Ethnographiquement, le mémoire se concentre sur le rituel principal de l’Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (AVY), les séances de style Mysore, telle qu’exercé par la communauté de pratiquants de la Sattva Yoga Shala à Montréal. En tant que performance, le rituel met en branle le potentiel de transformation. La pratique de ce yoga implique une discipline et un apprentissage draconien sur une longue échelle temporelle qui amènent, au fur et à mesure, des changements se répercutant dans/et influençant le vécu quotidien des adeptes. Le mémoire résume d’abord les bases littéraires du yoga, et le contexte historique de l’avènement de l’AVY ainsi que celui de sa venue à Montréal. Pour solidifier l’analyse, le travail poursuit par l’idéologie et la praxis du groupe d’étude. Le cœur de l’analyse suit. Nous examinons premièrement les modalités potentielles à la transformation du soi, c’est-à-dire les éléments rituels généraux et ceux spécifiques à l’AVY; puis, nous nous penchons sur ce que ces modalités développent, permettent, et changent chez les répondants, donc leurs impacts. Dans cette recherche, l’Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga est à la fois une réalité empirique et une catégorie analytique servant à approfondir les connaissances anthropologiques sur le phénomène de la transformation personnelle selon le cadre expérientiel de la religiosité moderne. Mots clés : Ashtanga yoga/ transformation/ religiosité moderne/ rituel/ incorporation/ apprenticeship, affect/ guérison/ agentivité. iii ABSTRACT Within the context of the modern expression of religiosity, this study explores how the methods of Ashtanga yoga is produce the experience of transformation for the individual who practices them, and to a certain extent, his or her surroundings. Ethnographically, the thesis concentrates on the main ritual of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (AVY), Mysore style sessions, as practiced by the community of practitioners at Sattva Yoga Shala in Montreal. Through its execution, the ritual sets into motion the potential for transformation. The practice of this yoga involves long-term discipline and a draconian learning process whose gradual changes influence and/or carry over into the daily experience of devotees. The thesis first summarizes the textual foundations of yoga, and the historical context of both the rise of AVY, as well as its arrival in Montreal. To solidify the analysis, the work continues with the ideology and praxis of the study group. The heart of the analysis follows. In the analysis, I first examine potential modalities of self-transformation; that is to say, general elements of ritual and those specific to AVY. I go on to examine their impact, that is, what these modalities develop, allow and change for practitioners. In this research, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is simultaneously an empirical reality and an analytical category serving to deepen the anthropological knowledge of the phenomenon of personal transformation according to the experiential framework of modern religiosity. (Hermann Hesse, Das Glasperlenspiel) Als im Juni 2015 zum ersten Mal weltweit der Internationale Yoga-Tag begangen wurde, traten sehr schnell Kritiker auf den Plan, die dieses Ereignis als politische Machtdemonstration der national- konservativen indischen Regierung interpretierten. Yoga solle hier als ausschließlich indisches Erbe und Kulturgut dargestellt werden, während doch tatsächlich der heute überall auf der Welt praktizierte moderne Yoga auch von vielfältigen Strömungen und Einflüssen des Westens geprägt worden sei. So ungefähr lautete damals die Kritik, die mir geradezu ketzerisch erschien; ziemlich heftig wurde da an den Grundfesten meiner heilen Yoga-Welt gerüttelt. Weil aber, wie Hermann Hesse im Glasperlenspiel erklärt, Glaube und Zweifel sich gegenseitig bedingen, wurde es mir bald ein Bedürfnis, mich mit dieser Kritik konstruktiv auseinanderzusetzen. Inzwischen sind die Inhalte dieses Forschungszweigs, der sich mit der Tradition und Entwicklung des Yoga beschäftigt, bei mir angekommen.     The Arbutus Review Vol. 4, No. 1 (2013) Spiritual Authenticity in a Secular Context: How Modern Postural Yoga is Searching for Legitimacy in All the Wrong Places Kelly Lindsay Abstract: This paper examines the historical origins and spiritual context of contemporary yoga practice in the West. In an attempt to assess the spiritual significance of this somatic practice, this essay explores the way in which both critics and promoters of postural yoga frame their arguments for the value of contemporary yoga practice by showing either its disconnect from, or homogeneity with ancient Hindu traditions. By tracing the evolution of yogic practice from its scriptural origins to its contemporary manifestations, this paper argues that yoga has never been a static or perfectly defined entity. Rather, yogic practice has a long history of being re-interpreted to meet the specific spiritual needs of practitioners. Modern Postural Yoga (MPY) represents a continuation of this tradition of adaptation. Rather than being an inadequate replication of an ancient tradition, I argue that MPY is a distinctly modern practice that has been transformed to fit the contemporary spiritual needs of a secularizing and body-conscious Western society. Classes and studios have sprung up in a wide variety of manifestations, from regular sessions in high-school gym classes to posh studios in cosmopolitan centres. A 2012 survey done by Yoga Journal estimates that approximately 20.4 million Americans regularly practice yoga, (roughly 8.7% of the adult population), while another 44% of the population, describe themselves as “aspirational yogis,” or people who are very interested in pursuing yogic practice (Yoga in America study 2012, 2013).

    The Roots of Yoga: Ancient + Modern BY MARK SINGLETON | FEB 4, 2011 The pale winter sunlight shone from the high windows of the Cambridge University library onto a dark leather book cover. In the hall full of silent scholars, I opened it and leafed through picture after picture of men and women in familiar postures. Here was Warrior Pose; there was Downward Dog. On this page the standing balance Utthita Padangusthasana; on the next pages Headstand, Handstand, Supta Virasana, and more—everything you might expect to find in a manual of yoga asana. But this was no yoga book. It was a text describing an early 20th-century Danish system of dynamic exercise called Primitive Gymnastics. Standing in front of my yoga students that evening, I reflected on my discovery. What did it mean that many of the poses I was teaching were identical to those developed by a Scandinavian gymnastics teacher less than a century ago? This gymnast had not been to India and had never received any teaching in asana. And yet his system, with its five-count format, its abdominal “locks,” and its dynamic jumps in and out of those oh-so-familiar postures, looked uncannily like the vinyasa yoga system I knew so well. Time passed, and my curiosity nagged at me, leading me to do further research. I learned that the Danish system was an offshoot of a 19th-century Scandinavian gymnastics tradition that had revolutionized the way Europeans exercised. Systems based on the Scandinavian model sprang up throughout Europe and became the basis for physical training in armies, navies, and many schools.

Die interessante Frage, die sich daraus ergibt, lautet: Wenn die Körpertechniken des moder- nen Asanayoga nicht aus dem alten Indien stammen, von wo stammen sie dann und wie kommt es, dass sie heute als Yoga bezeichnet werden. Mit dieser Frage hat sich auch unsere Zeitschrift bereits mehrmals auf der Grundlage von publi- zierten wissenschaftlichen Forschungen zur Entwicklungs- und Rezeptionsgeschichte des Yoga befasst.
