CHAPTER 9 Herodotus’ Reputation in Latin Literature from Cicero to the 12th Century Félix Racine Introduction Herodotean scholarship has paid little attention to the reception of the Histories in the Latin West before the Renaissance. Arnaldo Momigliano’s sem- inal article “The Place of Herodotus in the History of Historiography”, to take a celebrated example, considers in turn ancient Greek views on Herodotus and those of Renaissance scholars, but has little to say on Latin opinions save those of Cicero.1 And why should it not be so? Few Western readers of Herodotus are known from the Imperial era, and virtually none from the Middle Ages. A closer look at the evidence reveals a more nuanced picture of the vicis- situdes of Herodotus’ name in the West, and of stories originally found in his Histories. Let us consider the 12th-century French scholar Peter Comestor (“The Voracious”, so named from the many books he avidly read), who wrote an exegetical and historical commentary on the Scriptures, the Historia Scholastica. Comestor’s source material was broad indeed—it included classi- cal and Christian authors (in Latin; he knew very little Greek) and his historical horizon embraced not only Sacred history but also classical Rome, Greece and Persia. Inserted between a discussion of the Book of Habakkuk and the end of the Babylonian Captivity is an account of Cyrus’ life focusing on his birth and childhood, much altered since its first telling by Herodotus. The world of Greek comedy has always been a mysterious universe for amateurs. The naive enthusiasm of Renaissance intellectuals, who, immediately after the publication of the editio princeps of the eleven Aristophanic comedies, edited their complete translations (without footnotes!) in Latin (Andreas Divus) and Italian (the Rositini brothers), has decreased as time has passed. In contrast to the fate of Greek tragedies, Aristophanes’ and Menander’s comedies have always been rare- ly performed; even the most recent translations cannot refrain from using ex- planatory notes if they want their readers to understand the nuances of the Greek text. Apart from the two main authors, the other comic poets (Cratinus, Eupolis, Alexis, Diphilus, Philemon) are almost unknown, in spite of the good reputation they had in the ancient world. From this point of view the difference with tragedy is even greater: among the majority of people, the three tragic poets of the fifth century BCE enjoy a much wider popularity than the single representative of ancient Greek comedy; Menander’s popularity (a fairly recent one, based on the papyrological discoveries of the last century) cannot compete with that of his Roman followers, Plautus and Terence. Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -

chapter 2 Terence’s Plays: Commentary and Illustration from Manuscript to Print 2.1 Terence as an Educational Classic: Text and Commentary from Antiquity to Medieval and Renaissance Europe Publius Terentius Afer, or Terence, was the author of six plays which premiered in Rome between 166 and 160 bc— Andria, Heauton timorumenos, Eunuchus, Phormio, Hecyra, and Adelphoe. Some information on the circumstances of the production of each play can be obtained from the didascaliae,1 while the prologues reveal that they were produced in a vibrant and at times vitriolic literary environment. A biographical tradition concerning Terence only devel- oped much later; in the early second century ad Suetonius wrote a Life, which was subsequently supplemented and attached to the commentary of Aelius Donatus (for which see below), while in Late Antiquity it appears that another very brief Life, known as the Vita Ambrosiana, was composed, which provides a few facts independent of the Life found in Donatus.2 In these traditions, we are told that Terence came originally from Carthage in Northern Africa (hence his cognomen, Afer, or ‘the African’); that he was taken to Rome at a young age as a slave, and was adopted and freed there by a senator, Terentius Lucanus, from whom he took his name, and by whom he was educated; that he subsequently was befriended by some of the leading figures in Roman society associated with Scipio Africanus Aemilianus (185/ 4– 129 bc); and that he died young on a trip to Greece, where he had gone in order to purchase more comedies to translate. -

THE SABINE NECROPOLIS OF COLLE DEL FORNO The necropolis of Colle del Forno, brought to light during the excava- tions conducted from 1970 to 1980 by the Centro di Studio per l’Archeologia Etrusco-Italica of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), is the nucleus of the cemetery area of Eretum, a Sabine settlement (SANTORO 1977; SANTORO 1983). Ancient itineraries and circumstantial evidence suggest that this settle- ment was situated not far from the Tiber at the 17th, 19th or 20th mile of the Via Salaria, where it was intersected by the Via Nomentana (Fig. 1). Specific surveys conducted at the site (GIGLI, SANTORO 1995) verified that the information gathered from historical sources and the hypotheses for- mulated by topographers of the past century, in particular Ashby and Ogilvie, were reliable, and that the settlement on the hills of Casacotta, adjacent to the hill of Colle del Forno, did in fact already exist in the first phase of the Iron Age. During the second half of the 7th and the first half of the 6th century BC, the settlement expanded over an area of about 20 hectares and was organised according to urban parameters, with well defined spaces being used for the settlement and the necropolises. The excavations of the necropolis of Colle del Forno, which, thanks to its geographical location is an excellent case study for archaeological research, have allowed us to gather a great deal of information about the social and cultural history of the settlement, especially in relation to the transitional phase at the end of the 7th and the beginning of the 6th century BC.
