Often people expect to be prescribed an pic Harry Masterson antibiotic to treat these conditions but as they are both viral in origin antibiotics are of no use unless there is a secondary bacterial infection (e.g. ear infection or infection of the sinuses). If there are any signs of a potential complication you should see your doctor. Colds are caused by rhinoviruses of which there are about 100 different types which are mutating all the time and as such it is impossible to formulate a vaccine against it. On the other hand flu is caused by a different type of virus (myxovirus) which is possible to vaccinate against. Vaccination is a safe and effective method to prevent infection by flu and is prepared every year using strains of the virus that are likely to be around that winter. The flu vaccine protects you for one year and should be taken annually to protect you especially if you are defined as being high risk. People at high risk of contracting the flu virus include: elderly people and people with chronic medical conditions such as: chronic heart conditions, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes mellitus and those with a low immune system. Though people often mix up colds and flu, their symptoms are entirely different. The common cold is an infection of the upper respiratory tract (your nose and throat); it is usually harmless; symptoms are usually of gradual onset and include: sneezing, runny nose, sore throat and cough. The flu is a more serious illness characterised by a sudden onset of symptoms including: fever, general aches and pains and often a harsh dry cough; this virus attacks the nose, throat and lungs. There is no ‘cure’ as such for colds and flu but there are medicines available that relieve the various symptoms. Bed rest and plenty of fluids is the best treatment for colds and flu. Over the counter Harry Masterson’s photograph shows some of the Rose Briars medicines can also help. Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine and brompheniramine also work to dry up nasal mucus. These can cause drowsiness so are useful if you have trouble sleeping but these medicines should not be taken if you have to do anything that requires alertness such as driving. Also it is important not to consume alcohol while taking these medicines. Volatile oils such as eucalyptus and camphor may also help and steam inhalation (with or without these oils) is also a good way to provide decongestion. Recently the Irish Medicines Board restricted some medicines including brompheniramine and oxymetazoline to ‘Ages over Six’ as no evidence could be found that these medicines are actually effective and because of the side effects. However paracetamol and ibuprofen can still be used to reduce temperature and to relieve aches and pains for children under six. If you catch a cold or flu try not to spread it any further by simple measures such as washing your hands and disposing of tissues in the bin after using them. If you have any questions on this topic please call into the pharmacy and we will be happy to advise you.

EIGHT WEEKS PASSED WITH NO ACTION! By early November, the dam was a textbook example of a structure in the final stage of terminal collapse. Only after intense and strident lobbying finally overrode the consulting engineers, did patching of the dam and draining of lake start last week. Although heavy rain at the end of the week tested the work, the patch held. It should hold through the winter. Be angry Management claims to have been doing maintenance, but that's physically impossible: much of the damage is eroded channels and voids in the deep interior that can't be accessed for repair without total demolition. Soon, a flash flood would build, with a wall of water cascading down the hill without warning. In fast flow, such waters pick up about their own mass of boulders and stuff, so 100,000 tons of debris would accompany the water. First casualty, undoubtedly, would be the Kenmare water intake at Carrig East. That would be gone and Kenmare would lose most of its water supply. Seconds later, the flood would hit the N71 Moll's Gap road, which would likely be swept away. Sooner rather than later, the sudden flood would find its way down the Finnihy and refocus, accelerating down the valley behind the school towards the choke point behind the Courthouse. Ouch! Look at this, the trout is chock full of cigarette butts, and so it was. The only conclusion we could come to was that people smoking and looking out over the bridge were Angling throwing the end of their cigarettes into the river and the trout was eating them.

He came in one day to tell me about an experience he had whilst fishing up in With Barfinnihy Lake. A young lad was fishing alongside him using a small orange John O’Hare bubble and a small cast, the next thing he was into a big rainbow trout who put up a good fight, the young lad was making heavy weather playing the fish so Joe got out his landing net to try and assist the young boy in landing it. In Joe's words, as Trout. Bloody Hell! I can never figure them out. We all suffer from stresses and strains from everyday life...... Sprains and strains incurred during sudden movement or excessive use bought on by overuse and constant repetitive motion affects us all especially working long hours and under pressure. Is this you? I mainly see three types of cases for example. My usual clients; chefs, waiters, farmers etc., who suffer pain in specific areas and come into me on a weekly basis for continuous relief. Then there is a more seasonal client, like a teacher or a working gardener who take a course of three treatments and I won’t normally see them again for a few months. Then there is general injury which I find mainly happens around the home for example gardening, DIY, cycling or just over working out, and again a course of three and some general advice on keeping the muscles stretched and loose will mean I hopefully won’t see them again. Everybody has a unique injury which in turn their body deals with differently. There are many ways to treat all the different symptoms the key is to recognise them and be aware that not everyone’s body is the same and that is why I use a combination of different techniques. A deep tissue massage focuses on relaxing and lengthening the affected tissues around the injury to improve their health, their flexibility, and their overall function (i.e. — to support the joints in particular, and the body in general). A stretching massage in which the primary goal is about promoting change in structure by releasing muscular and fascial restrictions. In some cases I may need to combine a treatment by performing some neuromuscular therapy which works on the belly of the muscle, identifying trigger points thus getting to the route of the problem, then calming the nervous and muscular system. If you feel that any of these treatments could help you or you just want to be relaxed and pampered then there is a solution for you. We have come across some interesting photographs recently and a selection An hours massage is €40 and a half hour massage is only €20 is up on the Kenmare chronicle facebook page. The magic of Christmas will be showcased once again in South Kerry this festive season when Molly Gallivan's Cottage and Farm in Bonane, near Kenmare, will be transformed into a magical Winter Wonderland. For the last two years Santa’s Christmas show at Molly Gallivan’s cottage ‘Memories of Christmas Past’ has caught the imagination of both young and old. Santa’s dramatic entry down the chimney is one of the shows highlights which is full of fun and gifts for all children. Adults will relive their childhood dreams while children will enjoy the magic and fun of this traditional Christmas experience. Santa and Mrs Claus have chosen Molly's enchanting 200 year old cottage for this fascinating show which begins with Santa's dramatic entry down the chimney. Santa will meet each child, have a nice friendly chat and then give them a gift. Mrs Claus will be busy preparing for Santa’s big journey, baking bread over the open fire, making butter and ironing Santa’s clothes. However, she will take time to show you around the cottage and Santa’s bedroom, making the visit a unique personal journey in the lead up to Christmas. Other events on these magical evenings include following the pathway to Bethlehem and visiting the live crib. Santa’s chocolate factory should be a big hit. You can also enjoy watching a Christmas movie in Santa’s unique thatched cottage. Mince pies, mulled wine and other niceties can be purchased in Molly’s old tea ship and you can browse in their unique Christmas gift shop while you are there. A photographer is on hand to capture this magical experience, but you may also bring your camera, and don’t forget warm clothing! All bookings to be made in advance on 087 2433894 / 064 6640714.
