Leibniz, Bayle and the Controversy on Sudden Change Markku Roinila (In: Giovanni Scarafile & Leah Gruenpeter Gold (ed.), Paradoxes of Conflicts, Springer 2016) Leibniz’s metaphysical views were not known to most of his correspondents, let alone to the larger public, until 1695 when he published an article in Journal des savants, titled in English “A New System of the Nature and Communication of Substances, and of the Union of the Soul and Body” (henceforth New System).1 The article raised quite a stir. Perhaps the most interesting and cunning critique of Leibniz’s views was provided by a French refugee in Rotterdam, Pierre Bayle (1647−1706) who is most famous for his Dictionnaire Historique et Critique (1697). The fascinating controversy on Leibniz’s idea of pre-established harmony and a number of other topics lasted for five years and ended only when Bayle died. In this paper I will give an overview of the communication, discuss in detail a central topic concerning spontaneity or a sudden change in the soul, and compare the views presented in the communication to Leibniz’s reflections in his partly concurrent New Essays on Human Understanding (1704) (henceforth NE). I will also reflect on whether the controversy could have ended in agreement if it would have continued longer. The New System Let us begin with the article that started the controversy, the New System. The article starts with Leibniz’s objection to the Cartesian doctrine of extension as a basic way of explaining motion. Instead, one should adopt a doctrine of force which belongs to the sphere of metaphysics (GP IV 478). -

Danna Kostroun, histoire, Indiana University, Purdue University-Indianapolis, Etats- Unis et résidente 2016-2017 à l’IEA de Nantes Action against Uncertainty : The Case of Port-Royal This paper examines the relationship between action and uncertainty at Port Royal. The Cistercian convent of Port-Royal-des-Champs became famous in the 17th century as the center of a Catholic reform movement known as Jansenism. The community at Port-Royal was made up of the nuns who lived in the convent and a group of lay men and women who lived on the convent farm in pious retreat. The community is famous not only for its role in religious reform, but for the intellectual work of its members, who published philosophical and polemical treatises on a number of subjects. Port-Royal was an institution designed to confront uncertainty. Its members recognized many forms of uncertainty and developed different responses to them. The first form of uncertainty dealt with the relationship between humans and God. To confront this uncertainty, Port-Royal adhered to tradition (St. Augustine’s writings on grace) and performed acts of routine, ritual, and repetition (i.e. Blaise Pascal’s human “machine” behavior). The next source of uncertainty dealt with the natural universe and human institutions. To confront this uncertainty, they produced treatises on logic, education, grammar, medicine, and other fields, through which they sought to establish a normative order through reason. A third source of uncertainty was that created by human passions. Humans generated uncertainty when they allowed passions (such as a desire for wealth, domination, or power) to obscure, blind, or otherwise obstruct reason. -

PREFACE This thesis is the result of a two-year study of the literary- rhetorical tradition and its relationship to music, a relationship which ultimately- led to the Baroque doctrine of the affections. Rhetoric, in the ancient and non-pe jorativs sense, is a subject about which most per sons in this country know very little ; in modern times it appears to be reserved for classical scholars. A wealth of information is available, however, and in the first two chapters of this study an attempt is made to capsulize this history of rhetoric for the non-rhetorician and especial ly the musician. -

Cooper: Inventing a French Tyrant: Crisis, Propaganda, and the Origins of Fénelon’s Ideal King (Under the direction of Jay M. Smith and Chad Bryant) In the final decades of the seventeenth century, many voices across Europe vehemently criticized Louis XIV, the most well-known coming from the pen of François Fénelon from within Versailles itself. There were, however, many other critics of varied backgrounds who participated in this common discourse of opposition. From the 1660s to the 1690s the authors of these pamphlets developed a stock of critiques of Louis XIV that eventually coalesced into a negative depiction of his entire style of government. His manner of ruling was rejected as monstrous and tyrannical. Fénelon's ideal king, a benevolent patriarch that he presents as an alternative to Louis XIV, was constructed in opposition to the image of Louis XIV developed and disseminated by these international authors. In this paper I show how all of these authors engaged in a process of borrowing, recopying, and repackaging to create a common critical discourse that had wide distribution, an extensive, transnational audience, and lasting impact for the development of changing ideals of sovereignty. -

Why bother with words in a work devoted to things? asks Pierre Bayle, early modern philosopher and troublemaker extraordinaire. That is: why should the author of an historical-critical dictionary, which deals with things and acts and events, with the content of words rather than with words themselves, concern himself with such a trivial matter as the politeness of style?1 This question, of the relationship between words and things, and the responsibilities of authors using words to describe things, is at the centre of Bayle’s curious semi-provocative semi-apologetic essay or Éclaircissement sur les Obscénités. It is also part of an age-old argument attributed to the Cynics and sometimes the Stoics, which would become a locus communis for early modern discussions of obscenity. -

Marc Serge Rivière, "The Age of Louis XIV" Marc Serge Rivière THE AGE OF LOUIS XIV: VOLTAIRE'S COMING OF AGE AS A PHILOSOPHER-HISTORIAN In 1994, scholars from all over the world met at congresses in Paris, Oxford, Melbourne and other centres of learning to celebrate the tercentenary of Voltaire's birth. Although there is some doubt as to the exact date of his birth, we know that he was baptized in November 1694. It is accordingly fitting now to reflect on Voltaire's achievements as a historian, for he regarded himself first as a dramatist, next as a historian and last as an essayist and a Conteur, even if he is fondly remembered nowadays as the author of Candide. Voltaire's documentation for his historical works was impressive. In this.respect, The Age of Louis XIV (1751) has as sound a basis as could be expected in its day, and its author has been deemed to be the father of modern "scientific" history. 1 What emerges from a study of the sources utilised for The Age of Louis XIV is that, although Voltaire scorned erudite working habits, in so far as he excluded documents such as extracts of treatises and gave few references, he clearly took his duty as a historian with a degree of seriousness equalled amongst his French contemporaries only by Montesquieu. He was fully aware that his com- petence in historiography would be judged first and foremost on the reliability of his evidence and on the degree of accuracy which he would achieve. Although The Age of Louis XIV did not occupy him exclusively, he sought for about twenty years or so (1732-1751), to add to the data and material which he had begun to gather as early as the late 1720s. -
