Mariology is not a superfluous Catholic addition to theology, an “add-on” if you’re interested. Rather, Mariology cuts to the heart of the Gospel.
The reason is that Mary’s life is completely caught up in and oriented toward Christ, and as such she played an indispensable role in salvation history . Christians realized this as early as the 2nd century, when the early Church Fathers proclaimed Mary the “ New Eve .”
While Jesus Christ was the one who accomplished salvation, Mary played an important supportive role, bringing the Messiah into the world.
The song “Mary the Dawn,” written by Fr. Justin Mulcahy, C.P. in the mid-20th century, is a beautiful meditation on this central truth using analogies, many of which come right from the Old Testament. It is beautifully rendered by the Daughters of St. Paul!
Mary the dawn, Christ the Perfect Day; Mary the gate, Christ the Heavenly Way! Mary the root, Christ the Mystic Vine; Mary the grape, Christ the Sacred Wine ! By all things blest while endless ages run. Amen.

Religious Brothers Day, an initiative of the national Brothers Think Tank, gives all of us in the Church and beyond, an opportunity to celebrate the mission and identity of the Religious Brother. We salute Religious Brothers around the world, but particularly those who minister in the Archdiocese of Detroit.
According to the document “Identity and Mission of the Religious Brother in the Church” published by the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life,” the Brother cannot hide. On the contrary, he “experiences the impulse to go out to encounter and embrace God. In contemplating the saving work of God, the Brother discovers himself to be an instrument which God wants to use to make the covenant, God’s love and concern for the weakest, more visible.”
Let’s Celebrate All of Our Jubilarians!
On May 18, 2019, we will honor all of the Religious Jubilarians of the Archdiocese of Detroit for their generous lives of dedication to Christ and service to the People of God. We pay special tribute to religious who have reached profession and ordination anniversaries of 25, 50, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80 and 85 years in religious life.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen Joins the Ranks

Congratulations to the many Capuchins and volunteers who have served in the ministry of the Soup Kitchen, a desperately needed service, especially at the height of the depression overtaking the vast majority of the United States in the late 1920’s.
The Capuchin Soup Kitchen (CSK), founded in 1929 by Father Solanus Casey and Herman Buss, celebrates 90 years of outstanding service to the neediest of Detroiters.
The friars at St. Bonaventure Monastery initially established the kitchen informally by providing food from their own stores, as was the practice of their Order. As the porter or doorkeeper of the monastery, Father Solanus Casey, now Blessed) would provide each person who came seeking assistance with a cup of coffee and a sandwich.
The line outside of the Capuchin Monastery eventually grew up to 2,000 people each day, making it impossible for the friars to serve everyone from the monastery kitchen. Herman Buss, who served as the spiritual director for the Secular Franciscans, requested their assistance in creating a formal soup kitchen. With the Franciscans’ help, the friars were able to move their services into the Third Order Hall facility located next to the monastery chapel. The Capuchin Soup Kitchen first officially opened its doors on November 2, 1929 . Buss was appointed the first director of the soup kitchen while Father Casey continued to serve the monastery as porter. Capuchin friar Mathias Nack, OFM, Cap., the guardian of St. Bonaventure Monastery, took over the position of director in 1933. In order to sustain the work being done at CSK the Capuchin Charity Guild was created in 1942 to raise funds for the soup kitchen.
The Capuchin Soup Kitchen has moved from the Third Order Hall and currently has two facilities for its meal program. In the 1970's, the soup kitchen expanded its services to include Jefferson House, a drug rehabilitation program for indigent men; R.O.P.E (Reaching Our Potential Everyday) Program associated with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen's On the Rise Bakery. On November 18, 2017 the Capuchin Soup Kitchen's Co-founder Father Solanus Casey, OFM, Cap., was beatified at Ford Field with almost 70,000 people in attendance.
Special thanks to Brother Jerry Johnson, OFM Cap., current director, and all friars, volunteers, donors, and staff who contribute to the success of this vital charity in the heart of Detroit.

Join Detroit Churches Pilgrimage
Attend a one-day pilgrimage on Saturday, June 1, 2019 to explore the roots of our faith in Detroit by visiting our oldest and most historic churches.
Start the day with a tour of Old St. Mary’s in Greektown. Completed in 1885, the Roman style combines facets of Pisan Romanesque and Venetian Renaissance, creating a unique and beautiful structure. Enjoy time for reflection before departing to the Solanus Casey Center. Upon arrival, participate in a tour and get to know Blessed Solanus Casey, who will likely be the first saint from Detroit. View the remains of Bl. Solanus Casey which were exhumed and reinterred in a new tomb as part of the canonical process preceding the saintly friar’s beatification Mass on November 18th, 2017.
After lunch , visit St. Joseph Oratory, currently undergoing a historic renewal under the leadership of the Canons of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, who have led the local faithful since October 2016. Through a tour of the Oratory, learn how the Canons have brought Latin Masses, regular devotions, liturgical instruction, and an active parish life into St. Joseph Oratory. As a result, the parish community continues to grow, enriching both younger and older individuals and families from many backgrounds.
Proceed to Most Holy Redeemer Church, once estimated to be one of the largest parishes in North America. Upon arrival, celebrate Mass with Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron. Special intentions will include our mission to Unleash the Gospel. After Mass, conclude the pilgrimage with a guided tour of Holy Redeemer, currently being served by the priests, brothers, and sisters of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT).

Christian Centering Prayer Program
On Thursdays, May 30-June 13, 6:30-8 p.m. at River House – IHM Spirituality Center, Judith Bonini, IHM, and Julie Vieira, IHM, will present the three-week series, “Praying without Words.”
In the midst of the busyness and noise of everyday life, Christian centering prayer is a way to pray that is quieting, reassuring of God’s presence and open to God’s desired action. Come and learn both the method and the power of this peaceful way of prayer. Sister Judith ministers as a spiritual/retreat director. Sister Julie serves as the director of the IHM Spirituality Centers. Together, they bring passion and compassion for accompanying others in their spiritual quest, open always to finding God in new and surprising ways.

Silent Retreat for Sisters at Manresa June 9-15, 2019
Each summer the Manresa Jesuit Retreat House sets aside time for religious women. The director of the sisters’ retreat normally gives two conferences each day. There will be ample opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation or consultation with a director or members of our staff .The remainder of the day is open for private prayer and reflection.
Retreat theme: “ Jesus’ Encounters with Women” Directors: Fr. Fran Daly SJ and Sister Kathie Budesky IHM.
Arrival begins on Sunday, 3pm with Eucharist at 5:15 pm. Departure is the following Saturday after a 12 noon lunch.
