On an otherwise quiet January weekend recently Star Outdoors Kenmare was a hive of activity. It was great to see fleets of boats sailing up and down Kenmare Bay. Almost 30 sailing boats with white, red, blue and grey sails dotted Kenmare Bay. “All our facilities were put into use,” said PJ O’Sullivan Manager of Star Outdoors. They moved us on to the next phase in our development as bowlers! We have bought 16 further bowls so that instead of just practising we can now form teams and play, learning the rules and honing our skills. The day was very much appreciated by the members and we can look forward to much improved skills over the following months. We will keep the club running over the summer months. Some members are going to Bantry in April for 4 days of bowling, while others are planning to go to Mayo at the end of September for 5 days of bowling competition. There is still a very limited number of places for those wishing to take up the sport so anyone interested should contact Vera at 6640626.

The girls competed well in in the Munster Junior Colleges final on Saturday 29th Jan. Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine led by a point at half time, but the Dungarvan side proved too strong in the end, winning out eventually by 6 points. A tough battle right throughout. St Augustines were firm favourites, being a physically strong side. Pobalscoil Kenmare put up a tough battle, and led by a point at half time. However Dungarvan fought back and their strength, along with two quick second half goals, sealed the deal. 4-8 v 2-8. Pobalscoil only lose 4 players for next year and had had a total of 9 first year students on their starting 15. Best for Kenmare were Orla Randles at full back cleared her lines superbly. The entire half back line of Clodagh Quinlan, Ann Marie O'Mahony and Laura Hallissey did all they could to hold defence, but the Dungarvan number 11 was a powerhouse and recieved player of the match. Claire O'Sullivan, flanked by Denise Burns at mid field, really held their own, and Claire finished with a total of 6 points. Chloe Hawker up front did some endless running and always posed a threat. Denise Burns hit the post twice in the second half and never stopped running. It must also be mentioned that Niamh O'Sullivan in goal pulled off some fabulous goals in both halfs. ThereKenmare has been a full series ofRugby fixtures over the lastClub month with games taking place in less than ideal conditions because of the winter weather, but the school field held up to enable the senior team to play against Bandon and Skibbereen at home, the under 13’s to play Dingle and a very successful under age Blitz between Kenmare, Killarney and Killorglin as well as the Pobalscoil u16 team who played Killorglin. The Senior team had a busy schedule with games every weekend. Since finishing the West Munster League with a win against Iveragh back in January the next series of fixtures centred around the Mick Barry Cup. In the draw for this Cup Taking part in Kenmare would be at home to Bandon and Skibbereen and the long jump at away ties to Old Christians in Cork and Listowel on alternate the Munster weekends.
