Stylistic Evolution of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: the Cultural Intersection of New Orleans and West Africa
STYLISTIC EVOLUTION OF JAZZ DRUMMER ED BLACKWELL: THE CULTURAL INTERSECTION OF NEW ORLEANS AND WEST AFRICA David J. Schmalenberger Research Project submitted to the College of Creative Arts at West Virginia University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion/World Music Philip Faini, Chair Russell Dean, Ph.D. David Taddie, Ph.D. Christopher Wilkinson, Ph.D. Paschal Younge, Ed.D. Division of Music Morgantown, West Virginia 2000 Keywords: Jazz, Drumset, Blackwell, New Orleans Copyright 2000 David J. Schmalenberger ABSTRACT Stylistic Evolution of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: The Cultural Intersection of New Orleans and West Africa David J. Schmalenberger The two primary functions of a jazz drummer are to maintain a consistent pulse and to support the soloists within the musical group. Throughout the twentieth century, jazz drummers have found creative ways to fulfill or challenge these roles. In the case of Bebop, for example, pioneers Kenny Clarke and Max Roach forged a new drumming style in the 1940’s that was markedly more independent technically, as well as more lyrical in both time-keeping and soloing. The stylistic innovations of Clarke and Roach also helped foster a new attitude: the acceptance of drummers as thoughtful, sensitive musical artists. These developments paved the way for the next generation of jazz drummers, one that would further challenge conventional musical roles in the post-Hard Bop era. One of Max Roach’s most faithful disciples was the New Orleans-born drummer Edward Joseph “Boogie” Blackwell (1929-1992). Ed Blackwell’s playing style at the beginning of his career in the late 1940’s was predominantly influenced by Bebop and the drumming vocabulary of Max Roach. -

Spiritualität in Jazz Und Improvisierter Mu Sik
LP/CD MINGUS MINGUS: Take Better Get Hit In Your Soul Charles Mingus: Better Get Hit In Yo'Soul CHARLES MINGUS: MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS – Impulse IMP 12702 Die Big Band des Bassisten und Komponisten Charles Mingus mit «Better Get Hit In Your Soul» aus dem Jahre 1963. -

This thesis presents an original composition entitled The Mosley Street Suite, demonstrating some of the trends of third stream music and consisting four movements entitled: "Song Within The Story”, “Paper Air Plane”, “Chalet Music” and “Mbira Kids.” A brief overview of third stream music from its inception in 1957 to the present day is included, as well as a discussion of some of the musical techniques and styles that embody third stream, citing examples from a variety of composers, arrangers and performers. A final section of this thesis contains a detailed description of the methodology and score of The Mosley Street Suite. !ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Professors Al Henderson and Dr. Mark Chambers for their guidance and assistance. It focuses on four of the most representative political youth groups present in the city of St. Petersburg – the Young Guard, the National Bolsheviks, the Movement Against Illegal Immigration (DPNI), and Oborona [Defence] – and describes their conceptualisation of post-Soviet Russianness, as captured through an analysis of their lyrics. The main contribution of this empirical study is the detection of convergences and divergences with regard to the national identity issue characterising youth organisations that position themselves diff erently in the Russian political spectrum. Keywords: Russian civil society, Russian music, post-Soviet Russian national identity, cultural trauma. -
Sergei Borisov. Studio 50А 19 November – 6 December
Sergei Borisov. Studio 50А 19 November – 6 December “Borisov’s works need no commentary. They could be expanded to other dimensions with poetry, music and paintings”. Viktor Erofeev. November 18, RuArts Gallery of contemporary art with the support of Harper’s Bazaar Art, Mondoro and Prime concierge service will present Sergei Borisov’s personal exhibition, dedicated to the presentation of his album Studio 50A. Borisov is one of the most famous and honored Russian photographers. Project Studio 50A gathers photographs that show the unique place of Sergei Borisov on the Russian art scene. The exhibition includes both classic and new works. In 1979 Sergei Borisov settled at Znamenka, since 1983 known as Studio 50A. There he worked on an illustration assignment for “Le Monde” article on Soviet rock music that recently became a subject in the West. As the piece’s central figure Borisov suggested ‘the tsar of Russian rock’ Boris Grebenshchikov and his band Aquarium with their brand new album “Radio Africa”. That’s how the journey to the world of Leningrad underground music started. As new music and art forms gained momentum, Studio 50 A quickly became a communication centre for artists between Moscow and Leningrad, as well as a stepping stone for modern culture and art movement. Borisov showed another side of Soviet life with his photo stories starring underground artists. The first Soviet rock diva Zhanna Aguzarova, World Champions art group, Roman Viktyuk, Viktor Tsoi, Vladislav Monroe, Georgy Guryanov and Timur Novikov – all were natural and spontaneous during photoshoots and performance shows, climbing city monuments and undressing in the studio as well as on the street. -
