Air of optimism descends on Kenmare as Dromquinna Manor sold An air of optimism descended on 36’000 Motor Homes last year and the Time will tell if the presenter of the popular Brennan’s plan is to provide the finest RTE programme At Your Service can do it Kenmare last week as news that facilities to attract these to the area. Judging himself. Those who know them have little local hotelier, TV presenter and from the location and list of facilities they doubt about its success. Templenoe resident John Brennan plan to provide it seems to tick all the boxes. and his wife Gwen bought Dromquinna Manor, the 38 acre estate on Kenmare Bay. The Manor had been on the market for some time with a long list of celebrity chefs, American philanthropists and Dubai based Arabs rumoured to be the new owners. Closed for the last eight years the grounds and outhouses have fallen into a derelict state and hope that it would again contribute to the local economy dwindled. The once renowned wedding venue and country hotel seemed to be a distant memory. Many locals will have fond memories of sunny Sundays at the Boathouse with jazz lunches and long afternoons, often to the early hours of Monday morning. The main house dates from 1895 and was designed by JF Fuller, the same architect as designed the Park Hotel Kenmare, which is appropriate given its new owners. Reroofed in 2007 the main house is described by John Brennan as, ‘in much better condition than you would expect.’ Speaking to the Kenmare News John said, “Gwen and I are absolutely delighted. Dromquinna is a very special place and we hope to breath new life into it. Given the state of the hotel industry at the moment and the comprehensive range of accommodation that Kenmare offers a traditional hotel is simply not viable. The South West could do with an American style camping resort along the lines of the Poconos or Yosemite and the Dromquinna estate is perfect. This would bring new business to the area while local businesses like Dromquinna Stables for horse riding, Seafari for cruises and twice daily water taxi to Kenmare together with regular water transfer to Star Outdoor for water sport activities play an important part in our plan. In addition on site we will provide a Wine Bar and Bistro, BBQ Area, Sports Field, Play area while using the main house for conferences and banqueting. We will immediately commence restoration of the gardens and houses on the estate and all things going well we plan to open fully in April 2012.” The development will create 4 jobs immediately and ultimately something in the region of 40 John added. According to Failte Ireland, Caravan and Camping was the only sector of the tourism industry to grow last year. A decision on the planning permission was made before the due date of the 24 February 2011. Since the official awarding of the contract to Senator Construction I have been working with John Browner of the HSE and John Dolan of Glenbeigh Construction to ensure that the future of New Kenmare Hospital would be secure. Daly To prevent a new government from cutting the funding for the project I asked the HSE to issue, a letter of acceptance, to Glenbeigh Construction. On receipt of the Letter of Acceptance, reports... Glenbeigh Construction consulted with their legal team and John Dolan confirmed to me that this Letter is legally binding on the HSE. Glenbeigh construction hoped to be on site at the start of this Kenmare Hospital work month however there has been delay in removing a noxious weed from the site. Glenbeigh construction have informed me that to start on foundations despite the delay they now hope to begin phase 1 at the end of at end of April April. Planning permission for Kenmare Hospital was lodged with Kerry County Council on the 22 December 2010.

Traithlon Club Inaugural Kids Dualthon great success Kenmare triathlon club First annual Kids Duathlon We had 150 entrants in our first annual Kids Duathlon and a great day was had by all. There was a fantastic atmosphere with lots of excitement and energy. The first event was the 5 to 7 age group who set the day off with great enthusiasm, all entrants coming home safely to an ecstatic reception from the large crowd of spectators. This was quickly followed by the 8 to 10 category which had the largest entry of the day, such was their enthusiasm that they could hardly be contained out on the start line. Our final event was the 11 to 13’s who completed a most challenging course with utmost perseverance, they really ended the day on a high note. Every child put in maximum effort to complete their course and really have to be commended on the energy they put in, we truly have a great pool of young endurance athletes in our community. The whole day had an amazing community feeling to it with volunteers coming from all walks of life and Kenmare Tri Club is grateful to each one as the event could not have been run without them. We would like to thank all our sponsors who got together to provide the goodie bags for each athlete, they included Bia Bia, Jam, Hallisseys Cash & Carry, Super Valu, Kenmare Chamber of Commerce, Clancy Lewis Fruit & Veg and Kevin Murphy Fruit & Veg. We are most appreciative to Jack O’Shea of the Faungorth Activity Centre for providing such excellent facilities which so helped to make the day. See you all next year! This was their only loss of the day and they ended up as runners up. Again well done to everyone involved, the players, the coaches and the support of the parents as well. Well done to you all. With the season coming to an end it has been a very good season for the club with the seniors in their opening season performing well above what would be normally expected for a new team and the youngsters showing there is great depth in talent. So in the final days of the season we have a final for the seniors to look forward to and there is the Community games for our young players during the summer.
