Celtic languages – preserved IE. *p both initially and medially, e.g. 1) Lusitanian porcom (acc. sg.) ‘pig’ < IE. *póros ‘piglet, young pig’ (cf. Dahmer 1 A Lost Civilization as Great as Any Scholars traditionally associate the advancement of Western culture from antiquity to the Renaissance with the innovations of the Romans and their Mediterranean cultural predecessors, the Greeks and Etruscans, to the extent that the word "civilization" often seems synonymous with Romanization. In doing so, historians unfairly discount the cultural achievements of other Indo-European peoples who achieved civilization in their own right and contributed much to ancient and modern life. -

Bażyńskiego 4; 80-952 Gdansk; Poland E-mail: [email protected] Received 09 July 2014; accepted 09 July 2014 The paper concerns mythology, rites, philosophical tradition and other intel- lectual inspirations, which have influenced the Western culture’s approach to the male-female dualism in social categories and the culture’s attitude towards the phenomenon of androgyny. This male-female bipartite category and the oc- currence of transgressing it, or not fitting it, is analysed in relation to divergent philosophical and sociological theories, like the thought of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Michael Foucault, Judith Butler, etc. The purpose of the paper is to expose – and search for the reason for – Western culture’s ambivalent attitude towards androgyny: perceived either as something odd and stigmatized for not matching the traditional dichotomy in cultural categories, or a perfect dual-unity integrat- ing the two polar opposites in one being. Androgyn and the division of sexes According to Plato: “The original human nature was not like the present, but different. The sexes were not two as they are now, but originally three in number; there was man, woman and the union of the two, of which the name survives but nothing else. Once it was a dis- tinct kind, with a bodily shape and name of its own, constituted by the union of the male and the female: but now only the word ‘androgynous’ is preserved, and that as a term of reproach” (Plato 1953: 521). -

CHAPTER FOUR CELTIC HEALER AND WARRIOR MAIDEN Celtic gods served the tribe in matters of war and peace, justice and fertility, salvation and healing. As fully-fledged tribal deities, they did not entirely engage the interests of the soldier on the Roman fron tier, but some divine aspects were relevant and desirable. \Ve have already seen the Celtic god as horned warrior. It remains to con sider native gods and goddesses as healers. The ill relied as much on the supernatural as on empirical medicine, inextricably linked with religion. 1 Consequently, physicians and priests were on staff together at most healing shrines, Graeco-Roman as well as Celtic (i.e., 614). 2 Most healer gods are associated with water and curative springs; as will be seen, some have connections with curses and ret ribution (Sulis at Bath, Mercury at Uley). Warrior God and Healer Under numerous epithets, Mars was thoroughly assimilated into Celtic cults known both on the continent and in Britain alone: Camulus (467), Lenus (468, 469), Loucetius (470), Toutates (474). Celtic gods equated with Mars in Britain emphasize the god's regal and mili tary character: 1 Alator, the huntsman (603-604), Belatucadrus (Fair Shining One: 554, 55 7, 558, 562, 567),4 Rigisamus (most kingly: 472), Segomo (Victor),5 Toutates (Ruler of the people: 473, 474), Barrex (Supreme). 6 Occasionally his role as healer surfaces, especially 1 Allason-Jones, Women, 156. 2 For example, Asclepius' incubation shrines at Cos and Epidaurus. For Celtic examples, priests and physicians attended the sick at the Fontes Sequana, where the water spirit who personified the river Seine dwelled (Deyts, Sanctuaire) and at Bath where Sulis Minerva presided over a healing sanctuary (Cunlifle, Sacred Spring, 359 62). -

Green Book Of Meditations Volume Ten Research Resources On Druidism 2003 Introduction Originally this was going to be the bulk of ARDA 2’s Part Seven Miscellany, but due to some copyright concerns and the general wholeness of the subject matter, it seem that a Green Book was possible out of the material. Much of material of Section Two is from ARDA 1’s Part Eight, and much from ARDA 1’s Part Seven is now here in Section Three and Four. This section will naturally expand over the years, so it’s a good idea to separate it from the main body text of ARDA 2. I don’t wish you to misinterpret this book as if for me to say that you have to be fascinated and obsessed with Celtic research to understand Druidism. That’s not what I mean. Yes, I’ve studied the old ones, but I think there is more than can be learned form living plants and animals and each other than from the few remaining scraps. ANWYL THE extant remains of the Celtic forms of religion afford abundant testimony to the great variety of divine names which were associated therewith. No student of Celtic religion can fail to be impressed with the number of Celtic deities, who appear to have been local or tribal in character. Even where a certain deity appears to have become non-local, it will generally be found on investigation that the sphere of the extended worship has fairly well-defined areas and centres. We cannot take as our first guide for the classification and grouping of Celtic gods a Pantheon like that of Homer, behind which there is a long history of religious development, and upon which there is the impress of a literary tradition. -

PERCEPTIONS OF ANNWN: THE OTHERWORLD IN THE FOUR BRANCHES OF THE MABINOGI Rhian Rees MA Celtic Studies Dissertation Department of Welsh and Bilingual Studies Supervisor: Dr Jane Cartwright University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Lampeter 2012 2 ABSTRACT There is little description or positive information about the realm of Annwn in the Four Branches, and relatively few publications have explored the Otherworld in the Mabinogi in any depth. The redactor presumably did not deem such detail necessary since in his time the Otherworld was a place familiar to his audience from many other stories and folk-tales which have not survived to inform our own times. The objective of this thesis, therefore, is to establish the perceived location of the Celtic Otherworld, its nature and topography, and to obtain descriptions of its people, buildings and animals and any distinctive objects or characteristics pertaining to it. The ways in which Annwn influences each of the Four Branches are also considered. Some sketchy evidence is available in Welsh poetry, mostly various descriptive names reflecting different aspects of Annwn, but for more detailed information it is necessary to trawl the waters of early Irish literature. The Irish poems and stories give much fuller particulars of all characteristics of the Celtic Otherworld, though they do suggest that there was more than one such other world. Some parallels from Norse literature and the Lais of Marie de France also reinforce certain themes of this thesis, such as magical tumuli and magical bags and
