In eighteenth-century France, conceptions of what differentiates humans from animals and machines became a sustained topic of interest in spaces that were public and private, recreational and intellectual. This dissertation argues that eighteenth-century harpsichords were porous sites where performers, composers, artisans, academics, and pedagogues negotiated the limits of these fragile boundaries. French harpsichords are at the center of my dissertation because they embodied an experimental collision of animal parts and other biomatter, complex machinery, and visual and musical performance. Taken together, I consider the ways that instruments had social import apart from sound production alone, expanding the definition of ii “instrument” beyond traditional organological studies of style in craftsmanship and musical aesthetics. -

While scholars recognize how the missionary blueprint overtook the military one, the Portuguese population, particularly in areas outside official Crown control, in fact had very little to do with Europe, nowhere more so than in its racial composition. One might thinkofthisentityasa“clan” or “tribe”. The internal social structure of this entity, and the reasons it was able to gain mass allegiance on the part of native populations, remains to be ascertained. This article examines how the “tribe” responded to two successive displacements as a result of the Dutch conquests of Melaka in 1641 and Makassar in the 1660s, considering why it moved to mainland South-East Asia and what this movement tells us about the group’sdynamics. This article begins at the intersection of two recent historiographical developments. On the one hand, Western historiography has tended to characterize the Portuguese in the Indian Ocean world as having fallen into thorough decline from the 1620s, and has also pondered endlessly over -

INTROdUCTION 1. In the footstep of Ecclesia in Asia Saint John Paul ii in the paragraph 9 of his post-synodal Exhortation Eccle - sia in Asia gave us a short synthesis of the history of the Church in the conti - nent under the title “the Church in Asia: past and present”. With this hand - book of Asian Church History we intend to offer students and readers a suit - able development of the essential data and intuitions we find in the post-syn - odal document. our purpose is principally academic. Hopefully, it should be a tool for teachers and students, but we do not exclude other possible readers, or consulters for a specific event or chapter of this rich and long history. in fact, as we know from history and experienced when we were there, the Christian presence in some parts of Africa and America is much more recent. instead, Asia is really the cradle of Christianity and the origins of many Asian communities are apostolic. We think especially of Middle East Churches and St. thomas’ Christians (india). Knowing that the majority of Asian students are non-native English speak - ers, we have tried to write our manual in a very simple language in order to facilitate its comprehension and use. Among our limitations we point to the lacking development of Protestant Missions that appear so abundant since the 19 th century, and deserve an ac - curate attention in the present moment of evangelization. instead we pre - sented the different oriental Churches with the ecumenical purpose of spreading their knowledge among Catholic public, and foster increased col - laboration. -

The Lettres édifiantes et curieuses écrites des missions étrangères (Edifying and Curious Letters Written from Foreign Missions), a collection of these missionaries’ correspondences, revealed how the Jesuits described their impression of the city Beijing and the imperial court, their religious activities, and their scientific works. These descriptions played a role in shaping the Europeans’ view of China, contributing to the rise of “chinoiserie” in eighteenth-century Europe. French Jesuits dominated the West’s “Beijing experience” during the eighteenth century. Positionality, Representation and Questions on Translation in Thailand
Positionality, Representation and Questions on Translation in Thailand Judy Wakabayashi Kent State University, USA [email protected] Abstract The growing interest in translation in Asia highlights ethical questions of positionality and representation, such as who has the right to speak about translation in Asian societies and how different positions (e.g., those of ‘insider’ or ‘outsider’) might affect the interpretation. From the in-between perspective of someone raised and mainly trained in Australia but whose career has been grounded in translation in Japan and, more recently, other parts of Asia, I seek a rationale and strategies for moving beyond the emic/etic dichotomy of self-representation vs representation by outsiders. Prompted by an invitation to speak in Thailand and my desire to learn more about translation in this region, I also raise a number of questions about translation in Siam/Thailand. Although not equipped to provide answers, I hope to stimulate ongoing inquiry by highlighting some issues that seem to warrant further research. Positionality and representation Research originating outside the West has long been on the periphery of the purportedly international discipline of Translation Studies. This is problematic on ethical and epistemological grounds, and it means the field is not benefiting from the insights possible if we turn our attention to translation in contexts different from those on which mainstream Translation Studies was founded. As an Australian, I have been greatly influenced by Western approaches to translation, but my research on Japanese translation has led to a broader interest in translation in other parts of Asia as well. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find much information about translation in Southeast Asia in languages that I can read, presumably due to a preference for writing in local languages and the relatively new status of Translation Studies in this region. -

Abstract: The background to this document is found in the history of China’s Shu Roads that passed through the Qinling and Ba Mountains for many years. The roads have linked the northern and southern parts of western China since the earliest records and probably before. In all that time, the common description of the Shu roads was that they were “hard”. In the Yuan, Ming and Qing periods when China was open and accessible, foreign travellers visited the Shu Roads and some left accounts of their travels. Among the early travellers were Catholic Missionaries who moved into the west of China to spread Christianity. This document first outlines the historical environment of the open periods and then identifies various events and Catholic Priests who seem to have travelled the Shu Roads or have left descriptions that are of interest today. The main focus of this document is on the recorded experiences of Missionaries mostly from the Jesuit, Franciscan and Vincentian orders of the Catholic Church of Rome who travelled to the Hanzhong Basin. The main items include: Marco Polo’s (circa 1290) account of travels in China which many Priests who arrived later had read to find out about China; Jesuit Fr. Étienne Faber’s travels to Hanzhong in 1635; Jesuit Fr. Martino Martini’s description of Plank Roads in his Atlas of China in 1655; Franciscan Fr. -

Email: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Knowledge concerning commercial activities of the French Company of the East Indies in Siam and Dai Viet in the 17th century is plagued by a large gap in research. This article, based on an examination of archives and various later works of research, seeks to fill part of that gap and redraw knowledge of the process of establishing and conducting commercial activities of the French in 17th century Siam. It reviews the ambiguous relations of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Les Missions Étrangères de Paris - MEP) and the French Company of the East Indies (La Compagnie FranÇaise des Indes Orientales - CIO), the ambitions of the French court and missionaries in Siam, and the vain attempts of the French to enhance their position in Siam. In doing so, the article provides a broad picture of French activities in the Indochinese peninsula giving a comparative perspective of their economic and religious penetration in Dai Viet in the second half of the 17th century.
