Voltaire, The Philosophy of History (1829), p. 107. ⸪ Introduction The fourth chapter shifts the focus from conversations between texts within Chinese language and culture to the transfer of these conversations to and between texts of European languages and cultures. More concretely, various interpretations by Jesuit missionaries of the historical texts on marvellous births mentioned by the Chinese classics will be discussed in order to investi- gate some characteristics of intercultural hermeneutics. It will be shown that this transfer was to a large extent shaped by the interpretations that were made by Chinese commentators before the transfer. Moreover it will become clear that the diversity of Chinese interpretations was echoed in a diversity of Jesuit interpretations. Regarding this diversity of Jesuit interpretations, -

In eighteenth-century France, conceptions of what differentiates humans from animals and machines became a sustained topic of interest in spaces that were public and private, recreational and intellectual. This dissertation argues that eighteenth-century harpsichords were porous sites where performers, composers, artisans, academics, and pedagogues negotiated the limits of these fragile boundaries. French harpsichords are at the center of my dissertation because they embodied an experimental collision of animal parts and other biomatter, complex machinery, and visual and musical performance. Taken together, I consider the ways that instruments had social import apart from sound production alone, expanding the definition of ii “instrument” beyond traditional organological studies of style in craftsmanship and musical aesthetics. -

The Jesuits and Chinese Science*
The Jesuits and Chinese Science* Chicheng Ma† June 2019 Abstract: Based on the historical context of the Jesuit mission to China from 1580, this paper examines the role of knowledge diffusion in scientific production. To facilitate their China mission, the Jesuits introduced European sciences to Chinese cultural elites—the Confucian literati. This stimulated the literati toward scientific research. In places where the Jesuits diffused European sciences, the number of Chinese scientific works increased significantly. But this effect disappeared after the Pope dismissed the Jesuit mission in 1773. The finding questions the conventional wisdom that the Confucian literati of imperial China disparaged science, and demonstrates the importance of opening to knowledge flow in scientific progress. The Lettres édifiantes et curieuses écrites des missions étrangères (Edifying and Curious Letters Written from Foreign Missions), a collection of these missionaries’ correspondences, revealed how the Jesuits described their impression of the city Beijing and the imperial court, their religious activities, and their scientific works. These descriptions played a role in shaping the Europeans’ view of China, contributing to the rise of “chinoiserie” in eighteenth-century Europe. French Jesuits dominated the West’s “Beijing experience” during the eighteenth century. EASTM 34 (2011): 86-162 Jesuit Medicine in the Kangxi Court (1662-1722): Imperial Networks and Patronage1 Beatriz Puente-Ballesteros [Beatriz Puente-Ballesteros, a Medical Doctor and Sinologist, obtained her PhD degree (European Degree) in the Department of History of Science at Complutense University of Madrid. Her thesis was honoured with the prize for the best doctorate of the Faculty of Medicine in the academic year 2008-2009 as well as with the prize “Hernández Morejón” for the best doctoral dissertation in the History of Medicine, granted by the Spanish Society for History of Medicine. Her research focuses on court medicine in late imperial China and medical exchange between China and Europe during the Kangxi period, especially the Jesuit physicians’ role at the court. From 2009 to 2012 she is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Sinology at the Faculty of Arts, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, with the financial support first of the University of Leuven and then of Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation. Email: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Knowledge concerning commercial activities of the French Company of the East Indies in Siam and Dai Viet in the 17th century is plagued by a large gap in research. This article, based on an examination of archives and various later works of research, seeks to fill part of that gap and redraw knowledge of the process of establishing and conducting commercial activities of the French in 17th century Siam. It reviews the ambiguous relations of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Les Missions Étrangères de Paris - MEP) and the French Company of the East Indies (La Compagnie FranÇaise des Indes Orientales - CIO), the ambitions of the French court and missionaries in Siam, and the vain attempts of the French to enhance their position in Siam. In doing so, the article provides a broad picture of French activities in the Indochinese peninsula giving a comparative perspective of their economic and religious penetration in Dai Viet in the second half of the 17th century. EALRGA Newsletter No. 61 (January 2013) France’s First Embassy to the Thais: Resources at the National Library of Australia [Abridged version of “Siam and the Sun King: France’s First Embassy to the Thais,” National Library of Australia Magazine, March 2013] Andrew Gosling, former Chief Librarian, Asian Collections, National Library of Australia France and Siam (Thailand) were allies in the late seventeenth century. The National Library has developed good holdings of original publications from this era as well as recent works in Thai, English and French. They cover links between the France of King Louis XIV (1638-1715) and Siam under King Narai the Great, who ruled from 1656 to 1688. Contemporary French and other foreign sources are particularly valuable as few early Siamese documents have survived the tropical climate, insects and war, particularly the Burmese sacking of Ayutthaya, the Siamese capital, in 1767. Louis XIV sent his first embassy to Siam in 1685-1686. An embassy then meant a visit by envoys to a foreign country, not a permanent presence there. Louis had several reasons for sending two ships filled with gifts, diplomats, missionaries and soldiers across the world. He and Narai wanted to counter the Dutch, the dominant European power in Southeast Asia. The French sought more trade with Ayutthaya, then a cosmopolitan commercial centre. Louis had also been advised, quite wrongly, that Narai was ready to become a Christian. France’s embassy failed to convert the king or improve trade, but has been called the best documented voyage of the seventeenth century. The Library holds no fewer than five published accounts by members of the mission. -

Attitude Towards Cross-Culture Exchange in the 1685 French Embassy to the Kingdom of Siam Benjamin Beese Middlebury College On 3 March 1685, six Jesuit priests launched from Brest, France aboard the sailing ship Oiseau with the goal of landing in the Kingdom of Siam seven months later.1 The Oiseau was loaded with astronomical charts, telescopes, books on natural history, quadrants, pendulums, other scientific instruments, and instructions from the Academy Royal for observations to make while abroad.2 The frigate Maligne accompanied the Oiseau, carrying an ambassador, the Chevalier de Chaumont; presents from King Louis XIV of France, and “the great many Bales of all sorts of Curiosities which the King of Siam had sent for, both from France and England.”3 This expedition was inspired by a Siamese embassy received by Louis XIV in 1684.4 Louis XIV hoped that King Narai of Siam (r. 1656-1688) “might turn Christian, if there were an Ambassador sent to him.”5 The Siamese ambassadors were given a tour of the Paris Observatory 1 For the purpose of this essay, I shall use the terms “Siam” and “Siamese” in appreciation of the facts that 1] the name “Thailand” was not officially declared until the 20th century, 2) the majority ethnic group known as “Thai” was only one of a myriad of ethnic groups which lived (and continue to live) in that country, and 3] although an exonym, “Siam” was the accepted term used by 17th century Europeans, including Guy Tachard. That said, I have generally replaced toponyms with their modern equivalent in order to aid clarity.
