Box 136 ISSN: 1087-7746 Madison, FL 32341-0136 Arianna Byrd Griffin Livingston Volume 17, Issue 1 The Madison County, Florida Genealogical News Jan-Mar 2012 I went searching for an ancestor. I cannot find him still. He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will. He married where a courthouse burned. He mended all his fences. He avoided any man who came to take the US census. He always kept his luggage packed, this man who had no fame. And every 20 years or so, this rascal changed his name. His parents came from Europe. They could be on some list of passengers to the USA, but somehow they got missed. And no one else anywhere is searching for this man So, I play geneasolitaire to find him if I can. I'm told he's buried in a plot, with tombstone he was blessed but the weather took engraving and some vandal took the rest. He died before the county clerks decided to keep records, No family bible has emerged in spite of all my efforts. To top it off this ancestor, who caused me many groans. Just to give me one more pain, betrothed a girl named JONES. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ruthptb/Genealogy_Quotes_And_Poems.html Contents THE LIVINGSTON FAMILY ............................................................................................................... 5 ROBERT LIVINGSTON .......................................................................................................5 GILBERT LIVINGSTON ......................................................................................................5 CORNELIUS LIVINGSTON ................................................................................................5 CORNELIUS LIVINGSTON ................................................................................................5 THOMAS LIVINGSTON ......................................................................................................6 THOMAS JOHN LIVINGSTON...........................................................................................6 CAPTAIN THOMAS JOHN LIVINGSTON ........................................................................6 MADISON CAMILLUS LIVINGSTON...............................................................................7 ARIANNA BYRD GRIFFIN .................................................................................................8 MARTHA CAMILLUS LIVINGSTON ................................................................................8 SUSAN LIVINGSTON HARTRIDGE .................................................................................8 ARIANNA PERKINS SMITH ............................................................................................10 ANNIE CLARKSON DAVIS ..............................................................................................10 LEAH HARTRIDGE DAVIS MERRITT............................................................................12 PARKE CABELL DAVIS JERVIS .....................................................................................12 UPCOMING GENEALOGY CONFERENCES .................................................................................. 23 DEATH NOTICES/OBITUARIES ...................................................................................................... 13 MADISON COUNTY REGISTERED VOTERS 1868-1900 (CON’T) .............................................. 16 ORGANIZATION OF THE MADISON CEMETERY ASSOCIATION IN FEBRUARY 1907 ....... 21 RENEWAL/NEW MEMBERSHIP FORM ......................................................................................... 25 2 Volume 17, Issue 1 The Madison County, Florida Genealogical News Jan-Mar 2012 Madison Camillus Livingston 3 Volume 17, Issue 1 The Madison County, Florida Genealogical News Jan-Mar 2012 Dear Society Members, What is going to happen with all your family treasures or family history when you are no longer around to "treasure" them? Hopefully you will know where to put them so that they are not only protected but also available for others to enjoy. The Treasures of Madison County, Inc. was created to do just that, to develop, foster, and promote Madison County's cultural heritage and its arts as experiences central to the lives of the citizens of Madison County. A trip into the Treasures Museum is a trip into the past with wonderful memories attached. If you find yourself with information or treasures to share, please don't hesitate to visit your genealogy society or the Treasures of Madison County. Recently descendants of the Livingston family from Jacksonville, Florida donated not only an oil portrait of Arianna Byrd Griffin Livingston to the Museum but also many papers reflecting a family member's search into her past--bringing them right back to Madison, Florida. We, in turn, were blessed with the opportunity to study those papers and share a photo of the portraits of Arianna and Madison Livingston with you. We have not attempted to provide you a full genealogy of the Madison Livingston family, but just some glimpses into their family. One thing that struck us was the strength and power of the women in the family. We thank the Treasures and hope you enjoy this newsletter. As much as we hate to do it, we need to remind everyone that we can't survive without your dues. Not only are the costs of producing the newsletters increasing, but also we are expecting another hike in the mailing costs. As promised, we will try to keep the cost of a membership to $25.00 a year, but we can only do that with your support. Ann LIVINGSTON HISTORY The position of the Livingston family in America and England is one of unquestioned honor and prominence. The descendants of the various branches of the family in America spread to practically every state of the Union and aided as much in the growth of the country as their ancestors aided in the founding of the nation. They have been known for their courage, moral and physical strength, integrity, piety, and fortitude. Among the Livingston's who fought as officers in the War of the Revolution were Captains Abraham, Gilbert James, and Henry P.--of New York; Captain William of South Carolina; Lieutenant-Colonel Henry B. of New Jersey; Colonels Henry, James and Peter R. of New York; Major Henry Beckman and Lieutenant-Colonels Richard and William Smith of New York. William, Henry, Alexander, John, James, Robert, Phillip, and Gilbert are some of the Christian names most highly favored by the family for its male members. The photo shown on the cover is listed in the Florida Portrait Index compiled for the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America In the State of Florida. Ariana Bird Griffin (1812- 1857). It shows the portrait as an oil on canvas, 28 X 22-3/4, oval shape. Brown eyed lady sitting straight front in red upholstered chair. Dark hair, black dress with long sleeves, white lace collar and cuffs with wine colored stole around her shoulders. Right hand in prominent position as she was known for her beautiful hands. Background plain dark area. Condition good. Owners: Mrs. Winston H. Jervis (great great granddaughter) and Mrs. Donald M. Merritt (great great granddaughter). The following Livingston information was predominantly taken from the notes, books, etc. that were left to the Treasures of Madison. We have not attempted to validate the data, nor have we attempted to focus on all members of the family. Our only goal was to provide you some information shared with us and we hope you enjoy it. If you want to view the data or do some more research, come visit our library and we will get you started. 4 Volume 17, Issue 1 The Madison County, Florida Genealogical News Jan--Mar 2012 THE LIVINGSTON FAMILY ROBERT LIVINGSTON + ALIDA SCHUYLER GILBERT LIVINGSTON + CORNELIA BEEKMAN CORNELIUS LIVINGSTON + CAMILLA TALIFERRO THOMAS LIVINGSTON + MARY CHILDS THOMAS LIVINGSTON + MARGARET FRASER CAPT THOMAS JOHN LIVINGSTON + MARGARET WYCHE + ELLEN GROOVER MADISON CAMILLUS LIVINGSTON + ARIANNA BYRD GRIFFIN MARTHA CAMILLUS LIVINGSTON + FRANK SMITH ARIANNA PERKINS SMITH SUSAN LIVINGSTON + THEODORE HARTRIDGE LEAH ANN HARTRIDGE + WALTER BERNARD CLARKSON ANNIE CLARKSON + THOMAS FREDERICK DAVIS LEAH HARTRIDGE DAVIS +DONALD M.
