Writing a short while ago about the McCarthy's, whose salmon gave himself up reminded me of a story Robert told me about a night fly fishing for sea trout on The Roughty River. Just after it got dark he had some great sport as it seemed a large shoal of sea trout had come into the Angling river. He caught a couple and then lost a few more, as if a switch had been turned off the lakes stopped. He caught nothing for quite a while. As you may know fishing for sea trout in the dark means you are fishing blind and any show of light will frighten the fish. Robert had to leave the water NWitho tes... to check his cast to discover that his favourite fly, a Peter Ross, was John O’Hare missing off the dropper. Pac A Sac has been designed and manufactured in Ireland and is available for the first time in Kerry, at Whyte's Centra Kenmare. Pac A Sac offers huge advantages over traditional waste collection methods, the Pac A Sac machine is cheap, clean, efficient and environmentally sound to use. The machine can be used at any time, once you have purchased a token in Whyte's Centra for €6. Simply bring your sacks of waste to Whyte's Centra when it's convenient for you, and dispose of over two sacks at a time (170 Litres) in the easy to use machine. By using the machine only when you have accumulated enough waste, means you save money, as much as 50% saving on some traditional collection methods. And because you can combine your waste disposal with a trip to Whyte's Centra, you are reducing the carbon foot print of your waste disposal, in that a refuse truck doesn't needed to trundle up and down all the roads to collect bins. Instead a truck is only needed once to empty the Pac A Sac machine containing over 400 sacks. Join the growing number people who are saving money by using Pac A Sac, and doing their bit to save the environment. A helpful tip for customers new to Pac A Sac is to divide your waste into several smaller bags, this will enable you to load the machine more effectively. Right then, time to get the ball rolling.

Whenever you can get outside you should launch a major attack in tidying up the garden. No point in doing anything else until this is done. Branches, twigs and the last of the autumn leaves need to be collected up, broken branches pruned back, cut back the dried stems of last season’s perennial plants, prune the summer flowering shrubs ( NOT the spring flowering ones) , sweep the patio, clean the pots and window boxes and pull up any weeds that are still in the flower and shrub beds. This tidy up will also remove the over wintering shelter for a lot of unwanted bugs and slugs. The robins and other birds will give you a hand as you go along. All of this should immediately give a fresh look to the garden. A bit of spring sunshine and the spirits Kenmare young people will also be lifted ! As for the flower garden, its fairly dismal at the moment. The overwintering Pansies and Primroses have been battered by wind, rain, snow and ice but will start performing again once the weather warms up a bit. Spring bulbs are way behind time at the moment but are beginning to shoot up above soil level now. The winter flowering heathers however must be the number one flowering plant at the moment as no matter what the weather it has continued to flower nonstop since November. But in a few weeks time there will be a good range of plants available for planting up containers. So over the next few weeks there is plenty to do and plenty to plan and contemplate.

Out in the garden centre we have just received this seasons supply of flower and vegetable seed. Seed potatoes and onion sets are due in by the end of January so its all ‘grow’ from now on...spring is coming !
