While some of the original branches have been pruned away, others have been added by growth and graft. The tree must now be judged by its fruits. The record of Absalom's life in 2 Samuel xiii. —xix. is as clear and concise as if written by the court-prophet Nathan. It has no parallel to it in Chronicles, and stands alone as a graphic piece of inspired Hebrew literature. In one view it is a vivid biography of the young man Absalom, the prodigal son of the Old Testament, who perished in his sins. In another view it is a sacred tragedy, full of most striking pictures of human nature, varied with deeply laid plots, enriched by frequent changes of scene, and enlivened by a great diversity of characters. For the study of the motives, policies, principles, and characters of evil and designing men, there are few portions of Scripture more profitable. Rarely do seven chapters furnish such a group of bold actors, such a record of great crimes against God 1* 5 6 PREFACE. and men, and such signal divine judgments upon the wicked. In the Prince Absalom we see the accomplished demagogue and the ambitious politician ; in Ahithophel the wise but corrupt statesman ; in Amnon, Jonadab, and ' ; Shimei, three ' lewd fellows of the baser sort " in Ziba the shrewdness of an experienced swindler ; in Joab the deepest private revenge combined with an effective use of his great military talents for eminent public services, and these are abundantly able to supply all the dark deeds re- quired in a vigorous, thrilling drama. Better men also appear, and it is worthy of notice that they are all upon the side of King David, who is the chief personage in the record. The priests—the church—did not abandon him in the time of his greatest national troubles. Unscrupulous as Joab was, his loyalty, duriDg Absalom's rebellion, was worthy of the greatest general under the Hebrew monarchy. Hushai gave his eloquence to the holy cause. Ittai was heroic in his patriotism, and poor Prince Mephibosheth, had he not been lame, might have carried his true alle- giance into kindly rivalry with that of Barzillai and his neighbouring chieftains of Grilead. Not a good, moral, godly man is named among those who engaged in Absalom's rebellion, unless the silence concerning the character of the incompetent Amasa is to be interpreted in his favour. The Prince seemed to de- pend upon a general ungodliness and hatred of David's piety then prevalent in the nation. The men, their spirit, their crafty designs, and their bold methods of gaining their ends, all tended to a great tragedy. In a third view we have before us a solemn history. It PREFACE. 7 presents us the record of a desperate attempt to dethrone David, revolutionize the nation, and destroy the theocracy. It is the chief one of all the movements which finally re- sulted in the separation of the ten tribes from the federal government. Absalom prepared the way for Jeroboam. No reader will fail to notice the hand of God in all this inspired history. He sustained his servant David in all his royal trials, and preserved the throne, the church, and the city of the great king, by a series of remarkable pro- vidences. Nor do these three views exhaust the record. It is a striking picture of a family, deserving of close and fre- quent study. A father's sins are intensified in some of his children, and bring the sword into his own house. There are shown to us some of the plainest lessons upon family government, family trials, and family judgments. It is not only as a king that David is sorely afflicted, but as a father. Those who magnify his faults should justly remember his very great and very many trials. In no other part of his reign did he exhibit more wisdom, ten- derness, and greatness in adversity. It is our effort in this unpretending volume to draw some useful lessons for our guidance in the family, in society, in the church, and in the national government. We have also kept in view the gospel light afforded by these seven chapters, for in the depths of David's heart we see an illustration of the boundless love of Grod, and in his sor- rows he stands as a type of our Lord Jesus Christ. It was the favour which the original lectures received from those who heard them, that prompted the author to 8 PREFACE. commit them to the press, and the volume is now laid at the feet of Him who sits upon David's throne, for only with His blessing can it be of any service in securing a further allegiance to the King of kings. W.M.B. Trenton, New Jersey. THE REBEL PRINCE CHAPTER I. Birthplace and Boyhood. IVe learned to judge of men by their own deeds ; I do not make the accident of birth The standard of their merit. Our starting point is one of king David's great unselfish sorrows. Had he been a usurper, or been impatient for the throne which Saul had forfeited, or revengeful toward the hunter after his life, he would have exulted when he heard of the death of the royal persecutor. But no : the fountains of his tenderness were opened, and the great deeps of his heart were broken up. Caesar wept when he heard that Pompey, his bitterest rival, was dead by other hands than his : with sincerer grief David lamented the fall of the mighty in Israel. Caesar, after conquering Pompey's sons, was honoured with the title, "Father of his country." David did not seek a victory over Saul's sons, and yet the people were ready to anoint him king over Judah, for he had long been the anointed of the Lord. 10 THE REBEL PRINCE. After he had vented his grief in tears and in song, he " inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah ? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go ? And he said, Unto Hebron." That was no mean city. It was associated with ancient and sacred events. No city in Palestine so carries one back to the earliest patriarchal times. It seems to have been the first haunt of civilized men in the land ; so ancient that it was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt. Under the oaks of that neighbourhood Abraham had often pitched his tent and raised his altar to the God who had sent him forth to sojourn in the land of promise, as in a strange country, and to join his example with that of our Lord, in teaching us to confess ourselves as strangers and pilgrims on the earth. There, among the olive-groves, had rambled Isaac, the child of promise, before he was chosen for the painful trial of his father's faith. There Sarah, the partner in Abraham's wanderings, and the partaker with him in the promises, had breathed her last, and thence she went to " a better country, that is an heavenly." There was the cave in which was laid the dust of so many of the patriarchs, in the hope of a glorious resurrection. "And from that day to this, it has so come to pass in the providence of God, that no na- tion or people has had possession of Machpelah, who would have been disposed to disturb the ashes of the illustrious dead within it." And there, BIRTHPLACE AND BOYHOOD. 11 doubtless, will rest in peace the dust of Abraham and Sarah, of Isaac and Rebekah, of Jacob and Leah, until God shall bid it rise. It was the only spot that the Father of the faithful ever owned, and no doubt, it will be held for his family until the last day. Perhaps Joshua and Caleb visited it, when they Were honestly spying out the land, and from the neighbouring valley they carried back the goodly Eshcol grapes, as a most acceptable proof of the richness of the promised land.

And where are these two in the list of 1 Chronicles 3:19-20 ( 19b the sons of Zerubbabel were Meshullam and Hananiah, and Shelomith was their sister; 20 and Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah and Jushab-hesed, five)? Cultural Factors 1. Simple remarriage. It is likely that in most marriages, men were older and women were younger (e.g. Joseph and Mary). So it is also likely that when husbands died, many women remarried. This was true in ancient times: Boaz married the widow Ruth, David married the widow Bathsheba after Uriah was killed. It also seems likely to have been true in classical, 1 st century times: Paul (in Rom.7:1-3) suggests that this is at least somewhat common in the Jewish community (‘I speak to those under the Law’ he says) in the 1 st century.

Although we cannot relate to the kingly rule of David, we can understand his struggle to live his life under the mighty hand of God. His success in that struggle earned him the honor as “a man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22). The intent of David’s heart is not always apparent by simply viewing his life as recorded in the books of Samuel. It is, however, abundantly clear by reading his Psalms. The purpose of this class will be to study the Psalms of David in the context of his life. David was a shepherd, musician, warrior, poet, friend, king, and servant. THE PLUNDER In the previous shiur, we discussed David's military victories over the Philistines, Moav, and Aram, described in the opening verses of our chapter. Following the victory over Aram, Scripture describes the plunder taken by David in this war: (7) And David took the shields of gold1[1] that were on the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem.     Books of Samuel 8. David’s Decline Although the David narrative reads as a continuous story for nearly two books of the Bible, it tends to lurch somewhat from theme to theme. The opening chapters are about David and Saul (and Saul’s family), in which David is pure success; then there is the period in the wilderness, where David struggles somewhat and is forced to take desperate measures; then the establishing of his monarchy, containing his accomplishments as a statesman and the consolidation and growth of his power; then the Bathsheba interlude where his power is abused. Now, in the final chapters of his story, we are introduced rather suddenly to David’s sons, who have gone entirely unmentioned until now. Many scholars identify this portion of the narrative as a once-independent literary piece, known as the Succession Narrative, as it deals primarily with the question of how Solomon came to succeed David on the throne: through the progressive elimination of his older brothers. Whether this theory is correct or not, the recognition that these chapters are about the issue of dynastic succession is surely accurate. We may also note that the eventuality of Solomon’s accession to the throne is never really in question. First, because the text as it currently stands must have been finalized after Solomon had, historically, succeeded David; but also, because even in the one verse narrating Solomon’s birth, in 2 Samuel 12:24, we are told that “the Lord favored him.” We should read these chapters therefore not as dramatic narrative with an unexpected ending, but rather as explanation: how is it that Solomon, fourth in line for the throne, was the one to actually get it? David’s eldest son is Amnon, who is featured in 2 Samuel 13.

Because of these sins God told David through the prophet Nathan that the sword would never depart from his house; and that He would raise up evil against him from within his own house. 2 SAMUEL 12:10-14 “Thus says the Lord, ‘the sword shall never depart from your house… Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight.. the child also that is born to you shall surely die.” Today we’re going to look at the members of David’s household and see who God used to fulfill the prophetic words He spoke to David. David had eight wives whose names are known but according to 2 Samuel (5:13) he had many more. How many is unknown. His first wife was Michael, the daughter of King Saul. While David was the commander of the army of Israel, Saul gave his daughter Michael to David as his bride. This relationship started out well but ended with Michael despising David and resulted in her being barren till the day she died. His second wife was Abigail, the widow of Nabal, a wealthy man whom the Lord killed after he had treated David with contempt. After his death David married his widow, Abigail.

The son of Amran and of Jochebed his wife, and of the family of Kohath, who was the second son of Levi, who was the third son of Jacob. Miriam was Aaron's elder sister and Moses was his junior brother by some three years. Aaron married Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab and sister of Naashon, and by her had four sons -Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar (Ex. 6: 16-23). The Man Who Was an Excellent Speaker It is somewhat fitting that Aaron should not only begin the list of men under the letter A-one of the longest lists of all-but also of all the men listed alphabetically in the Bible. The first glimpse we have of this great Bible saint is that of an eloquent speaker, and because of this fact he was chosen by God to be the prophet and spokesman of his brother Moses in his encounter with Pharaoh. The fame of his oratory was known in heaven, and recognized by God. A great orator has been defined as a good man well-skilled in speaking, and of such capacities was Aaron. When Moses protested against appearing before Pharaoh, pleading that he was not eloquent, but slow of speech and of a slow tongue (Ex. 3:10; 4:11, 12) did he refer to a defect of speech he suffered from? "Not eloquent" means, not a man of words and "slow of speech, and of a slow tongue" means heavy of speech and heavy of tongue.

Fleming All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Among the stories surrounding the most famous of biblical kings—David—are a number of episodes that contain sexual components. Aspects of the sexual can be found especially in the narratives of David’s reign but also to a certain extent in the accounts of his rise to power and the succession of his son Solomon. Though David is not always directly involved, the episodes involving sexuality are closely intertwined with the story of David’s kingship over Israel and Judah. The sustained recurrence of sexual episodes surrounding David suggests that sexuality should be considered a literary motif in the David story found in 1 Samuel 16-1 Kings 2. In this thesis, I provide a systematic treatment of sexuality in the narratives of David’s rise to power, his reign, and Solomon’s succession as presented in 1 Samuel 16-1 Kings 2. Specifically, I focus on sexuality and kingship by examining how sexuality relates to royal ideology and political pragmatism in the narratives surrounding the establishment of the Davidic dynasty. This study considers how the sexual episodes in 1 Samuel 16-1 Kings 2 function within the overall narrative of David and what they might suggest about cultural conceptions of gender, sexuality, and kingship in ancient Israel and Judah within their ancient Near Eastern cultural context.

    Page 1 of 11 Meadgate Spring 2019 The Early Kings Session 7 – David and Solomon Bible Background – 2 Samuel 13-24 Last time we left on a cliff-hanger! David’s daughter Tamar has been raped by her half- brother Amnon, and her full-blood brother Absolom, on hearing the news, states: “Be quiet now, my sister; he is your brother. Don't take this thing to heart”. 2 Sam 13:20 It seems a very callous response – what is Absolom up to? David was “furious” on hearing about Tamar’s rape (2 Sam 13:21), but he does nothing. Absolom does not challenge Amnon – in fact, he does not say a word, Tamar lived from that day on in Absolom’s house, a “desolate woman” (2 Sam 13: 20) Two years later, Absolom engineers a plot to get Amnon and the other sons of David to a feast. When Amnon has been drinking, Absolom orders his men to kill Amnon. The other sons flee, and an incorrect report reaches David that all his sons have been killed. He immediately shreds his clothes, as a sin of mourning, but then is informed that only Amnon has died, and is made aware of Absolom’s hatred following the rape of Tamar. Absolom flees, and is away for three years. Although David mourns for Amnon, he eventually longs to see him (2 Sam 13:38). David saw a bitter replay and amplification of his own sins. God had predicted that David’s family would suffer as a result of his sin with Bathsheba and against Uriah.
