Since our establishment by the Secretary of War and Chief of Staff of the Army in 1942, Army Emergency Relief has been there for Soldiers and their Families. As we celebrate our 75th anniversary this year, our purpose - to alleviate Soldier financial distress - is just as relevant today as it was in 1942. That purpose manifests itself in the $1.7B in assistance to 3.7M members of the Army Family over these past nearly eight decades. Our relevancy is underscored by the fact that more than half of that $1.7B was provided since 9-11. The AER team is proud to be “Helping the Army Take Care of its Own.” It is the dedication and passion of the AER Headquarters family and the magnificent AER Officers stationed across the globe who provide the kind of care and compassion that truly makes a difference in resolving financial issues for our Soldiers. The global AER team, faithfully supported by IMCOM and Garrison Commanders and their Command Sergeants Major, clearly makes a difference every day in holding true to the long-standing AER motto of “Soldiers Helping Soldiers.” I thank them and all leaders from the squad to General Officer level for their outstanding efforts in promoting the benefits of Army Emergency Relief and encouraging donations. In addition to support from the Army leadership and our magnificent Board of Managers, AER has also enjoyed the leadership of superb Directors over its 75-year history. Our most recent Director, LTG Robert F. Foley, retired in December 2016 after leading AER for more than eleven years. LTG Foley’s legacy of “finding a way to say yes” continues to drive us every day in our mission to assist Soldiers and their Families. In January 2017, AER welcomed LTG Raymond V. Mason as AER’s ninth Director. He has already demonstrated his dedication to our mission and we wish him well as he continues to provide support to the Army’s most precious assets---Soldiers and their Families. When faced with financial hardship, Soldiers and Family members can always place their trust and confidence in Army Emergency Relief, which consistently receives the highest possible rating – 4 stars – from Charity Navigator. Our unwavering stewardship and efficient operations allow us to return 84 cents of every dollar donated right back to Soldiers and Families - among the highest of any US charity. We are proud to serve those who serve our great Army, past, present and in the future. I’m fully confident that AER will continue to live up to our “Legacy of Caring” for the next 75 years and beyond…When We Were Needed We Were There! Dennis J. AER relies on three sources of income to support this assistance - loan repayments, donations, and investment income. All three sources of income originate with Soldiers’ contributions. For Army Emergency Relief, “Soldiers Helping Soldiers” isn’t just a slogan, it’s a truth that has helped the Army take care of its own for 75 years. Fundraising Administrative 3 cents of 13 cents of every dollar every dollar Programs 84 cents of every dollar Donations Disbursed to Soldiers and Families $9.4M $69M Through 75 years of operating, AER has seen a lot of changes, both within the Army and with the needs of the Soldiers who serve. AER has always made assistance - not fundraising - our primary purpose. This dedication is reflected in our Goldstar Gold Participant rating, our 4-Star, 100 out of 100 rating on Charity Navigator, and in a review of our expenses. 4 CARING ADAPTABILITY • We treat everyone with respect and dignity.
