Cooper: Inventing a French Tyrant: Crisis, Propaganda, and the Origins of Fénelon’s Ideal King (Under the direction of Jay M. Smith and Chad Bryant) In the final decades of the seventeenth century, many voices across Europe vehemently criticized Louis XIV, the most well-known coming from the pen of François Fénelon from within Versailles itself. There were, however, many other critics of varied backgrounds who participated in this common discourse of opposition. From the 1660s to the 1690s the authors of these pamphlets developed a stock of critiques of Louis XIV that eventually coalesced into a negative depiction of his entire style of government. His manner of ruling was rejected as monstrous and tyrannical. Fénelon's ideal king, a benevolent patriarch that he presents as an alternative to Louis XIV, was constructed in opposition to the image of Louis XIV developed and disseminated by these international authors. In this paper I show how all of these authors engaged in a process of borrowing, recopying, and repackaging to create a common critical discourse that had wide distribution, an extensive, transnational audience, and lasting impact for the development of changing ideals of sovereignty. -

Why bother with words in a work devoted to things? asks Pierre Bayle, early modern philosopher and troublemaker extraordinaire. That is: why should the author of an historical-critical dictionary, which deals with things and acts and events, with the content of words rather than with words themselves, concern himself with such a trivial matter as the politeness of style?1 This question, of the relationship between words and things, and the responsibilities of authors using words to describe things, is at the centre of Bayle’s curious semi-provocative semi-apologetic essay or Éclaircissement sur les Obscénités. It is also part of an age-old argument attributed to the Cynics and sometimes the Stoics, which would become a locus communis for early modern discussions of obscenity. -

Traversing muddy roads and wintry seas, he first joined the duke of York in Edinburgh and then set sail for The Hague. There he informed Thomas Ken, the almoner of the Princess of Orange and the future bishop of Bath and Wells, that he intended to take communion at Ken’s Anglican service.2 This was one way to escape charges of crypto-catholicism.3 Another was to make himself scarce. -

Abstract: The modern Polish-Lithuanian Republic drew the attention of many French political authors like Théodore de Bèze, Jean Boucher, Jean Bodin, Henri de Boulainvilliers, Montesquieu, Voltaire or Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The Sarmatian State appeared in French political literature in 1573, when the French prince Henri de Valois was elected king of the Polish-Lithuanian Republic, until 1795, when it disappeared from the map of Europe. It appeared not only in political treaties but also in pamphlets, manifestos and travel literature. This article aims at analysing this continuous presence, which constitutes a fascinating key for reading the French political debates of the modern era. Keywords: Modern republicanism; modern absolutism; mixed monarchy; modern political thought; European history; history of representations; Franco-Polish relationships. In his monography, Olivier Christin wrote about the elections in medieval and modern Europe: “It is precisely by recalling that past that we can understand some of the issues discussed today about the forms of democratic political life”2. This way, the French historian underlined the meaning of political concepts and practices inherited from the past. When talking about the electoral phenomenon in the modern era, one cannot forget the experience of the Polish- Lithuanian Republic. Yet, it seems that it was still poorly apprehended. In 2008, Marc Bélissa made an important statement concerning French eighteenth century studies: if the significance of the English or the Swedish model in the enlightenment republican thought was quite well-known in France and Europe, the influence of the Rzeczpospolita was often forgotten3. -

PIERRE BAYLE AND HUMAN RIGHTS: LA LIBERTÉ DE LA CONSCIENCE THE GENESIS OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN WESTERN DEMOCRACY Robert Fulton Northern Illinois University It is a monster who during peace makes the evils of war, and whose pride knows no laws.1 In 1685, Louis XIV sent shock waves throughout Europe by revoking the longstanding Edict of Nantes, thereby signaling that he was ready to re-embrace Catholicism as the official religion of the kingdom. In doing so he created one of the largest diasporas of early modern times.2 More than 200,000 of the approximately one million Protestants fled France, using any means available, and some of the Huguenot émigrés formed a small but vocal group of exiles. Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) and Pierre Jurieu (1637-1713) were two Huguenots refugees who left France for the Netherlands even before the Revocation. However, the two of them could not have been more distinct in terms of their political beliefs. While both Bayle and Jurieu defended against ideological assaults by French Catholic intellectuals, Jurieu was just as vehement in his theoretical disputes with fellow Protestants. Bayle, despite his broader (and Enlightenment) reputation as a skeptic, was meanwhile advocating tolerance with respect to all religious beliefs. Jones, Ph.D. This dissertation examines the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in late seventeenth-century France and its connections to the absolutist monarchy of Louis XIV and the shifting educational ideals of the period. Focusing on the detailed implementation of the edict in Paris, it discusses the importance of the development of a new bureaucratic structure that allowed Louis XIV to remain relatively involved in the details of implementation, while entrusting the daily operations to individuals loyal to the crown. Placing the Revocation in the context of administrative expansion, growing central control, and idealized Christian kingship, Louis XIV’s decision to end toleration of Protestantism in France becomes clearer. It also argues that education and social reform were central in the conception and execution of this edict, and that the Revocation was part of a moment in which conversion through education appeared possible. In combining religious conversion and education in an effort to form Protestants into French Catholics, Louis XIV built upon an absolutist vision of education and connected his efforts to a flourishing debate.
