The First One Who Divided Their Countries and Displaced Them Suleiman the Magnificent Inaugurated the Kurdish “Bloodbath” History is merciless. Leaders and headmen shall be aware that one mistake may lead a nation to damage. Sometimes, it may rather eliminate it. This is what happened to Kurds and their relationship with the Ottoman Empire. It started with mutual concern between the two parties. It was followed by an alliance that quickly ended and turned into hostility that caused bloody massacres from which Kurds suffered until today. The story details date back to (1514 AD) when Idris Bitlisi, the leader of Kurds at that time, made a political deal with Selim I (1520 -1512). The deal was that Kurds should help Selim to gain victory over the Safavid state; in return, Ottoman Sultan shall recognize the autonomy of Kurds and give them freedom to form their own army and in addition; not to interfere in their internal affairs. Indeed, the deal was made and Selim I gained victory over Safavids in Chaldiran (1514 AD). The deal between Kurds and Turkish was named Chaldiran. The situation did not last long; as soon as Selim I died (1520 AD), everything changed. Although alliances made between countries do not depend on the life or death of people, this was not applicable to Turkish sultans as whenever one of them superseded, he breached the covenant of his predecessor and so on. Thus, they were known as the Empire of breaching covenants. This was the first mistake of Kurds, even if they realized it too late.

The Türk in Aşıkpaşazâde: A Private Individual’s Ottoman History Murat Cem Mengüç* Aşıkpazâde’deki Türk: Bir Özel Şahsın Osmanlı Tarihi Öz 15. yüzyılda Osmanlı aydınları tarih kitaplarını sivil güçlerini uyguladıkları bir platform olarak kullandılar. • Chapter 10. Negotiating Identity and Coping with Urban Space Among Young Kurdish Migrants in Istanbul
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Jagiellonian Univeristy Repository Chapter 10. Negotiating identity and coping with urban space among young Kurdish migrants in Istanbul Karol P. Kaczorowski Many existing studies on Kurdish migration concentrate on displacement and expulsion experienced by Kurds in various parts of Kurdistan and especially between 1970 and 1999 in Turkey. However it can be observed that since the beginning of the twenty-first century migration have also played a substantial role in the mobility of Kurds, owing to stabilization in Southern Kurdistan (i.e. Autonomous Kurdistan Region in Iraq) and improvement of minority rights in Turkey due to the accession process with the EU, the economic and educational needs became more influential in the decisions of Kurdish migrants in twenty-first century. To my best knowledge, it appears that there is a shortage of studies examining economic migration and new spatial movements of the Kurds in the twenty-first century Turkey 1. This chapter presents partial results of an ongoing research examining social construction of ethnic identity of young Kurdish migrants in Istanbul. First, the theoretical context is explained with emphasis on the importance of Istanbul for Kurdish culture and conceptualization of identity and migration. Environment of human insecurity (EOHI) is introduced as the model for understanding the studied case of migration. Preliminary results of in-depth interviews with migrants are presented in the second section. Respondents’ understanding of key notions (migration, homeland and Kurdish culture), their attitudes towards Istanbul, the perceived qualities and flaws of conditions that the city provides, and the potential relevance of the metropolis to Kurdish culture are presented.

It combines conceptual and theoretical insights from the field of IR and studies on nationalism, and focuses on national identity, sub-state groups and international norms.

Martin van Bruinessen, “Kurdistan in the 16th and 17th centuries, as reflected in Evliya Çelebi's Seyahatname”, published in The Journal of Kurdish Studies 3 (2000), 1-11. Kurdistan in the 16th and 17th centuries, as reflected in Evliya Çelebi's Seyahatname Martin van Bruinessen Some sixty years after Sharaf Khan Bidlisi completed his Sharafname, the celebrated Turkish traveller Evliya Çelebi travelled extensively in Kurdistan. The ten thick volumes of his Book of Travels (Seyahatname) constitute a unique work almost unparalleled in the travel literature. The account of his travels in Kurdistan is unfortunately not yet completely available in print. At the time when the Ottoman printed edition of these volumes appeared, the archetype (the manuscript from which all later manuscripts appear to be copies, and which either was written in Evliya's own hand or dictated to a scribe) was not available to the editors, Necib Asim Bey and the great historian Ahmed Cevdet. Sultan Abdulhamid II's censors (or the editor's fear of the censors) moreover caused some alterations in the text as it was published. Only parts of Evliya's memoirs on Kurdistan have so far been published in a more satisfactory edition.1 One important part has in fact never been published at all and is awaiting a critical edition. Evliya's Seyahatname does not really fit any established genre, and it never became popular until this century. Evliya's contemporaries found his work badly organised and were probably put off by his interests in things that did not conform to civilised taste. It is precisely Evliya's "bad taste" that made him the most interesting of the Ottoman authors to late-20th century readers.

  • Studying the Impact of Religio-Political Confrontations of Islamic Empires in Kurdistan (From the Beginning Until the End of the Islamic Caliphate)
Indonesian Journal of Islamic History and Culture Vol. 2, No. 1 (2021). 1-49 P-ISSN: 2722-8940; E-ISSN: 2722-8934 STUDYING THE IMPACT OF RELIGIO-POLITICAL CONFRONTATIONS OF ISLAMIC EMPIRES IN KURDISTAN (FROM THE BEGINNING UNTIL THE END OF THE ISLAMIC CALIPHATE) Sabah Mofidi Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) Email: [email protected] Abstract This article seeks to address the problem of historiography and perspective in Middle East studies concerning dominated ethno-nations, especially the Kurds, while examining the religio-political confrontations between the Islamic empires and their significant socio-political consequences in Kurdistan through a historical study (primarily) based on secondary sources. With the dominance of the early Islamic Caliphate from the 7th century, the political powers of the Kurds’ ancestors were removed and the non-Muslim population severely declined. From the middle of the Abbasid Caliphate period (750-1258) Kurdish governments grew again. After the Abbasids, various Islamic sects gained power and Kurdistan gradually becoming the battlefield of various political powers. With the emergence of two empires, the Sunni Ottoman and Shiite Safavid (and its successors) in the 16th century, the internal conflicts in the Islamic world culminated and lasted until the early 20th century. Between the 7th and the early 20th century religio-political confrontations converging in Kurdistan have severely affected the land’s socio-political situation. This article examines how the Islamic empires used religion

Martin van Bruinessen Martin van Bruinessen, "The Kurds and Islam". Working Paper no. 13, Islamic Area Studies Project, Tokyo, Japan, 1999. [this is a slightly revised version of the article in Islam des Kurdes (Les Annales de l'Autre Islam, No.5). Paris: INALCO, 1998, pp. 13- 35] The Kurds and Islam Martin van Bruinessen After Turkish, Arabic and Persian, Kurdish is the fourth language of the Middle East in number of speakers.[1] Presently the Kurds number, by conservative estimate, 20 to 25 million, which makes them the largest stateless people of the Middle East. Numerous Kurds have played important roles in the history of Islam but this has often remained unnoticed because they did not explicitly identify themselves by their ethnic origins; when they expressed themselves in writing they usually did so in one (or more) of the three neighbour languages. Kurdistan, the mountainous region where most of the Kurds lived, has long been a buffer zone between the Turkish-, Arabic- and Persian-speaking regions of the Muslim world. Politically, Kurdistan constituted a periphery to each of these cultural- political regions, but it has also had the important cultural role of mediation between them. Learned Kurds have frequently acted as a bridge between different intellectual traditions in the Muslim world, and Kurdish `ulama have made major contributions to Islamic scholarship and Muslim literature in Arabic and Turkish as well as Persian. Islam has, conversely, deeply affected Kurdish society; even ostensibly non-religious aspects of social and political life are moulded by it. As in other tribal societies, networks of madrasas and sufi orders have functioned as mechanisms of social integration, overcoming segmentary division.

Introduction Mu‘in al-Din Ashraf Sharifi Shirazi (d. 1587), better known as Mirza Makh- dum, enjoyed a rather short bureaucratic career in Safavid Iran in the 1570s. The few accomplishments of his most successful years he owed to Shah Tahmasp’s (r. 1524–76) son and successor Isma‘il II (r. 1576–77), under whom Mirza Makh- dum was elevated from royal tutor to court astrologer to sadr, or head of religious affairs and endowments. These were positions that gave him a free hand in plan- ning and executing, with approval and backing from the Safavid ruler, a series of pro-Sunni policies. It goes on to explore the development of Ar- menian-Kurdish relations with its entire vicissitudes. It comprehensively illustrates manifestations of the Armenian and the Kurdish Questions at international diplomatic forums and the political interactions of the two neighboring nations in the last few decades. The Armenian Question is touched upon here only as much as it is closely linked with the Kurdish Question. • Empire and Power in the Reign of Süleyman
more information - www.cambridge.org/9781107034426 Empire and Power in the Reign of Suleyman¨ Kaya S¸ahin’s book offers a revisionist reading of Ottoman history dur- ing the reign of Suleyman¨ the Magnificent (1520–66). By examining the life and works of a bureaucrat, Celalzade Mustafa, S¸ahin moves beyond traditional, teleological approaches and argues that the empire was built as part of the Eurasian momentum of empire building and demonstrates the imperial vision of sixteenth-century Ottomans. This unique study shows that, in contrast with many Eurocentric views, the Ottomans were active players in European politics, with an impe- rial culture in direct competition with that of the Habsburgs and the Safavids. Indeed, this book explains Ottoman empire building with ref- erence to the larger Eurasian context, from Tudor England to Mughal India, contextualizing such issues as state formation, imperial policy, and empire building in the period more generally. S¸ahin’s work also devotes significant attention to the often-ignored religious dimension of the Ottoman–Safavid struggle, showing how the rivalry redefined Sunni and Shiite Islam, laying the foundations for today’s religious tensions. Kaya S¸ahin is Assistant Professor of History at Indiana University, Bloomington. His research and writing have been supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Newberry Library, and the Social Science Research Council. Cambridge Studies in Islamic Civilization Editorial Board David O.
