I am happy to greet participants and guests of the 9th Imperial Gardens of Russia International Festival! For years this extensive exhibition project has been unveiling the diversity of landscape architecture to citizens of St Petersburg and its guests. Owing to cooperation with large companies, consulates and cultural institutions from foreign countries, the international status of the Festival & Competition is growing stronger. This year it bears the name “The Flowers of Life” and dedicated to children. For the next ten days the Mikhailovsky Garden will turn into a bloomy island. Landscape designers from all over the world will present their advances in the garden and park art. The competent jury and public will have an opportunity to appreciate unconventional works of designers. The cultural and educational programme with participation of St Petersburg charity foundations will become a significant event of the Festival. Special landscape projects and playgrounds for children with disabilities will be implemented on the Festival’s venue. I am sure that once again the Imperial Gardens of Russia will become a bright event in the life of St Petersburg, promote strengthening of international cultural ties of our city. I wish participants of the Festival success in their creative endeavors, inspiration, rewarding work, and implementation of the brightest and boldest ideas!

Governor of Saint Peterburg Georgy Poltavchenko Dear friends!

This is the ninth time the Russian Museum has held the Imperial Gardens of Russia International Festival. In previous years the Mikhailovsky Garden saw the bloomy gardens of France, Italy, Great Britain, Russia, and Oriental countries. This year we decided to take our mind off geography and chose the theme, which is universal and close to everyone, and offers a bundle of various interpretations, – The Flowers of Life. This Festival is about flowers, children, children’s dreams, it is for both children and adults. The Garden of Childhood is a definite concept wakening some personal reminiscences, and, at the same time, it is an abstract world of children’s dreams and fantasy. Traditionally, the center of the Festival is the exhibition-competition of garden and park art. This year fifty compositions are presented to the competition. The international jury consisting of landscape experts from Russia, Great Britain, and Spain will decide winners in several categories. The cultural and educational programme of this Festival has a pronounced social orientation: each of ten days will be held under the aegis of one of known charitable foundations (Advite, Anton’s Right Here, Alesha, Apelsin, Teply Dom, It’s Time to Help, Dobry Gorod Petersburg, In Search of Harmony). This will let visitors get an idea of high-minded and really necessary activity of these establishments of providing assistance to people who desperately need such assistance. Every day the visitors of the Festival will have a chance to see performances of musical bands and dancing groups, workshops, lectures, video shows. Over the years of existence the Festival has gained a reputation of a venue for sharing experience and strengthening of international cooperation. This year, the Danish Cultural Institute in Saint Petersburg, l’Institut Français, the Consulate General of Great Britain, the Consulate General of Finland are taking part in the Festival, as well as the Consulate General of Spain. In 2015 the Russian Museum opened its first foreign branch in Spanish city Málaga, and we are happy to continue our co-operation with Spanish colleagues in the Mikhailovsky Garden in St Petersburg. We express our warm appreciation to numerous partners of the Festival. Without their support, implementation of such large-scale project would have been much more challenging. Childhood is a universal theme, and we hope that it will attract citizens of St Petersburg and guests of the city to the Mikhailovsky Garden. We have exerted every effort to make the Festival interesting for everyone and, certainly, our young visitors are especially welcome.

Director of the Russian Museum Vladimir Gusev Dear friends!

There is hardly anyone who would dispute the fact that St Petersburg has always been and is the capital of Russian landscape architecture. Yet, every June the constellation of landscape masterpieces of the North capital witnesses another star – the Imperial gardens of Russia Festival, organized by the Russian Museum in its beautiful Mikhailovsky Garden – to light up for a short time. The great city acquires another, though ephemeral, landmark attracting dozens of thousands of visitors. Exhibition gardens are a special genre of landscape architecture. On the one hand they do not seem real, but on the other hand they are absolutely real and evoke your real emotions and sensations. Rather than anything else, exhibition gardens can inspire the unlimited flight of designer’s thought. If a large garden is a novel, the exhibition garden is a verse, which allows and even requires allusions, metaphors, hyperboles, and understatements, appeals to finish the author’s idea and enjoy a subtle rhyme. I have been taking a great delight watching the Imperial Gardens of Russia for several years as a viewer and as a participant and see how the quality bar of the garden compositions presented for competition is rising higher and higher year by year. This year I am enjoying the privilege to take the lead of the professional jury, each member of which is a high skilled expert in the area, and I may presume to assure you that our assessment will be unbiased and fair. The Festival of 2016 is about children. Childhood impressions are the most important in life, and children are creatures with exceptional abilities. In just several years they are able to learn a language or even two, they learn how to write, count, draw, sing, dance, swim, ride a bike and simultaneously they manage to learn what is good and what is not. And they start learning all these things from the ground. And they learn all these things with no much effort! Each child is a prodigy. Children learn the world around them with ease, while adults are not capable of that. That is why the task of an adult is to create conditions and space for merry and educational play, for an exciting, challenging and always changing play which make every child to show up, rather than make the life of a child simple. I hope that participants of the landscape competition will show their best, and visitors, both children and adults, will have a great time and takes thousands of beautiful photos and, certainly, selfie as it is already hard to imagine our life without them!

Head of the International Jury of the exhibition-contest «Children: The Flowers of Life» Artem Parshin Dear friends!

Gardening is one of the most noble activities to which mankind may devote their time and efforts. From the modest orchard that an old gentleman grows with passion and care in his backyard to the imperial gardens raised through centuries by the greatest landscapers, the making of a garden involves a high degree of humanistic culture, a keen knowledge of nature and a vision that goes beyond a lifetime. It calls for the best of virtues and enhances the highest dimensions of human life: creating a garden requires as much love of beauty, harmony and joy as the best of Art needs, but also a connection with the material world that Art often lacks. As a museum manager I feel many times privileged today. It is of course a privilege to work in close association with such an extraordinary institution as the Russian State Museum. But it’s also a privilege, and much less frequent in the world of Art, finding that this partner of us, unlike any other Museum in the world, holds in its custody not just a marvellous collection of art works but also the most extraordinary ensemble of historic gardens in Russia. For a team like ours, used to work in a controlled atmosphere on inert artworks, it’s a quite interesting change and a huge pleasure to move outdoors and get to know how our colleagues work in the open air with living works of art. And I also feel privileged, of course, to represent my country, Spain, as an honour guest of the Festival. We would like to bring with us in this edition some of our Mediterranean air, just like the Russian Museum has brought to our city some of the best of Russian culture. In this spirit of cultural exchange I raise my salute to all of participants, guests and visitors, hoping that they find in this friendly and artistic competition the inspiration to keep working, each in our own fields, to make this world a peaceful and happy place for the children to whom this edition is dedicated.

José María Luna Aguilar Director. Collection of the Russian Museum St Petersburg/Málaga The concept of the festival The IX Imperial Gardens of Russia International Festival CHILDREN: THE FLOWERS OF LIFE Garden art & design exhibition-contest

«Childhood, that enormous territory from which everyone comes! Where did I come from? I come from my childhood, as though it were a country…» Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Childhood is a special world, a unique culture within a culture, a region full of riddles and incomprehensible events. It is a world with its own rules of behavior, a world of fantasy and games. Children are endowed with emotional freedom and creative potential that has not yet been constrained by the inertia of tradition and the social routine of everyday life. Children are the objects of socialization, but they are less burdened than adults by its norms occupying a space on the border between nature and culture. «Children are like flowers. You need to bend down to their level to understand them» Friedrich Fröbel The Education of Man (1826)

Friedrich Fröbel (1782–1852) was a German pedagogue and a theorist on subject of early childhood education; creator of the concept of “kindergarten.” One of the decisive stages in the formation of personality is the interaction of a child with his surrounding environment, namely with the natural environment, where he can be free and in harmony with nature. One of the trends in contemporary landscape design that is currently at the forefront is the creation of varied spaces for children’s play, themed parks, and gardens that include essential elements of nature. The fundamental idea for the Imperial Gardens of Russia Festival in 2016 is the creation in Mikhailovsky Garden of a harmonious space for recreation for adults and children, with an interesting and full-bodied program. The most important event will be the FLOWERS OF LIFE landscape design competition. Competition participants are invited to create a complete fantasy and bold visions of spaces for play, landscape compositions, and objets d’art: • for children • with children, nostalgically remembering their own childhoods. CLAUDE PONTI

Claude Ponti (born in 1948) – a French writer, artist, caricaturist, illustrator. Award holder of Prix Sorcières Spécial 2006. Being the author of novels for adults, Claude Ponti made his first album for children at the age of 41 and dedicated it to his daughter Adele. At the moment more than thirty of such albums have been published. All albums are full of metamorphoses similar to the ones from books of Lewis Carroll and peculiar illustrations accompanied by the texts which are also peculiar. Claude Ponti believes that imagination is like a bike: if you learn to ride a bike at an early age, you will never lose this skill. Albums by Claude Pointi are such a success that in 2013 some topiary trees (fancy green sculptures) in the form of characters from his books appeared in the Botanical Garden of Nantes (France). Project “CLASSROOM BOARD”

There is hardly anyone who has never written a word or sentence, an equation or formula on the board in the classroom. There is hardly anyone who was brave every time when being asked to the board to solve a problem or retell the chapter from the home assignment. A classroom board is the screen through which we entered the world of knowledge and strict grading system, but we also used to draw some funny faces and write some rough words on it. So it is not just a board in the classroom but it can also be called a class board as everyone in the class can write something funny, peculiar and amusing on it. Our board is precisely this, and to get rid of any doubts, we decorate it with flowers and balloons. Here we do not have any teachers to put marks into the record book or call parents to school. Our board is your opportunity of creative self-expression. Besides, our classroom board is an interactive object allowing its multi- purpose use. It can be used as a decoration of the performance venue; the play and creative zone for visitors to be used during workshops, lectures, and meetings with interesting people, as well as the announcement board. It can be also effectively used to place company logos in a non- intrusive manner.

“TRANSPARENCY” Project

The concept of works for the plain air is the unity of geometric shapes from glass and their inner content with the diversity of decorative methods of the wildlife. The magnificent world of wildlife and glass is the essence of our works. They are our broodings on the diversity of the world, its beauty and fragility of glass. The attraction to transparent glass of simple shapes (cylinder, sphere) is connected to the aspiration to get into the swing of structural- tentonic composition of the space. In solution of glass compositions in the landscape the light takes a special meaning: it is an essential condition for display of natural and art properties of glass works of art. Creating glass sculptures for gardens and parks, we aim at awakening imagination, dreams and a desire to create in our visitors (small and big ones). Project “DREAM ABOUT DRAGON”

Project authors – Gnilovskaya Anastasia and Pevnitskaya Anna

There are plenty of fairytales …and the tales about Dragons are the brightest of them. Nations living in different places – from Northern Europe to China – independently created legends about these magic creatures. Doesn’t it mean that dragons existed in reality? And if this is true, where are they now? You just need to take a closer look, and it turns out that they are fast beside! The matter is that having grown up, people often stop believing in fairytales and do not notice them. And only children are able to see this miraculous world. We suggest that big and little visitors of the Festival should stop for a minute and be translated to the world of beautiful creatures living in harmony with nature. NON COMPETITION PROGRAMM

Project “SPILLIKINS”

Everyone has heard a popular saying “play at spillikins”, which means to do nothing or be busy with trifles. But in actual fact the game of spillikins is an exciting activity requiring dexterity and special skills. Starting from the 19th century Russian turned spillikins were a family and even public entertainment. Spillikins were made of different fine wood, gem jade, amber, and even ivory. The rules of this exciting game are simple: spillikins are released on the table top randomly and players in turn remove sticks from a pile with a special rod. The player to disturb the neighboring stick gives the rod to the next player. The game lasts until the players remove all sticks. The winner is the player with the highest number of sticks picked up. Our spillikins are ceramic, made by the 1st year students on the pottery wheel. We invite our visitors to take part in this exciting game. The one who manages to fish out a spillikin with a special hook will receive a funny designed pot as a gift. (The game of spillikins is available on the Festival’s opening day and at weekends). This is the third time our children have taken part in the Imperial Gardens of Russia Festival in the Mikhailovsky Garden of the Russian Museum. The care home has a large green area with playgrounds, grounds for sports activities, flowerbeds, a small vegetable garden, and an apple garden. The children take care of their vegetable patches, and certainly they cannot do without buckets and watering pots, as they are the main assistants for work in the garden. With their help the garden is well-groomed, and flowers bloom. The composition is created using our assistants – garden tools, which were brightly painted by our children and have turned into works of art. Such buckets and watering pots may decorate any garden, and if added with some flowers put into them, such buckets and watering pots will make up beautiful garden compositions. Join us, use your creativity at your dacha, decorate patios, entry zones, and do not be afraid to express your imagination. This is the first time the young people–residents of Care Facility No. 7 have taken part in the Imperial Gardens of Russia Festival. The project they are implementing is a traditional flowerbed of complicated shape inspired by works of famous Russian landscape architect K. P. Epanchin published in 1878. Pearl grey carved leaves of cineraria emphasize pink petals of blooming begonia; clean lines of the flowerbed ornament create the impression of continuity and harmony. The center of the composition is agave, being a vertical dominant, which was typical of formal parks of the 19th century. Work on the flowerbed requires meticulosity, diligence and professional skills. The team of gardeners took up this challenging task with great enthusiasm, as they are happy to bring you, dear visitors of the Festival, the joy from the beauty observed. And should you decide to create a similar flowerbed in your garden, our gardeners will be happy to know that they have inspired you for creativity in the garden.

Project “CHILDREN’S SAFARI”

In childhood many of us were taken to the zoo by parents. Do you remember the excitement with which we were looking forward to this event? Unfortunately, not all zoos in Russia have appropriate infrastructure or clever and comfortable upkeep of animals. The child’s keen mind is seeking extensive images to develop, including the images of animals. So we have decided to show the children safari. Yet, there is no need to take them to Africa. It is much more practical to make an interactive playground and decorate it as a safari park. It will not only provide children with an idea about the sizes of animals and their living conditions, but also develop their curiosity and creativity. As in our landscape composition we have only managed to designate the lakes and plains conventionally, children during their games will have to think about details, enliven animals and invest them with some specific functions. Instead of standard playgrounds enclosed by fences and predominantly filled with metal or plastic stationary facilities, we are creating the natural space for child’s play. When added with play zones filled with sand, rocks and so called free moveable elements, we will have an integral playground promoting development of creative thinking, language competence and skills of collaborative work. Project «ZOOGARDEN»

Idea author – Mikina Olga Architects – Mikina Olga, Smirnova Elena

«You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed» Antoine de Saint-Exupery

We welcome you to the children’s fantasy world which is invented by kids and for kids. This mini zoo is created based on children’s drawings. Creation and careful attitude to the surrounding world is essential for the harmonious development of the child. So, the main idea of our composition is the idea of community of children, adults and nature which is brought through creativity and contact with animals. The exhibition place is set on large wooden terrace which is made in the shape of a lamb. Each house for animals (donkey, rabbits, goats) is designed by architects who are in collaboration with the winners of our drawing contest. Family zoo-space gives atmosphere of joy, spontaneity and gives an opportunity to every guest, even an adult feel himself like a child. SHOW-GARDENS SHOW-GARDENS

Project “CREATIVITY”

Artists – Andrean Kovalevsky and Olga Kalitenko Creativity is the space where the age does not matter; the space where adults become children as they perceive a new and unknown world the same way as children, and they do something they have never done before, whereas children work with such confidence as they have been done this before for millions of times, as true masters. Our garden is the area of Creativity, produced in real time by joint efforts of many masters: gardeners, artists, designers, educators, museum workers, and experts of the most diverse areas. During the festival, specially equipped grounds will host workshops, performances, concerts for adults and children, meetings with interesting people, and many other interesting events. «LUKOMORIE» Project

Partnership project of ANO Vsevmusey (Autonomous Noncommercial Cultural and Educational Company Vsevmusey) unites organizations with an experience in constant cooperation with children with special needs into one fairy-tail environment. The central element of a landscape composition will be a fairy- tale gold chain uniting art objects and landscape compositions in a story-line and turning those into one playground environment for children and grown-up… children. While walking along unknown paths, the smallest guests will be able to communicate with unseen creatures, build ‘little huts having neither windows, nor doors’, and follow a learned cat in its walks around the chain. Apart from expected characters from Lukomorie, there will be Doctor Aibolit (Powderpill) and his assistants under the tree. The doctor will not only keep a wary eye on health of animals and introduce young travelers to inhabitants of the garden but help visitors to stop being afraid of people in lab coats. After the Festival is over, the landscape composition will be transported to Cat Museum (214 Koltushskoe Shosse, Vsevolozhsk) where it will be a part of an everyday life of the museum. Within the Festival, the following projects will be organized on site: World Day of St. Petersburg Cats, master-classes on representing unseen creature with different art techniques, on sand art, on creating huts for garden inhabitants, there will also be lessons from Dr. Aibolit, interaction with characters from Lukomorie and nature lectures (For kids about animals). There will also be fascinating topical areas: Lego-go! Project “FUN AND PLEASURES. YOUR TIME HAS COME!”

(Lively Playgrounds in Urban Environment) Idea authors – Senya Verevkin, Ksenia Marger Project authors – Senya Verevkin, Mikhail Smirnov

“Business before pleasure”, at times it is very difficult to explain this idea to children. Let them get in contact with wild life, soil, plants, and the distinction between business and pleasure blurs. We suggest creating lively green grounds with a small garden and sandpit right in the urban environment. Planting flowers, greenery or vegetables, children work with pleasure, come to know the world around them, and communicate with each other. From garden beds placed in boxes they can go to the sandpit where they play with familiar, yet abnormal in size even for adults, objects – a bicycle and a rocking horse. Everyone gets into the common world called childhood. Such grounds will balance children and adults and contribute to sustainable development of cities and balanced co-existence of people and wild life in the city. In about one hour way from St Petersburg, on the bank of the Large Pond and in the midst of a picturesque park an ancient manor Maryino, an ancestral estate of counts Stroganovs and princes Golitsyn, has been located in Andriyanovo village for more than two centuries. In the present days the manor turned into the palace and park ensemble open for visitors.

Today both visiting guests of the manor and local residents may admire reviving beauties of the estate – the park is open for walks, the palace houses excursions, music saloons and balls a part of apartments is equipped for comfortable hotel rooms, and state rooms and the park host weddings, banquets, and other celebrations. Having visited the manor once during annual festivals and celebrations (Epiphany, Maslenitsa festival, Easter, Midsummer Night, and Festival of Roses in July are widely celebrated in the manor, as well as the birthday of the manor itself which takes place at the end of September) you will certainly come to Maryino once and again! Project “FLOWER OF HAPPINESS”

In 2016 during the Imperial Gardens of Russian Festival an unusual plant – Flower of Happiness came into blossom in the Mikhailovsky Garden. This plant was brought to the garden from a magic place in the District: Maryino Manor, where it was grown. Besides that the Flower of Happiness is a perfect dream, it also possesses a marvelous property of fulfilling wishes. Wishes must be pronounced aloud, standing in the center of the flower. Magic powers of the flower are able to fulfill the wishes of both single visitors and of the number of people who manage to get into the flower’s center. The magic properties of the flowers are increased by people in love, day dreamers, and children, as all these people live with their souls open to the world and are able to see miracles by their hearts! Good fairies are fluttering around the flower and hand out flyers telling how to get to the wonderful manor where such valuable Flower of Happiness grew. This marvelous plant has been grown by a tight-knit team of like- minded people working at Maryino Manor: G. G. Stepanova with her family, E.N. Timofeeva with assistants, and O. V. “STRAWBERRY PATH” Project

“Strawberries have ripened in the forest. Father took a mug, mother took a cup, Zhenya took a jug, and little Pavlik took a saucer. They went to the forest to pick up berries…” V. P. Kataev

A bright summer day, the sun is shining; the wind brings the smell of grass and flowers. A path to cherished strawberry meadows goes over the hills, over the green, through the birch wood, and, finally, here they are – strawberries! Our project was inspired by our impressions from expeditions to the forest for strawberries. The playground’s concept involves integration of an emotional image of the forest, travel and adventures into the urban environment. Unconventional and multi-functional set of gaming equipment made of ecofriendly materials provides creation of developmental scenarios of stay on the playground, possible change of games, including associative and imitation games, adventure plots. Coming to the playground, you find yourself in the forest fairytale. Here one can run over strawberry hills, go through the birch wood, and then take a rest in long grass. Or invent your own adventure. We offer the space of imagination and emotions for all age groups, the space you would like to return once and again! Upon Festival’s completion Children’s Playground “Strawberry Path” will be donated to School No. 13 of Primorsky District, St Petersburg. At the outset it was a small representative office performing representation and consultation functions. 2009 saw the foundation of a limited liability company called “Andreas Stihl Marketing” with its headquarters in Saint-Petersburg and a network of regional representatives throughout the country. The company is presently represented in Russia by nine sales companies located in the large cities of the country and having, in turn, a huge dealer network selling the products to the end users. A very important component of any STIHL tool is competent servicing, that’s why the STIHL tools are sold exclusively via a special dealer network. Only such a network is able to provide professional advice, servicing and a supply of official spare parts. “COLORFUL WORLD” Project

The theme of childhood is always interesting, totally different in nature organizations and companies are enthusiastic to develop it. STIHL didn`t stand back, and also joined to the creation of their stand, which would not leave indifferent any young person who has come with his family to the Mikhailovsky Garden for the Imperial Gardens of Russia Festival in 2016. On the garden`s lawn the guests are met with a bright, cheerful, joyful playground, inviting boys and girls and their parents to come to the stand and to remain there until the moment when it’s all entertainment will be tried, and all energy have been exhausted. The project was realized in a friendly and warm cooperation with the Russian Museum and the British designer Peter Fink. He was the creator of this truly memorable stand, which we have named the Colorful World.

The project was realized with the support of the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in St. Petersburg. MIDDLE-SIZED GARDENS

“GARDEN OF 5 SENSES» Project

The garden will be designed specifically for children, using the plants to induce singular sensorial experiences. State-of-the-art techniques will be used to set up vertical gardens inspired in the traditions of our region: vegetable gardens for feeding purposes, and ornamental Mediterranean gardening. Water will run between them, and hedges of aromatic plants in the arab- andalusian manner will complete the design. The goal is the stimulation of all five senses: Sight. Colours and shapes of bougainvilleas, geranium and other spring flowering species such as can be seen in our streets. Hearing. The ever turning sound of water flowing from fountains. Touch. The different textures can be grasped by children playfully blinded, thanks to the vertical display. Smell. Children will be taught to appreciate the smell of rosemary, lavender or other aromatic herbs. Taste. Children will be able to pick the vegetables directly from the garden-wall and try recipies with them. MIDDLE-SIZED GARDENS

Project “DESERT ISLAND”

Children know no limits in space or imagination. They are not boxed into rigid boundaries of the adult world view. Our project will help adults to remember their childhood, and children to play sea conquerors, Robinson Crusoe, or Sindbad the Sailor to their heart’s content. A little bit of imagination and … coming off the path and crossing the bridge, our visitors will find themselves on a desert island, imagine that they have suffered shipwreck and been casted on the island, but there is always an opportunity to throw a bottle with a message asking for help into the sea, and there is a chance that a brave captain prowling the oceans will lower the boat and save the one seeking help. And a moment later one may come to be in a miraculous garden somewhere in hot countries, in the oasis amidst the desert and just like travellers going with the caravan of exotic spices and goods listen to the murmur of the spring and stretch legs in the shade of southern citrus trees. All this is just our imagination, nothing more; nevertheless, the images are as bright as in our childhood. Go back to your childhood more often! MIDDLE-SIZED GARDENS MIDDLE-SIZED GARDENS

Project “OPEN THE WORLD YOURSELF”

Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world. Arthur Schopenhauer

Children are able to think and create something the same way as they see this world: straightforwardly, volumetrically, without any constraints or thinking what other people might say. Your first sight of the world is a sight of a clean sheet which can produce some pictures. In course of time the picture is becoming more distinct and bright, with sharp edges and clear lines and rules. At times you need a reason and time to remind yourself that the world provides you with boundless opportunities for creativity. Open the world yourself, and get to know yourself once again! The first life experience is reflection: that is how children perceive the world by imitating adults and senior ones. This world is colorful and diverse; the world is boundless; the world of games and transformations; the world behind the looking-glass; the world of extraordinary impressions. Teenagers: they are not children, although not adults yet. It is a difficult stage when a young person standing full length should see the opportunities opening. Attempts to find yourself can either lead to the world of discoveries and creativity or to the narrow-minded existence. What are you like at the moment? Through what prism do you look at the world around you and what do you see? Is the world bright and free as this garden which a child’s eyes can see in the mirror or just a small plot of a well-groomed lawn, which can be seen through a small window in the wall of rules and norms we often set for ourselves? We would like to show the world as it is and as it may be to adults and children, the ones who have grown up and are still growing! You can take a different look at this world, at yourself, at your children, and discover this world once again! This project is created to unite adults and children, nature and design, classic landscape art and modern installation. MIDDLE-SIZED GARDENS MIDDLE-SIZED GARDENS

Project “FATHERS AND SONS”

Project authors – Natalia Zazerskaya

Everyone knows that the garage is not only the place where a family car is kept. The garage is a workshop and a vegetable store, men’s club and even a shrink’s office. But one of the main sacred actions taking place in the garage is exposure of a young man to the adult world. “Sonny, give me that wrench,” said the father once opening the hood. And a boy, not believing his ears, took this necessary tool in his hands. This simple event reminds of an ancient coming-of-age ceremony which was aimed to bring the child into a difficult and dangerous adult life. Object “Fathers and Sons” is a women’s view to the men’s world, the history of father’s upbringing and moving into adulthood told by means of flowers, herbs and hardware. With thanks to fathers for sons! MIDDLE-SIZED GARDENS

In the rich verdure of a magnificent garden the visitors suddenly come across a flower fountain. The garden, allowing the fountain to disturb its tranquility, welcomes its appearance by a light sway of branches and palpitation of leaves. Flower ribbons go down the iron chutes, as water threads, either forming a sophisticated sculpture or coming to life in the odor of sunny buds and leaving the tail of reminiscences from the childhood. The same way as the seed gives birth to the flower, the fountain, as a spring coming from the ground, symbolizes birth, contemplation, and infinity.

“THE WORLD BEHIND THE LOOKING GLASS” Project

Developing the project concept, the authors gave priority to interactivity and entertainment of children’s theme in landscaping. The composition presents a rectangular court closed on three sides with a П-shaped path along the inside perimeter, which allows going round the court. The ground in the center of the composition is a variation on a chess board theme. However, some of the squares changed their places, whereas flowers and conifers can be found on other squares, as well as the figures of fairytale characters. Welcome to the World behind the Looking Glass! Project “THE WORLD OF CHILDHOOD”

Project authors: Boris Anushin, Lilia Eglit All of us come from our childhood, as the childhood is where our outlook is born. Everyone bears an ideal image of this world (the world of childhood) and we keep this image at the bottom of our hearts for our entire life. We, Lilia Eglit and Borsi Anushin, invite you to look at the world of childhood through very general, yet light, image of family, which is bright, life assuring and intrinsically valuable by itself. A child is closer to nature than anyone else: it is the whole universe of feelings, emotions, sensations and bright impressions which are becoming more heavy-footed and earthy with years. In our project we would like to present the image of childhood as the starting point of demerging from nature: the adolescent period inhering the intact purity and sincerity. Unbiased emotionality of the childhood with its uncovered sensory perception of the world is marked by translucent contours. The shade opposing the light symbolizes the earthy material life and is emphasized by color – the image of material beauty on Earth. Herewith, the floral carpet within the contours of shade is also symbolic, as even sorrows in childhood are bright and rainbow-like because they are brightened by joyful perception of the world and overall feeling of safety; thus, they are swift passing. Translucent structures and bright flowering plants express a subject matter of the composition in material: from inherent emotional sincerity and purity to earthy colorful harmony through the childhood. Project author – Larisa Abramova A child is like a ray of white light. The basis of the composition is a white color (a white verandah). The chamomile field (central zone) symbolizes innocence, purity, and openness. The same way a white ray of light falls into colors, the child develops different qualities when exposed to bright colors. In the garden spots of colors – zones – radiate outward from the center. These zones are decorated with plants and thematic posters of the relevant color characterizing its symbolism and impact on the human development. Each color bears its energy, knowledge, and feelings. Green zone – protection, family, support area Yellow – energy of knowledge Red – energy of physical development, endurance, and stamina Light blue – friendliness Dark blue – adventures Brown – working capacity Pink – romanticism Orange – creativity. The core of project “Mokhostrov” submitted to the competition dedicated to childhood is northern nature, which is so close for families with children attending the festival. This is the natural component of culture, which was suggested by Nikolai Rerikh. The symbols of this emblem, three round stones (artificial shells) will come in unexpected contrast to the round floating island covered with the thick carpet of mosses, ferns, bushes of blueberry, cowberry, bilberry, and heather. The island will become a favorite habitat for ducks; it will add life to the pond and bring joy to children and their children. Water plants, sedge, and cattail along the island outline, as well as the leaves of water lilies, which come into flower, floating on the pond surface, will remind about local flora, which has existed long before the park, and about natural environment, which still surrounds people. Project “YOUNG FLORISTS’ WORKSHOP”

Summer is amazing time! Outdoor activities are tempting! Especially for children! Small children are big fidgets. They cannot sit still even for a while. One of the first-priority task of adults is to direct the child’s aspiration for acting into a proper, more precisely, into a creative channel. A perfect way of intellectual and emotional development of small children is creative activity. And creative activity in the open air... in the garden is even better. “Young Florist’s Workshop” is a corner of the garden, where, staying outdoors, the child may create BEAUTY. Using different natural materials, children try creating their first floral works. Small gardens

Project “WHERE DOES HOBBIT LIVE?”

Based on The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien. Project autor – Gennady Kalashnikov

Originally hobbits lived in holes (they still feel most comfortably in them), but in the course of time their accommodation has become more diverse. In Bilbo’s time only the wealthiest and the poorest families kept up ancient traditions. The latter made holes with one window or without any, whereas prosperous hobbits were not satisfied with simple holes and created proper mansions (they were called smeals) with numerous passages and halls under the ground. But such accommodation needed some appropriate place, which was not easy to find. That is why on plains and in lowlands hobbits started building on the ground, and shortly thereafter in hilly areas, even in traditional areas of hobbit’s holes such as Hobbiton, Tuckborough and Michel Delving on the White Downs, wooden, stony, and brick houses appeared. More and more craftsmen – millers, blacksmiths, and cart wrights were moving in there. Soon, even wealthy holes acquired above-ground structures (sheds and working shops). Small gardens

NIKA LLC is a multi-purpose landscape and construction company specializing in general improvement and landscaping of both urban areas and private plots. We especially enjoy working at children’s facilities. Kindergartens and schools decorated by our specialists look especially comfortable. It seems that they are smothered in flowers and verdure from spring till late autumn as the plants are selected by their blooming period from April to October. Herewith, the choice of plants is enormous as the company has its own nursery garden. A living illustration of our unconventional approach to the theme “Children, School, Garden” is the area of School No. 584 for children with ICP at Rudneva street 8 and of School No. 104 in Kharchenko street. Our indoor and outdoor grounds for miniature golf are also tailor-made. Each ground has its concept and unconventional decoration. We occupy ourselves only with what we love. And what we love? We love our city and people living in it. Small gardens

Project author – Konov Vladimir

Grown man play golf, the youth prefer miniature golf, and who is MINI-GOLFIK for? Right you are. It is for our children! Try to offer your child something ordinary – and he will quickly get bored. The child wants something Unusual! And we have something to offer your child! It is – MINI-GOLFIK! An exciting, thrilling, and creative game! On a small ground of 3X4 m in size super-complex 3D modules of miniature golf are assembled as a puzzle. No every adult is able to get familiar with. By the way, it is noted that very often a child beats the parents, as the child plays without any inner limits! Let’s play like adults: a set of golf clubs, tracks, loops, traps, a judge’s table, and photo sessions… And the most important thing is that this great structure is easy to dismantle and move to your dacha! And you do not need much space, as it is MINI-GOLFIK! Small gardens

GARDENER’S NON-COMMERCIAL PARTNERSHIP (GNCP) “ZVEZDOCHKA” Gribakins str., St Petersburg Tel.: +7-921-952-09-16 E-mail: [email protected] Board Chairman – Konov Vladimir It historically happens that several gardener’s partnerships still exist in the territory of our city. Lands, being once marginal, were distributed among employees of industrial enterprises. Small land plots of 6 ares were cultivated by enthusiastic gardeners. The vegetable gardens were within easy reach: one could take a bus-trolleybus and in half an hour happily potter around the garden, a private small hand- made paradise. Later, the city overgrew its boundaries, new buildings poured over the city outskirts, some new districts developed, and these nice vegetable gardens remained in the midst of high-rise buildings: they are so touching with their wooden fences and small toy-like houses smothered in apple, cherry, and bird cherry trees. Our little gardener’s partnership (just 102 plots), sandwiched between powerful Zvezda plant, at which the first amateur gardeners worked, and noisy Ring Road, which never calms down, is a recreational zone for such industrial district as Obukhovo. In winter, our gardens sleep under the snow, with small streams of smoke idyllically rising above the roofs here and where, just like in the country. In spring, the gardens are full of blooming apple, cherry, plum, and bird cherry trees, and at night we enjoy songs of nightingales, trilling just like in Kursk (in Russian saying “Kursk nightingale” means an excellent singer).

COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION “PRIMULA” NATURE LOVERS’ CLUB

own of Lisiy Nos, St Petersburg Tel.: +7 (905) 285-11-33 E-mail: [email protected] www.primula.spb.ru

Community Organization “Primula” Nature Lovers’ Club, founded in 2010, brings together people interested in gardening, landscape design and the fate of their small motherland – the Village of Lisy Nos (Fox Nose). The members of our society are people who’ve already managed to accomplish the basics of life – building a home, raising children, and planting a garden. It is their altruistic desire to see gardens bursting beyond the confines of private estates, carpeting the streets and playgrounds, and flowing into the village’s main square, forming a vast public garden in whose creation the residents themselves have the opportunity to participate. This goal unites people of different age including young people. For six years in summer with participation of the Youth Labor Exchange we have arranged the Youth Ecological Squad and together with children we have been growing our future gardens. In 2010, starting with small-scale jobs – area improvement around the Palace of Culture in the settlement, every year we turn thickly grown, uncared plots into refined, interesting park and garden areas popular with children and adults. The settlement is extended with gardens. Thus, in 2012 we laid the LIABRARY GARDEN, and in 2015 the TURTLE GARDEN was set up. The whole settlement and its inhabitants are proud of these gardens, as we have put our labor and love into them. Small gardens

Project “THE KEY TO THE FORGOTTEN LAND”

Project authors and leader – Zabrovskaya Maria Architect – Parichka Natalia

The key to the forgotten land… Long ago it was lost forever. Thick brushwood covered the abandoned path, the gateway hidden under cobwebs and moss. To come back, to make your way over hill and dale, and to peep in there with half an eye. Is here anybody who has not dreamt of that? But how? And is it possible? As only those who are underage are allowed to enter this land. What if? May the situation be different? May the key to the land of your childhood be somewhere near and nobody has found it yet? You know, you just need to remember and you will be able to come back to that faraway fairyland. The project is based on the work of school children from the Lisy Nos Youth Ecological Squad, which they did one rainy summer day during classroom training. ART OBJECTS

Poster Exhibition “FLOWERS OF CHILDHOOD”

Project curator Graphic-Artist, “Graphic design” Department Curator – Galina Metelichenko

To plunge into the world of childhood once again… What could be better than this? Spontaneity, joyful and free creativity, and inspiring imagination – these are the emotions and feelings which are so essential for an artist in the artist’s adulthood. We refer to the source of childhood to feed our creativity, to move beyond our adult platitudes, and to open new creative sides of life. Students and alumni of International Design School (St Petersburg), who traditionally take part in the Festival, were highly enthusiastic to take up this amazing theme which is so close to everyone. Since it is a perfect space to kid around, escape the rules, and be entirely sincere and joyful as children, who are the flowers of our life! The posters we are going to present this time will display these particular qualities. We will try to take the unique experience of spontaneity and joyfulness from the Land of Childhood and transmit them by means of a modern graphic language of a poster. ART OBJECTS

Project “CHESS CITY”

Chess is played by both adults and children. Chess joins together art, science, and sport. It is difficult to find a better game for the brain than chess: confrontation and opposition of black and white, of the sky and the earth, of male and female – yin and yang. Chess develops tactics and strategy, observation and patience, combinative thinking. You cannot help but compare the game of chess with Chinese I Ching (The Book of Changes), one of the oldest fortune-telling systems, the collection of practical, philosophical and spiritual wisdom of ancient Chinese culture. The book comprises 64 symbols (hexagrams), as many as squares on a chessboard. The basis of I Ching is ever-changing Universe, its changes and development. Each hexagram consists of two trigrams composed of three broken or unbroken lines. The upper trigram symbolizes the past of a person, and the lower one tells the person’s future. In particular, “Creativity” trigram presents three unbroken (male) lines and symbolizes the Sky, whereas “Fulfillment” trigram consists of three broken (female) lines and symbolizes Earth. When yang reaches its limit, it turns into yin, and when yin reaches its limit, it turns into yang. Confrontation develops into its opposite, attaining equilibrium and harmony, something permanent and changeable, two creative sources, the point at which the distinction between black and white blurs. It is impossible to achieve perfection in chess; nevertheless, aiming for the Great Limit means the non-existence which gives birth to existence. Expression of this process by modern plastic means, as well as the appeal to these images, is the establishment of sources building the foundation of the future at the present moment. ART OBJECTS

Project “MOON FLOWERS”

The project was inspired by story “Forever and the Earth” by Ray Bradbury, in which the author tells about the genius and fragility of human life, about a journey through time undertaken to let a death- sick writer of science fiction live for a bit longer and write his best book. The story ends with a description of beautiful flowers: “…But these flowers appear each night. They seem to drop from the sky. They are the color of an autumn moon, their blossoms are immense and they burn and sparkle their cold, long petals in a blue and white fire.” The project presents several objets d’art: large fancy flowers placed in space between trees above the human height to create the impression that the flowers have dropped from the sky. The flowers are of expressly bright colors to stand in contrast with the setting and emphasize their non-earthy origin. ART OBJECTS

Project “THE GARDEN OF CHILDHOOD”

The image of childhood, as well as the theme of motherhood, is important in the creative work of Vera Viglina. Children depicted by the author are neither ingenuous babies nor little adults: they are some special creations living under their own laws in some special timeless environment. They play carelessly, running together about the summer meadow. Their games are like meditation, and children are absorbed in thoughts about themselves, garden, and the world around. In her sculptures, the author has managed to embody with an amazing expressiveness a lively longing of a child, unselfish desire to share joy, and unprotected openness to the world. By their presence children turn the environment around them into the sacred place of games and dreaming, into the garden of childhood to which each of us would like to come back. ART OBJECTS

Each of my projects is tailor-made and has its unconventional concept and flower decoration. My last projects: landscape arrangement around apartments in Primorskoye shosse 424 and beautification of the area around business center Preobrazhensky Dvor (Liteyny pr. 26). Project “THE CITY OF SUNNY BUNNIES”

Idea author – Nadezhda Oleynik Children are great visionaries and inventors. They create the world of their own using the simplest materials and common objects; they animate it and make up the whole stories about this world. In summer in the country, many children enthusiastically build huts, settlements, and even towns inhabited by animals, birds, characters of books and films. Project “The City of Sunny Bunnies” involves the natural landscape of the Mikhailovsky Garden and trees transformed by children into a clay town with houses inhabited by BUNNIES also made of clay. Clay is a natural material; clay items live long and can fit into any landscape perfectly. The composition will be not complete without plashes of sunlight (in Russian they are called “solnechnye zaychiki” (sunny bunnies)) reflected from numerous mirrors placed in the grass and fixed in the trees. Children are so fond of reflecting sunlight all around! The composition is made by students of Fontanka-32 Children Art Centre under the supervision of Nadezhda Oleynik. Children attending ceramics studios of the Children’s Activity Center of Primorsky District “Put” under the supervision of Elena Alekseeva and the Children’s Activity Center of Vasileostrovsky District “On the 9th Line” under the supervision of Ekaterina Tokareva took part in the project. Playground Project “ABVGDeika”

TV programme ABVGDeika is the most long-lasting television educational project in the and later in Russia. In the absence of positive patterns of children behavior in mass media, the role of such TV programme as ABVGDeika is overriding. For this very reason the St Petersburg Administration for Development of Horticulture and Vegetable Gardening suggests the project “ABVGDeika”. This project is fully congruent with the National Strategy of Actions in Interests of Children for 2012-2017 proposed by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, as this project successfully fulfills an important task of information socialization of children in today’s society. The project presents a classroom with flower composition forming the word “ABVGDeika” as the classroom’s walls. On the ground visitors can see large colorful boxes full of special game-based aids and toys, a bookstand with children’s books, a stand for pictures and can hear popular songs from favorite old cartoons playing in the background. Besides, during the Festival, the ground will host workshops in carving (the art of carving fruit and vegetables) and flowers planting and selection. On the opening day of the Festival the visitors will see a special presentation of ABVGDeika TV programme with the participation of actors and clowns of TV project, as well as awarding the winners of the children drawing contest “My Favorite Dacha” announced by the Administration. Chetyre Stikhii (The Four Elements) Creative Union is the association of professional artists of St Petersburg working in different styles and turning flat wooden objects into angels, horses, fish, cats, sheep or elephants decorated with ornaments. Academic painting methods, paintings in the old- master style, and vanguard motives with a grain of warm humor are used along with the depiction of flat forms which is typical for popular folk decoration. For the period from 2009 to 2016 9 thematic collections were created by the union’s artists. Items made with feeling, with good taste may be a good ornamentation for any exterior, landscape of a club, private house, dacha, weekend school, any place where warm and cheerful atmosphere is needed. Painted horses are not only amusement for children but also admiration for adults.
