(Hermann Hesse, Das Glasperlenspiel) Als im Juni 2015 zum ersten Mal weltweit der Internationale Yoga-Tag begangen wurde, traten sehr schnell Kritiker auf den Plan, die dieses Ereignis als politische Machtdemonstration der national- konservativen indischen Regierung interpretierten. Yoga solle hier als ausschließlich indisches Erbe und Kulturgut dargestellt werden, während doch tatsächlich der heute überall auf der Welt praktizierte moderne Yoga auch von vielfältigen Strömungen und Einflüssen des Westens geprägt worden sei. So ungefähr lautete damals die Kritik, die mir geradezu ketzerisch erschien; ziemlich heftig wurde da an den Grundfesten meiner heilen Yoga-Welt gerüttelt. Weil aber, wie Hermann Hesse im Glasperlenspiel erklärt, Glaube und Zweifel sich gegenseitig bedingen, wurde es mir bald ein Bedürfnis, mich mit dieser Kritik konstruktiv auseinanderzusetzen. Inzwischen sind die Inhalte dieses Forschungszweigs, der sich mit der Tradition und Entwicklung des Yoga beschäftigt, bei mir angekommen. Feature Article The oldest sports library in the world celebrates 200 years Lotta Haglund, Anna Ekenberg, Karin Jäppinen, Heléne Karlsson Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, Stockholm, Sweden Abstract The article relates the 200 year history of the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, from its founder, Pehr Henrik Ling to its present status as the oldest sports library in the world. The authors describe the library’s humble beginnings to its important role nowadays as an integral part of the School’s sport education curriculum. Key words: libraries; library services; sports. Watson York St. John’s College, University of Leeds Stuart Weir Christians in Sport, UK Stephen Friend York St. John’s College, University of Leeds Introduction [1] The development of Muscular Christianity in the second half of the nineteenth century has had a sustained impact on how Anglo-American Christians view the relationship between sport, physical fitness, and religion. It has been argued that the birth of Muscular Christianity in Victorian Britain forged a strong “. link between Christianity and sport” that “. has never been broken” (Crepeau: 2). The emergence of neo-muscular Christian groups during the latter half of the twentieth century (Putney) and the promotion of sport in Catholic institutions, such as the University of Notre Dame, can be seen as a direct consequence of Victorian Muscular Christianity. Modern Evangelical Protestant organizations, such as Christians in Sport (CIS) in England and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) in the U.S., have resurrected many of the basic theological principles used to promote sport and physical fitness in Victorian Britain. [2] The basic premise of Victorian Muscular Christianity was that participation in sport could contribute to the development of Christian morality, physical fitness, and “manly” character. The term was first adopted in the 1850s to portray the characteristics of Charles Kingsley (1819- 1875) and Thomas Hughes’ (1822-1896) novels. Both Kingsley and Hughes were keen sportsmen and advocates of the strenuous life. Fishing, hunting, and camping were Kingsley’s favorite pastimes, which he saw as a “counterbalance” to “. -

Kumlien e os indícios de variadas ginásticas suecas 2 Iara Marina dos Anjos Bonifácio* Anderson da Cunha Baía** ABSTRACT Swedish gymnastics, systematized by Pehr Henrik Ling (1776-1839) at the Stockholm Central Institute of Gymnastics (CIG), spread throughout the world, at least until the last decades of the 20th century, especially from the circulation of individuals trained at the CIG. Among them was Ludvig Gideon Kumlien (1874-1934), a Swedish doctor-gymnast who graduated from the Stockholm Institute, who moved in 1895 to Paris, France, where he carried out different actions to promote Ling’s gymnastics, among them publishing handbooks. What do these handbooks reveal? Can we assert that the gymnastics promoted by Kumlien is Ling’s gymnastics? Or that it is the same gymnastics he learned at CIG? In contact with a culture different from his own, does Kumlien alter the gymnastics he learned? Thus, this article aims to understand which gymnastics Ludvig Kumlien has promoted in his handbooks. To do so, we mobilized as sources the handbooks written by Kumlien and his partners and newspaper reports from the countries in which his writings circulated. By analyzing Ludvig Kumlien’s guidebooks, we observed that the gymnastics he divulged in French territory were 1 Translated by Tikinet. 144 Historical Journal of Massachusetts • Summer 2011 Luther Halsey Gulick II, c. 1900 (Courtesy of the Springfield College Archives) 145 Luther Gulick: His Contributions to Springfield College, the YMCA, and “Muscular Christianity” CLIFFORD PUTNEY Abstract: Based largely on hitherto unpublished archival sources, this article focuses on the early life and career of Luther Halsey Gulick II (1865-1918). Gulick was among America’s most influential educators in the Progressive Era. He is best known today for co- founding the Camp Fire Girls (CFG) with his wife Charlotte. But before his involvement with CFG he taught physical education for the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) at Springfield College, Massachusetts, in the 1890s. As a professor at Springfield, Gulick achieved a great deal, and this article examines his many accomplishments, including his invention of the YMCA Triangle (the organization’s official emblem) and his role in the invention of both basketball and volleyball. The article also analyzes Gulick’s unconventional childhood, when he travelled around the world with his parents. They were Congregational missionaries who fervently hoped Luther would embrace their brand of ascetic Christianity. He preferred a religion that was more corporeal, however. This led to him becoming a leader of the “muscular Christianity” movement. Muscular Christians espoused a combination of religion and sports, although, in the Historical Journal of Massachusetts, Vol. 39 (1 & 2), Summer 2011 © Institute for Massachusetts Studies, Westfield State University 146 Historical Journal of Massachusetts • Summer 2011 end, Gulick ended up emphasizing sports over religion. Historian Clifford Putney has extensively researched the Gulick family and is the author of Missionaries in Hawai‘i: The Lives of Peter and Fanny Gulick, 1797-1883 (2010). -

However, concern with personal health and wellbeing has not been a new phenomenon. Moreover, the use of sport and physical activity as a form of preventive medicine has been a cornerstone regarding ideas over the attainment of health. In 1929 the New Health Society proposed ten ‘Health Rules’ and, at number ten, after advice on topics such as diet, internal and external cleanliness and sunlight, was exercise in which the individual was encouraged to, ‘Take out-of-door exercise every day. -

Yoga Comes to American Physical Education: Josephine Rathbone and Corrective Physical Education P a t r ic ia V e r t in s k y 1 School of Kinesiology University o f British Columbia Around the turn-of-the-twentieth-century yoga took on an American mantle, developing into India’s first “global brand" of physical culture. Physical educa tors became implicated in this transnational exchange adopting aspects of yoga into their programs and activities, though there has been an insufficient attempt to piece together the sum and pattern of their intersecting influences. This paper explores how adopted Eastern cultural practices such as yoga gained traction on American shores and entered the fabric of everyday and institutional life, in cluding the curricula of higher education in the late nineteenth and early de cades of the twentieth century. It then describes how American physical educa tor Josephine L Rathbone came to draw inspiration and knowledge from Indian gurus about the yoga postures she would incorporate in the first and rather significant program o f corrective physical education at Teachers College, Colum bia University during the 1930s and 1940s. As an early pioneer of the evolu tion o f Ling's medical gymnastics into a therapeutic stream o f physical activity which formed an important branch o f physical education, Rathbone was in strumental in maintaining a critical link with physical therapy and medicine, 'Correspondence to [email protected]. facilitating transnational connections and networks while pushing open a ¿loor to mind-body practices from the east. Her project was a small but illuminating aspect o f the shifting spaces o f "bodies in contact” in cross-cultural encounters and complex imperial networks emerging from "modernities" in both East and West. -

Nordic Journal of Educational History Vol. 4, no. 2 (2017), pp. 13–30 ISSN (online): 2001-9076 ISSN (print): 2001-7766 The Emergence of Physical Education as a Subject for Com- pulsory Schooling in the First Half of the Nineteenth Cen- tury: The Case of Phokion Heinrich Clias and Adolf Spiess Rebekka Horlacher Abstract • In general, schooling and nation-building are associated with the unifying role of language and history education, since language and culture are perceived as fundamental pillars of the nation. Less discussed—at least regarding the curriculum—is the role of physical education, even if physical education was a highly political issue in the first decades of the nineteenth century. Based on a case study of Switzerland and textbooks for physical education by Adolf Spiess and the activities of Phokion Heinrich Clias for the Bernese school, this article discusses how physical education, distinct from the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries’ care for the body, became a school subject of the nineteenth century compulsory schools and how it was related to the notion of nation and nation-building. It ar- gues that physical education became first part of the “modern” philanthropic education and schooling, was soon taken for granted as an essential curricular component of nation-building and lost thereby the political threat. Keywords • schooling, curriculum, physical education, nation-building, philanthropic education Normally, the history of physical education is traced back to the ideas and initia- tives of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778–1852), also known as “Turnvater Jahn” and to military requirements such as physical strength and military force.1 In doing so, a particular meaning of physical education is stressed: that of physical education as a school subject of the compulsory schools with a specific set of gymnastic exercises aiming at a healthy body (and soul) for the students making them valuable members of a political entity, that is, the nineteenth-century nation-state.
