www.bookvica.com SPRING CATALOGUE 2018: Early Soviet Culture. A Selection of Books 1 F O R E W O R D Dear friends and collegues, Bookvica team is happy to present to you the spring catalogue of 2018! Our focus is once again on the life of the USSR in 1920s-1930s when new ideas have found its embodiment in the life of the Soviet man. Most of the books we have gathered for this catalogue are not one the classic checklist of early Soviet books. No works by Mayakovsky or Lissitzky are present and some of them are practically unknown and barely recorded. However this collection is not accidental but the one with a purpose. With some exceptions we tried to look into the lesser researched sides of the life of new Soviet man and the propaganda that was creating her/him. What toys were they playing growing up and what notebooks used to write their lessons in? What shoes did they wear and what parks they attended back in the days? What did they do in a free time? How the factory libraries looked like and what could be written in the factory newspapers? The answers could be found in the books featured in our catalogue this time. As usual we tried to include books that would have the harmonious balance of rarity, interesting content and the design. That’s why you should expect to find the constructivist wrapper on the catalogue of the library equipment or photomontage cover of the second grade notebook. Apart from the experimental sections we did include our standard selection on architecture, art theory (this time focusing on color theory) and science books as well as handmade children’s books on their life in pioneer summer camps. -

On the Topics and Style of Soviet Animated Films
BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2016 / VOLUME 4 / ARTICLE Article On the Topics and Style of Soviet Animated Films ÜLO PIKKOV, Estonian Academy of Arts; email: [email protected] 16 DOI: 10.1515/bsmr-2017-0002 BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2016 / VOLUME 4 / ARTICLE ABSTRACT This article provides a survey of Soviet animation and analyses the thematic and stylistic course of its develop- ment. Soviet animated film emerged and materialised in synch with the fluctuations of the region’s political climate and was directly shaped by it. A number of trends and currents of Soviet animation also pertain to other Eastern European countries. After all, Eastern Europe constituted an integrated cultural space that functioned as a single market for the films produced across it by filmmakers who interacted in a professional regional network of film education, events, festivals, publications etc. Initially experimental, post-revolutionary Russian ani- mation soon fell under the sway of the Socialist Realist discourse, along with the rest of Soviet art, and quickly crystallised as a didactic genre for children. Disney’s para- digm became its major source of inspiration both in terms of visual style and thematic scope, despite the fact that Soviet Union was regarded as the ideological opposite of the Western way of life and mindset. The Soviet animation industry was spread across different studios and republics that adopted slightly varied production practices and tolerated different degrees of artistic freedom. Studios in the smaller republics, such as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in particular, stood out for making films that were more ideologically complicated than those produced in Moscow. -

ZESZYT 4 (120) Marina Balina Illinois Wesleyan University, USA SOVIET MAGIC: THE SUBVERSIVE POWER OF THE FAIRY TALE The position of children’s literature was always paradoxical in the Soviet Union. (Kukulin and Maiofi s, 214) Although children’s literature was a distinct part of the Soviet propaganda system, it was at the same time one of the most liberal domains of creative literary expression. The Russian critic Marietta Chudakova explains this special status of children’s literature as a direct result of the limitation of the socialist realist method. Since its themes and characters suffered from ideological and stylistic ‘infantilism,’ writers viewed children’s literature as a more natural sphere for dealing with this phenomenon. According to Chudakova, children’s literature was able to offer Soviet writers an alternative way of creative expression that literature for adult readers denied them. (248) In children’s literature, writers were able to avoid ideological subjects, as did, for example, Vitalii Bianki (1894- 1959), who became a respected writer within the Soviet literary establishment, despite his non-ideological themes. Generations of Soviet children grew up with his Forest Gazette (Лесная газета) and numerous stories about nature. However, such a popular genre of children’s literature as the fairy tale did not escape the ideological pressures, and became, in both its forms — the folkloristic and the literary — the subject of intense political battles. Each letter is housed into a custom-made folder, and both folders laid into a brown full morocco clamshell box bound in a Russian style of the period, richly decorated with gilt tooled ornaments on the boards and the spine; with two gilt lettered light-brown morocco title labels on the spine. -

AATSEEL 2020 Presentation Abstracts FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2020 1-1 Stream 1A: Tolstoy as Reader (I): Tolstoy Reading Literature, Myth and Religion Brian Kim, University of Pennsylvania Recommending Reading: Great Books According to Tolstoy In 1890, in response to Sir John Lubbock’s recently published list of one hundred books deemed “best worth reading,” Leo Tolstoy was approached by the publisher M. M. Lederle, who was interested in printing Tolstoy’s own recommendations in this regard. Tolstoy’s sin- gle and abortive attempt at compiling such a list in response contained fewer than 50 titles, organized according to the period of one’s life when they ought to be read and the degree of impression each had made on him personally. Ranging from religious texts and classical epics to contemporary philosophy and Russian literature, Tolstoy’s unpublished list is unsurprisingly characterized by an extraordinary breadth and a focus on writings conducive to the development of moral and spiritual education that was his main preoccupation in the latter period of his life. Though it did not become part of his public recommendations for reading (as, e.g., the aphorisms he later gathered in Krug chteniia), Tolstoy’s list was reflec- tive of a contemporaneous response to the rapid growth of literacy in late nineteenth-century Russia that was concerned with directing the reading consumption of a newly literate public toward texts of greater value than the light fiction so commonly found among booksellers’ wares. This paper examines Tolstoy’s recommendations in light of his experiences as a reader, educator, and public figure, and places his list in dialogue with conversations about literacy education in Russia at the end of the nineteenth century. -

Chair: Paul Austin opened and chaired the meeting. The Chair invited those present to honour the memory of those members who had passed away during the preceding year. The members stood for a moment of silence to honour Danylo Struk and Clara Holosi. 2. Agenda: Reid moved (m) and Zekulin seconded (s) that the agenda be approved as presented. Carried. 3. Minutes: Friesen (m) and Reid (s) that the minutes of the 1999 AGM, as published in the CAS Newsletter, Fall 1999, be approved. Carried. 4. Reports: President Allan Reid’s oral report began with a statement that the Canadian Association of Slavists was in relatively good financial health, and that the Canadian Slavonic Papers was both in good shape and in good hands. He congratulated Edward Mozejko and Gust Olson for the latter. Reid then reported that, in an attempt to facilitate better communications within CAS overall, two listserves would soon be created: one for the membership as a whole, and one for the Executive. The latter will be particularly useful for conducting CAS’s day-to-day business. In addition, an Executive decision has been made to combine the CAS and Canadian Slavonic Papers websites. The President congratulated Natalia Pylypiuk, Programme Chair for CAS 2000, for a job well done, noting the programme’s diversity in both geographical and interdisciplinary terms.
