Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Carers

To ensure a smooth transition, there will be changes to the way we accept parent or carer payments.

1. Direct deposits: As of 30 June 2017, we will no longer accept direct deposits into our current school bank account as we prepare to close this account and transition to the new one. Any payments made using direct deposit after this date cannot be properly allocated to a student’s account in a timely manner. Please ensure you have made any outstanding direct deposits before 30 June 2017.

2. EFTPOS payments: We will not be able to accept EFTPOS payments between 19 July and 24 July 2017. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding EFTPOS payments before 19 July 2017. From 25 July 2017, EFTPOS payments will be accepted as before.

3. Cash and cheque payments: Between 19 July 2017 and 24 July 2017, we will also not be able to accept payments by cash or cheque as we prepare to close our current bank account and transition to the new one. There has been a lot of extra–curricular activity happening during the Easter break. Students and our dedicated staff have been out and about winning ribbons at the Easter Show, travelling to Houston Texas for World Championship Robotics competitions and competing in elite sporting events across the globe. We are very proud of all of our students and thankful to have such dedicated staff. Some of the highlights you will find in this issue, but you can see more images and videos on our social pages, facebook, twitter and our new instagram page: @bossleyparkhs. Make sure to follow us for regular updates. We have also just signed up for a new school app which will be your one stop shop for all things Bossley. We will be in contact shortly with information on how to login to the school stream app.

Deputy’s Desk

The team represented us with pride and passion. There will be a presentation at the next CSG meeting which all parents are welcome to attend on Tuesday the 16th 6.30pm in the staff common room. There is a picture of the team departing from airport for the longest flight on the planet, 15hrs straight to Fort Worth, Texas. They then caught a second flight down into Houston for the competition in a huge exhibition centre where they tell us it was a 5 min walk from their home base to the competition arena, and what a playing field, it may look chaotic but the students knew exactly what they had to do. We were team 6434 and in a great alliance. The team ended up being 64th overall but 3rd for a Rookie team which is a huge achievement for their first time.

After the competition finished they didn’t waste any opportunity to visit other interesting sights like the Natural History Museum and of course NASA’s Johnson Space Centre, the home of ground control from the moon landings. We are very pleased that these student’s got to have such a great learning experience and encourage others to get involved and take part in future programs.

We would also like to acknowledge our excellent students whose work is still being exhibited around NSW. Ms Ager and the Visual Arts staff (pictured) have attended yet another Artexpress opening night, where the work of 2017 HSC student Mariam Abrim was on show. It will continue to tour through regional galleries for the rest of the year.

Wellbeing Report

by Ms Sari-Daher / Ms Chehade (HT Wellbeing)

Following up from the last newsletter, Year 11 and Year 12 will be receiving the single vaccination for the meningococcal disease later this term on Friday the 16th of June. The vaccination forms and information sheets were all distributed to students in Week 3 and they are to be returned to the Head Teacher Wellbeing office by Friday the 2nd of June. If you do not wish to have your child vaccinated at school they can receive this vaccination through their GP. If you have any concerns please contact the school to discuss them with Ms Sari or Ms Chehade.

Just a reminder as we start approaching the winter months that hoodies are not acceptable as part of the Bossley uniform. Students need to be in the correct school uniform every day. During colder days, students can wear long sleeve white shirts under their school shirt with the school jumper and jacket/blazer on top. Any occasion where a student is out of uniform requires them to see their deputy prior to roll-call or during recess to obtain a uniform pass. Just a reminder, if you have concerns or queries please contact your child’s year advisers.

On Wednesday the 3rd of May, our mental health student ambassadors attended the Youth Mental Health Summit at Casula Powerhouse. The students attended various workshops and heard from inspirational organisations such LIVIN and batyr about the effects of mental health issues on young people. Our students were able to gain outstanding resources and new perspectives which they will bring back to the school to implement in our Mind Matters framework for all students to benefit from. We are currently in our third year of becoming a Mind Matters school. Our students represented the school to such a high standard that our school was highly commended on the day with student Tayla Walsh been invited to share our school’s experience with the audience. The event also held a design a t-shirt competition which Year 11 student Holly Maniti won (along with four other students from

BPHS Athletics Carnival

The school’s annual Athletics Carnival, held at Blacktown Olympic International Sports Park on the 5th of April, ended off a busy Sports term. There was a strong turnout for students who came along to compete in both Track and Field events such as 100m Sprint, Long Jump, Discus and Shotput. By competing, students had the chance to gain a result in the top 2 of that event and go on to attend the Lansdowne Zone Athletics carnival being held in late term 2. There were also novelty events, a Year 12 dress up competition and race and plenty of cheering throughout the day, all which contributed towards house points.

If you are in Year 9 or 10 and are interested in science, technology, engineering or mathematics then you should consider applying for this program. We have had students attend in the past who loved it. It is a 3 or 4 day hands on science program conducted at a number of universities across Australia. There are a range of dates from September 2017 to January 2018 depending on which university you select. It costs $150 for 3 days or $200 for 4 days though this can be reduced with sponsorship from our local Rotary Club. See Mr Killeen or visit www.scienceexperience.com.au for more details.

What peace means to me

By Ms Hammond

Congratulations to Vicky Shabari of Year 10 who won a prize for her poetry entry in the 2016 Sam Lewis Peace and Environment Awards. A writing competition run by NSW Teachers Federation. Vicky was awarded a certificate and $25.00 prize money for her winning entry.

Below is Vicky’s poem titled What is peace?

What is peace? I looked around myself bound to the world around me trying so hard to know the answer

What is peace? some say its freedom other say its well-being but the answer doesn’t satisfy me

What is peace? The internet says its living without fear my parents say its the opposite of conflict Mr Gassner hands Vicky I am still not satisfied her certificate.

Peace smells like fresh roses in the garden peace smells like a cat and a mouse getting along peace sounds like relaxing, calm meaningful music peace taste like sweets peace feels like a dream coming true

What is peace? 5 letters, easy to say hard to get, pleasant to have

What is peace? Peace is something everyone wants yet few seem to find peace is related to the actions and attitudes of individuals

What is peace If you love someone you will find peace with them to me peace is love

Amazing leather- works at the Easter Show

By Mr Mai

It is clear that it was a successful year for Bossley Park at the Easter Show with the Agriculture team winning a number of ribbons across many catergories. Congratulations to Mr Killeen and the team for their well- deserved awards.

However, the agriculture team weren’t the only success story this year. Our very own deputy, Ms Ager, also showcased some of her exceptional leather-works, resulting in three first- prizes, one second-prize and two highly commended entries. These achivements have made Ms Ager the most successful leather-craft aritst for the second year in a row.

This year, many of the works were inspired by nature and utitlise Australian motifs, for example Turtle Reef, which took Ms Ager over 100 hours to complete. The symbolic meaning behind tthem is to encourage people to be more environmentally conscious.

According to National Geographic, there are 5.24 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Every year, countless seabirds and marine animals are killed due to pollution.
